SOLE BOUGH-ROUNDING AND CHANNELING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LAWRENCE E. JOHN- soN, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of-Winthrop, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Tmprovinents in Sole Rough-Rounding my earlier patent was that the work was inverted during the operation of the machine, and the operator found difficulty in cutting the sole satisfactorily.
One of the objects of the present invention is to produce a machine in which the cutting may be done with the shoe right side up so that the operator will find it easier te cut the sole the required distance from the upper.
Another object of the invention is to provide a machine of this character with a plurality of gages and clamping devices easily adjustable whereby the work may be held in any desired position during the cutting of the sole.
The invention further consists of certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be fully understood by reference to the description of the drawings and to the claims hereinafter iven.

Fig. 3 represents a plan of the same. Fig. 4; represents an enlarged sectional detail showing the relation. of cutting devices to the work during the operation of the machine, Fig. 5 represents a perspective view of the work support and the channeling knife carried thereby, and Fig. 6 represents a horizontal section of a portion of the machine, showing the slide in which the knife plate is mounted and the means for operating said slide.

In the drawings, lu is the base of a frame 11 having bearings 12 in whichis revolubly mounted a shaft 13 adapted to be driven by a pulley 1 1. The shaft 13 has secured thereto the cam disks 15 and 16 which revolve therewith. The cam disk 15 is provided with a peripheral cam projection 17 adapted to coact with a roll 18 in the lower end of the lever 19 and move said lever about its pivot 20 thereby moving the upper end 21 of said lever toward the frame 11. This upper end 21. of the lever 19 has a curved bearing surface contacting with the stud 22 movable endwise in the eccentric sleeve 23 mounted in a bearing in the frame 11. A lever 21 is secured to the opposite end of said stud 22 by means of a'nut 25 threaded to the reduced end of said stud. The rear end of said lever 24:.has adjustably secured thereto a hook 26 between which and an eye 27 on the frame 11 is interposed a spring 28. The tension, of the spring 28 may be adjusted by the regulating nut 29.
The eccentric sleeve 23 has clamped thereto an arm 30 provided with a handle 31 and having a projection 32 normally held against a. stop member 33 extending laterally from the side face of the frame 11. lVhen the eccentric sleeve 23 is moved about the axis of its bearing in the frame 11 by means of the handle 31 the friction thereon is sufiicient to retain it in such adjusted position.
The spring 28 normally retains the forward end of said lever 24 against the stop projection 32 which limits the upward movement of said forward end. The stud 22 is provided with a head between which and the frame 11 isa spring 33 a which retains the roll 18 in contact with the periphery of the cam disk 15.
The forward end of the lever 24 has secured thereto a block 35 having a threaded shank 36 extending through an opening in said forward end of the lever 24:, the end of said shank having threaded thereto a nut 37. The shank 36 has alaterally extending pin 38 positioned in a slot 39 in the inner face of said lever 24,thereby limiting the moigement of the block 35 about the axis of its supporting shank 36 during the operation of the machine. Another block is secured to the block, 35 by. means of the bolt 41 and between these two blocks 3540 is clamped the channeling knife 42 having its upper end 43 bent toward the front of the machine. I
The blocks 3540 form the work support and carry the channeling knife 42, and all these members conforni'to the lateral movement of the lever 24. 'Coacting with the work support 3540 is a presser foot 44 secured to a stud on an eccentric 45 positioned in a bearing 46 at the top of the frame 11. The eccentric 45 is provided with an operating handle 47 by which the eccentric may be moved about its axis, a spring 48 being provided to create sufiicient friction to retain said eccentric in its adjusted position.
The rear end of the presser foot lever 44 is curved to form a cam surface as at 49 with which coacts a projection 50 on a lever 51 pivoted at 52 to the frame 11. This lever 51 is also provided with a lifting toe 53 normally against a stop member 54 but adapted to be moved against the rear end of the lever 24 to depress the work support against the tension of the spring 28.
The rear end of the lever 44 is provided with a vertical slot 55 in which is positioned a pin 56 secured in a lug 57 formed on the frame 11 and surrounded by a spring 58 which forces the operating end of the presser foot lever 44 into contact with the work.
The front of the frame 11 is provided with a grooved guide block 59 in the groove of which a plate 60 is adapted to reciprocate, said plate having secured to its upper end a chisel knife 61. a
The lowerend of the plate 60 is pivotally connected to one end of a link 62, the opposite end of which has clamped thereto an eccentric sleeve 63 mounted upon a stud 64 eccentrically positioned in the cam disk 16. Above the knife 61 is an operating table 65 with which said knife coacts, the front edge of which serves as a gage, the. welt of the shoe being held against this edge during the operation of the machine.
By unclamping the sleeve 63 and turning it in its bearing in thelink 62, the knife 61 may be adjusted so that it will properly coact -with the table 65 when shortened by being repeatedly sharpened. The block 59 is secured by means of the studs 66 to the.
slide 67 bearing in the frame 11. One end of the slide 67 is pivotally connected to, the upper end of the lever 68 pivoted at 69 and having at its lower end a roll 70 in the camv path 71 .in the back of the can; disk 16. The rotation of the cam disk 16 causes the cam 71 to act, upon the roll 70 and impart a lateral movement to the knife 61 by means of he slide 67 and the thereto.

