GALLEY MECHANISM FOR TYPE-COMPOSING MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent, Patented Augplfl 1915,
Application filed March, 12, 1914. Serial N 0. 824,234.
To all. whom it may concern Be it known that we, MAURITZ C. INDAHI and AMosL. KNIG T, citizens oftheUnited States, residingnat Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Galley Mechanisms for Type-Composing Machines; and we do hereby declarethe following to be a full,
clear, and eXact description'of the same, ref
kinds of what are known as mushroomtype',
6., type whose, head extendsbeyond and overhangs the body in a point or columnwise direction above the line, owing to the fact thatwhen the line transferrer by which the assembled line is shifted into the galley is adjusted to advance the line a suflicient distance to carry the overhangbeyond thegalley, blade so as to permit the latter to return to, positionat one side of the line assembling channel, the same motion when directed against the supporting quads of the following line would carry, the latter and deposit it to such a distance beyond the galley blade asto deprive it of the support necessary to prevent" squabbling when the linetransferrer is retracted and the gal-' ley blade returned tonornial position preliminary to the assemblingoit' the, next line. In'other words, the movement of the line necessary to carry mushroom type free of the galley bladedeprivesf the latter of its supporting function when applied to type of the same point size withoutthe overhang. The principal object of the present invention isto. correct this defect and this isac:
complished by the additi'onof an auxiliary, v
p r ing b ad adapte ito e pr i c s in'rear of the galleylblade and engagethe bodies of the typebelowgjthe overhang.
further object is to provide means for djusti g b th't ga leylbla e andt e ne transferrer, to adapt the machine for both standard and larger sizes, and to deal with either mushroom or ordinary type, the. purpose, inthis respect, being to increase the capacity of the machine. r r
In the accompanying drawings illustrating a preferred form of embodimentiof the invention, Figure l is a top plan view of a galley mechanism with the improvements applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a rear perspective ofthe galley blade with the auxiliary supporting blade; Fig. 3is a sectionalview showing the galley blade e le'vated and the line transferrer advancedto deposit a't linefoit mushroom type; in the galley; Figf iis a; sectional view showing the line transferrer in retracted position and the-galley blade depressed to form the line assembling channel with the auxiliary blade projected to support the mushroom type; 7 Fig.6 isia perspective view on. anenlarged Iscale'of'the galley blade with auxiliary blade removed therefrom; Fig. 6 is a rear. perspective of the auxiliary blade detached. Fig. 7 is' a" perspective of the removable interponent for theaun iliary blade; 8 is atop plan view showing the galley blade adjusting de} vices in different positions of adjustment; Fig, 9 is a details'ectional, view of 'th e ad justing interponent for the line transferrer F ig. 10 is a top plan view of a portion of'the line'transferrer actuating, lever showing the means for sustainingthe interponentin" ad justed position; Fig. 11 is a perspective View of the line transferrer interponent'."
The same numerals designate like parts in theseveral views. i i I Forpurposes of'illustration the invention is shown inl'connection with a galley mecha n sm constructed in accordance with applij cation Serial N0. 824,179 filed March '12, 1914, but is equally applicable to the correspe din me h f P e No- 745 dated May 21,1901. "It will suffice for pres? ent purposes to designate some of the prin-J cipal i performing members of "said prior structures, such asthe line assembling channel 1' extending between thefhorizontally movable line transferrer 2 and the vertically m v ble a ey blade hjelat' r. rma y closing the entrance to the galley 4 and car-I ried by a vertically movable post carrier 6 and'opposedtype support? mov ablelongitudinally ot'ithe linechannel and v L tratedrat 11,.in Figs. 3 and 4 so that when between which the composed line is moved 7 from its place of assembly into register with the galley entrance; and the actuating mechanism for the performing members including cam head 8, lever 9 and compression coupling lOthrough whichmotion is transmitted to the line transferrer. The starting of the galley mechanism may be effected either through the signal controlled mechanismof Patent No. 67 4,37 5 or the line actuated trip mechanism of application Serial No. 824,179 the latter being indicated in the drawings. As a rule the overhang or extension of the head of these mushroom type is in a direction above the line, as illusdelivered to the'type assembling channel 1, the, latter set to the width of the body, the head projects over the line transferrer. Moreover, in order to afford adequate support for the extended head, a quad 12 must be provided in thenext succeeding line oppositeand in positionto be entered beneath the overhanging portion of the head. The galley: blade 3 operates as 'a support for the -V last line in the column to prevent displacement or squabbling durlng the return movement of the line transferrer vand preliminary to the entrance of theneXt succeeding line, and it is particularly desirable topreserve ,this function when dealing with mush- V room type, that they may be upheld to re:
ceive the. supporting quads of the next succeeding line. Owing to the extensions of the heads of the type, it is obvious the throw of the line transferrer must be correspondiliarysupporting member or-surface adapt a andYthe operating mechanism of ;tl1e.lin6.
