I

The present invention relatestof'improvements in safety devices for retaining the pockets closed, particularly the sidepockets of trousers, while'not necessarily restricted to this use.

An important object of the invention to provide a device of the above mentioned character, so constructed that when the same is holding the pocket closed, the parts thereof will fold up flat providing a structure conforming to the curvature of the hip, thus not perceptibly impairing the appearance of the trousers or inconveniencing the wearer.

A further object of the invention is to provide means for operating the device to partly or wholly open the pocket, such means being adapted to be operated by one hand from the exterior ofthe pocket.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned character, which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and highly convenient in use.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.

In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same, Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view through the side pocket of a trouser showing our device, in elevation, applied thereto, Fig. 2 is an edge elevation of the device removed and open, Fig. 3 is a similar View with the same closed, Fig. at is a side elevation of the device, and, Fig. 5 is an elevation of the opposite side thereof.

In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of our invention, the numeral 10 designates an outer longitudinally curved leaf spring, preferably formed of spring tempered steel. This spring is preferably arranged upon the inner side of portion 11 of the pocket, preferably between the folded material of the same. The end sections 13" are hinged to the ends of thecurved spring 10, as shown at. 16. The sections 13' and'leiare re'feratly formed of spring tempered steel. The control member 12 is arranged inwardly of the inner side 13 of the pocket, and is preferably covered by a lining 14. By being formed in three or more sections, when the control member 12 is moved to the closed posltion, such control member will lie flat upon the spring 10 and the entire device will conform substantially in curvature to the hip, thus taking up the minimum space and not perceptibly impairing the appearance of the trousers or inconveniencing the wearer.

The principal difiiculty heretofore encountered in the use of devices of this character has been in operating them to open the pocket. Such devices ordinarily require the employment of the two hands for their operation, and then it is often diflicult. To overcome this disadvantage, we secure one end 17 of a supplemental spring 18, to the exterior surface of the curved spring 10, the opposite end of the spring 18 slidably engaging the spring 10. Attached to the spring 18 between the ends thereof is an inwardly extending pin 19, passing through an aperture 19 within the spring 10, and adapted to engage with the section 14 adjacent the upper hinge 15, when spring 18 is moved inwardlyby pressure upon the exterior thereof. When this spring is moved inwardly, pin 19 moves the upper end of section 141 inwardly, whereby the lower end of upper section 13 is swung inwardly past dead center, the same automatically springing to the open position while the lower end of the section 14 and the lower section 13 re- The opening operation is then completed by inserting a hand inrthe partly open pocket.