When the machine is in operation the end of the 'presser foot '44 is adjusted for the proper width of welt and the Well; of the shoe is pressed against thisedge of the table 65 as shown in Fig. 4, the knife 61 in its upward movement coacting with the edge of the table 65. It is obvious that the distance between the end of the presser foot 24 and the knife 61 may be ad usted by changing the position of the eccentric 45 by means of the handle 47.
When the machine is in motion, the knife 61 is forced through the outsole, the work support 3540 with the channeling knife 43 moves to the right of Fig. 1, cutting a portion ofthe channel and then the work support and the knife'61 move toward the left, feeding the material. The knife 61 then descends from thesole, moves to the ,right and then again ascends into the material. The operation is continued in this manner, the operator retaining the; shoe in engagement with the end of the pressergfoot and turning it at the toes to properly pre sent the work to the cutting members. During the operation the work support 35-40 is movable slightly about the axis of the shank 36.
The feeding of the material is accomplished by the knife 61 when it has penetrated about one-half the thickness of the material at which time the lateral movement ofthe knife occurs carrying the sole and shoe with it to its new position. The length of feed is slightly less than the width of the chisel knife 61 so that by a continuation of movements a continuous cut is made through the sole, the edge of which, after the out has been made, conforming to the edge of the welt. This makes a very effective device for rough rounding the sole of the shoel and at the same time cutting a channel in the under face thereof. y

In a machine ofthe class described, the combination of a frame; a pivoted lever carrying a work support; a pivoted presser foot coacting therewith; a cylindrical stud mounted in theframe to the end of which means for moving said stud about its axis; any operating table; a reciprocating chisel knife coaoting therewith; and means for simultaneously moving said work support and presser foot about their pivots in opposite directions.

In a machine of the class described, the combination of a frame; a pivoted lever carrying a work support; a pivoted presser foot coacting with said work support; a eylindrical stud mounted in the frame to the end of which said presser foot is eccentrically pivoted; means for moving said stud about its axis; means for creating a friction on said stud to retain it in adjusted position; an operating table; a reciprocating chisel knife coacting therewith; and means for simultaneously moving said work support and presser foot about their pivots in opposite directions.

In a machine of the class described, the combination of a frame; an operating table thereon; a reciprocating chisel knife coacting therewith; a work support movable transversely of said chisel knife; a presser foot coacting with said support; and eans for adjusting the position of said s pport and presser foot toward and from the front face of said knife.

In a machine of the class described, the combination of a frame; an operating table thereon; a reciprocating chisel knife coacting therewith; a work support movable transverselv of said chisel knife; a channeling knife secured to said support and movable therewith; a presser foot 00- acting with said support; and means for adjusting the position of said support and presser foot toward and from the front face of said knife.

In a machine of the class described, the combination of a frame; an operating table thereon; a reciprocating chisel knife coactina therewith; a work support movable transversely of said chisel knife; a presser foot coacting with said support; means for adjusting the position of said support and presser foot toward and from the front face of said knife; and meansfor moving said work support transversely of said chisel knife while the latter is in the Work.
