T0 all 'Ht/mm it may concern Be it known that I, GERALD W. HART, a citizen of tlicllnited States, residing at fest Hartford. county of Hartford, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Switches, of which the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description.
Myinvention relates to improvements in switches, and has for its object to provide a Simple and eliicient switch for controlling electric circuits, and is particularly adapted for controlling the circuits, such as those of motors, for starting automobiles.
It urther has for `its object to produce a switch which is durable in construction and easy to manufacture.
The following is a description of an embodiment of my invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in whichlfigure 1 shows a lvertical central section of the switch with the parts in open position. F ig. f2 shows a similar view with the parts in closed position. Fig. 3 showsy an end elevation of the casing with the .operating rod in sectiony on the line 3--3 Fig. 1. Fig. Il is a plan view of the switch with the cover removed, z'. c., on the line 1*4 Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a perspective detail of one ol the elements.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 is a switch casing having a cover 2 secured thereto by screws. The inner wall of the switch casing carries terminals 3 4, one of which at least is insulated from the casing. Where one terminal of the battery is not grounded, both of the terminals 3--1 should be insulated as shown at 5. The inner wall of the casing also carriesl a projection 6 having a boro 7 in which slides a plunger S carrying on its outer end a laminated switch arm 9 secured thereto in a proper manner. Where one terminal oli the source of current is not grounded, this lumi-- nated switch arm should be insulated'irom its support by insulation 10. Between the inner end' of the case and switch arm is a spring 11, by reason oi which the switch arm tends to move to'open position. The lower wall of the casing carries a headed stud 12, upon which the` notched end 13 oi' a lever 11, loosely lits the central portion of which lever bears upon the outer end of the plum er 8. This lever is bifuroated and has an ment it is passed through a sleeve 19 elongated opening 15 and two bifurcations o r arms 16 and downwardly inclined portions 17, which provide a two part cam sur face. 18 is a sliding rod mounted in bean ings 1n the walls of the casing 1 and pro vided with an operating connection or handle. This rod lies between. the bifurcations and carrles a pin 19 which projects on each side thereof so as to make engagement with the arms or bifurcations 16 of the lever le. and :also carries a stop 20 shown in the forni of a screw engaging a screw-threaded hole in the rod 18. The inner end of this stop lies within the elongated openingle 15 and bears.against the abutments formed bv the ends thereof, constituting a stop for the rod 18 and limiting its movement in each direction. The pin 19 engages the 'cam surface 17 and when the sliding rod 18 is moved upward, causes the lever 14 to move inward about its fulcrum 12 so as to move the switch arm 9 into engagement with the terminals 3 and 4, thus closing the switch. When the switch is in closed position, as shown in Fig. 2, and the rod is moved downward, the switch arm is released and is then moved to open position bythe action of the spring 11. lVhere a snap action is desired the pin 19 is movably mounted in a slot 18 in the rod 18. ln order to keep the pin 19 in alineu which surrounds and slides freely on the rod 18. The arms 1G embrace the rod 18 and sleeve 19 so that both ends of the pin 19 act upon the lever 14.
Plates 9--92 surround the plunger and are on opposite sides of the switch arm 9. The plate 92 is provided with upwardly projecting flanges 93 which engagethe two sides of the lever 14CA and keep the switch armV in alinement with the contacts 3 and l.
In operating the switch the rod 18 is moved in one direction 'or the other, whereupon the switch opens or closes. @n account o the lost motion between the pin 19 and the rod 18, the switch Aopens with a snap action.
As will be evident to those skilled in the art, my invention admits of modifications without departing from the spirit thereof or the scope of the appended claims.
1. in a, switch the combination of a base, terminals supported thereby, for engaging and disengaging said terminals a switch arm` and normally' tending to move away therefrom, a bifurcated cam lever for actuating said switch arm, the fulcrum'of which lever is fixed relatively to said base, a rod sliding in fixed bearings and embraced by the bifurcations of said lever, and a pin carried by said rod and having lost motion relatively thereto, said pin engaging the bifurcations of said cam lever.

In va switch the combination of a casing, terminals supported by one Wall thereof, a movable switch arm for engaging and disengaging said terminals arid tending to moveaway therefrom, an elongated cam member having one end supported by said casing for moving said switch arm, and a sliding rod carried by said casing and provided with means for engaging said cam member to move said member and said switch arm toward said terminals.
4. In a switch the colnbination of a casing, terminals supported by one wall there-l of, a movable switch arm tending to move away from said terminals, a cam vlever engaging said switch arm and having one end ulcrnmed on said casing and a sliding actuating member provided with means engaging said lever to move said lever and said switch arm toward said terminals.
