To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VVILLIAM Al Gnrcnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Adjustable Side Bearings, of which the following is a full,
clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in adjustable side bearings.
An object of the invention is to provide an adjustable bearing plate of a side bearing for railway cars of simple construction and readily adjustable to any desired height.
The invention furthermore consists in the improvements in the parts and devices and in the novel combination of the parts and devices, as herein shown, described or claimed.
In the drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is an end elevation of a body bolster and a truck bolster showing mv improvements in connection therewith. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1 upon an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2 and Fig. 41 is a broken detail view illustrating another embodiment of my invention.
In said drawings, and referring to Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, 10 denotes the body bolster and 11 a truck bolster, which may be of any usual or well known design and having provided therebetween a side :bearing on each side of the king pin. As showmeach side bearing comprises a lower member A and an upper'member B. The member A consists of a base bracket 12 having a cradle 13 rock ably-mounted therein, in which cradle is rotatably mounted an antifriction roller 14, the axis of the roller being at right angles to the pivotal aXis of the rocking cradle. The member B, which I have shown as attached to the under side of the body bolster, comprises a bearing block 15 having a lower fiat bearing face 16 and upper, inclined faces 1717. Each of the faces 17 is provided with an undercut groove 18, in which is adapted to slide back and forth a correspondingly shaped tongue 19 formedon a lower inclined side of an adjusting block 20, there being two of said blocks 20,

as clearly appears from Fig. 2. Each of the adjusting blocks 20'is supported by a screw 21-21, one of which is threaded right hand and the other left hand and, as shown in Fig. 2, are conveniently formed in a single member. The screws 21 are swiveled in the side walls 2222 of the body bolster and means are provided for rotating said screws in the form of a disk 23 securely attached thereto, said disk 23 extending up through an opening 24 in the top wall of the body bolster whereby the same may be rotated by means of a tool inserted in any one of the plurality of radially arranged holes 25 around the circumference thereof. 23 in any of its adjusted pos1tions, l provide a plurality of transversely'extending holes 26 so located that they rise above the top wall of the body bolster and through which maybe inserted a cotter 27. The bearing block 15 and the adjusting blocks 20 are guided in their up and down movements by means of parallelly arranged walls 28, preferably cast integrally with the body bolster, see Fig. 3.
From the preceding description it will be seen that by rotating the disk 23 in the desired direction, the bearing block 15 may be raised or lowered to the desired height relative to the surface of the friction roller 14 and thus compensate for any variations in distance between the bolsters or wear on the parts.
In the structure shown in Fig. *1 the adjusting blocks 120 are each provided on their end face with a: recess 30 and groove 31 into which is adapted to take and swivel the head end 32 of the latter being threaded in the side wall 22 of the body bolster and provided with any adjusted position. Fig. 4 shows only one of the adjusting screws and adjusting block but, as will be understood, the opposite end is similar in arrangement and the bearing block 115 can be adjusted by turning the adjusting screws 3333.
I claim 1. In an adjustable side bearing for railhearing block,
tel-fitting tongues and grooves whereby the adjusting blocks support the bearing block, and means for moving said adjusting blocks inwardly and outwardly to thereby .raise the bearing block.
2. In an adjustable side bearing for railway cars, the combination with a bearing block having a lower flat bearing face an upper, oppositely inclined faces, of adjusting blocks having lower inclined faces c0- operating with the inclined faces of the bearing block, the inclined faces having interfitting tongues and grooves whereby the adjusting blocks support the bearing block, and means for moving said adjusting blocks inwardly and outwardly to thereby raise the bearing block, said means including an adthe inclined faces having in WILLIAM A.