inglyincreased oradjusted, to the end that the; extension may pass beyondlthe path of the galley bladeas in Fig. 3, so that the descent of thelatter, after the line has been I deposited'in the galley, shall not be'interrupted or the type. broken Butfthis creased-throw oftheline transferrer is likewise'operative upon the following supporting quads 12 and'resultsin carrying the line containing said quads so far beyond the galley blade as to practically destroy or an -V nul: itssupporting function, thus leaving the: type of the last line without qany support on one side and in condition to be easily displaced; To overcome thesefldiflicul ties'and at the same timepreserve the funcf tions of the mechanism as a whole for dealing with ordinary type, the movable galley blade isprovided'or equipped with an auX ed to engage thelbodies of the type below the, .extensionand capable of withdrawal,
when; the galley blade is elevated, to permit theentranceof anew liner'into the galley;
transferrer is equipped with means for yaits position relativelyxto the actuating 'lldevices. or cam with" aview'toi. effecting an." extension of the stroke of the line trans said overhang.
ferrer without altering its position of rest or changing its actuating cam. With these ends in view the following changes and additions have, been made in or to the machine as illustrated in the application and patent hereinb'efore referred to. A some what thicker galley blade is employed and its rear face is recessed as indicated in Fig.
5 to receive the auxiliary line supporting section in the form of a supplemental blade 13 pivotally supported at or near its upper edge upon the main section or galley blade proper. V
As the point dimensions of 'mushroom typeois sometimes greater than that for which commercial machines are adapted and applied to the line transferrer for opening the line channel, means are supplied for effecting lateral "adjustment of the galley as a sorts caster.
WVhen jcomposing ordinary type supplemental blade 18' retains its position flush with or slightly within the rear face of the galley blade whic'hlatter operates as heretor fore; but when mushr'oom type are to be beyond the capacity ofthe adjusting devices blade, to which end the pin 5? on the post i operated upon an interponent 16 is inserted between the frame and an arm 17" on supplemental blade l inposition to engage and tiltthe latter on its supporting pivots and cause its lower edge to be protrudedbeneath the overhangof the type heads into contact with the body portion, Fig; 3. The support thus provided continues while the galley 'blade is lowered during the assembling of V the-next line-,and'when the -galley, blade rises to admit the next line the overhung portions of the heads are supported during therise of-the galley blade while blade 13 recedes within its containing recess to pass Whenthe line of supporting qua.ds 12' is: V
forced into the galley it is carried to the same distanceas the mushroom typeby virtue of the enga', e m ent of the lineftrajns-- ferrermwith the body portion of said type,
withfthe result that upon the return of the blade the last; line will, stand, at --a distance from the'rear face of the'latter equal to on line'transferrenand; descent or the galley exceeding the projection 'ofwthe overhang: This distance, is bridged, however, by sup plementaliibl'adem 13:: which is again projected into: supporting position by contact witlrinter-ponent 16. Theinterponent is preferably inthe form of a removable block provided within sustaining pins 18 adapted to enter holes in the frame andis properly proportioned tor effect the desired degree of protruslon.
The setting of the line transferrer for dimensioning the line channel is effected as usual through adjustment of theback stop 19 of cam lever 9; but this does not vary the maximum forward positionof the line 4. In a galley mechanism provided with transferrer as measured by the'cam.
To vary the forward position and at the same time preserve the timing, the bearing 20 against which the cam acts, instead of being made integral with lever 9, as heretofore, is carried by a supplemental lever 21 pivotally connected to lever 9 atone end, with its opposite or free end in position to engage any one of a series of stepped bearings 22 on an interponent 23, mounted on lever 9. Interponent 23 is attached to lever 9 in a manner to permit adjustment to present either of the steps 22 opposite lever 21,
a convenient arrangement for the purpose being shown, the same including a bolt or pin 24 carried by the interponent and riding in a slot 25 in lever 9. Bolt 25 is pro vided with a sleeve 26- whose inner or en gaging end is tapered or rounded to fit in either of a series of seats 27, each of the latter corresponding to one of the steps 22, and means, such as a spring 27, is applied to hold the sleeve in adjusted position.
As thus constructed interponent 23 furnishes a ready means for varying theposition of the line transferrer in its relation to the actuating cam without disturbing its 7 relation to the back stop 19, so that the extent of motion of the line transferrer can be varied without disturbing its relation to the line channel when the galley mechanism is.
at rest to receive the type for a new line.
It should be noted that the bearing20 for lever 9 does not ride in contact with the entire periphery of the cam, but is merely engaged by a protuberant portion thereof,
hence the length of the stroke of the line transferrer can be varied by varying the extent of contactQ Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
1. In a galley mechanism such as described and in combination with the movable galley blade thereof, a supplemental type supporting blade carried by and adapted to be projected rearwardly ofisaid galley blade. 1 p
