Be it known that we, ALoNzo Born, ER
NEST BOYD, and LOUIS FALLERT, citizens of the United States, residing at Arapahoe, in the county of F urnas, State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring Hame-Tug Connections; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to harness devices, particularly to hame fasteners, and has for its object the provision of simple and novel means whereby a tug may be resiliently connected with a hame so that the shock of quick starting will be avoided and whereby the pulling strain upon the horse is cushioned.
An important object is the provision of a device of this character so constructed that the tug will act as a wear plate and prevent contact of the spring connection against the side of or shoulder of the horse.
Another object is the provision of a device of this character so constructed that the tug is pivotally connected with the spring cushioning means so that greater play and freedom are provided for preventing strain upon the horse.
A further object is the. provision of a device of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in construction, efiicient and durable in use, and a general improvement of the art.
Other objects and advantages will be come apparent during the course of the following detailed description accompanied by the drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of our device, adapted for connection with a hame, Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof, Fig. 3 is an elevation of the opposite side thereof, and, Fig. 4: is a horizontal sectional view.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral 5 designates a rectangular frame, formed integrally, as by casting or constructed of a strip of strap iron bent to shape. Secured to or formed on the sides of the frame 5, are ears 6 apertured, as shown, for the passage of a bolt 7 passing through the bight, a bent plate 8, riveted upon the forward end of a tug 9 and secured in place by a cotter pin 10.
In order that resilient connection may be cushioning the shock or made between the tug and the hame, not shown, we provide a rod 11 passing through an opening in the forward end of the frame 5 and extending longitudinally within the frame. At its extreme forward end, the rod 11 is formed into an eye or loop 12 within which is disposed a U-shaped member 13 having apertured arms through which extends a bolt let provided with a clamping nut 15, whereby it may be secured upon the hame. The other end of the rod 11 is provided with a head 15, rectangular in shape and slidable upon inwardly extending flanges 16 formed on the sides of the frame 5. A coil spring 17 surrounds the rod 11 within the frame and abuts against the forward end of the frame and the head 15. The frame 5 is strengthened and the rod 11 and the spring 17 are prevented from displacement by means of U-shaped arms 18 riveted or otherwise secured upon the sides of the frame 5.
Vhen our novel device is in position upon a horse with the U-shaped member 13 secured upon the hame by the nut, the tug 9 will be disposed so as to contact with the shoulder or side of the horse and will consequently prevent chafling. When the horse starts forward suddenly he will pull forwardly upon the rod 11, consequently compressing the spring 17 between the forward end of the frame 5 and the head 17, thereby jar and rendering the pulling considerably easier in case obstructions or ruts are encountered by the vehicle being drawn.
From the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the drawing, it will be apparent that we have thus provided a novel and simple hame tug connection whereby resilience is obtained so that the pulling strain upon a horse drawing a vehicle, is lessened owing to the cushioning effect obtained.
It will be readily understood that the right is reserved to make various changes in the form, construction, and arrangement of parts, without departing from the spirit of the invention or limiting the scope of the subjoined claim.
