Description

P HAUSER.
CIGAR BOX OPENER. APPLICATION man MAR. 29, 1911.
Patented Aug. 3, 1915.
COLUMBIA PLANOGRAIH CO.,WMH|NGTDN, D. c.
Be "tfknown, that Iflniiiirfllausnii, a
citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New 1 York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cigar-Box Openers, of i which the following is a specification;
My invention relates to box openers and particularly to that class or box openers wherein the same is; inserted during thev op: eration of packing and 1S retalned m. posl tion until opening of the box is desired.
It is my object to provide a box opener of this type which will be a small, simplyconstructed device adapted for insertion be tween the upper edge of the front wall of the box and that portion of the hinged cover impinging thereupon when in, closed position, said device so positioned prior to the closing of the box and provided with an extension or projection disposed beyond the side of the box adapted to be grasped by the hand, turning which is designed to. effect the expeditious and ready opening of the box.
Another object of my invention is to provide abox opener so constructedas to be impossible to dislodge or displace it once the boxhas been scaled except in the capacity for which designated.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a box opener which will be simple, light, durable and economical of manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view my invention consists in such details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and specificallypointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, in which like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which I Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device applied to a box disclosed in section and with the lid raised. Fig. 2 is across sectional view of the device applied to a box, the lid being closed. Fig. 3 is a similar view disclosing a modification of the device, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the modified form of the device.
Referring to the drawings the opener comprises preferably a single sheet'of metal stamped and bent to provide a lifting plate 10 v for engagement upon the upper edge mum-meets;jor aew real gn. Y.

ithe ffront wall 11 box. l ,to receive the under surface ofthe cover 12 of the box impinging thereupon when closed. I
and at right angles to the: innerrand outer edges of the lifting platelO. ,1 The, outer flange 14 which extends up fromthelifting plate 10 and is flared at its upper end, rests againstthe outer edge vofgthe (over 12 and carries an outstanding finger piece or key 15. The finger piece 15 is also in the nature of a flange extending the full length of the upper flared edge of the flange 14 and having any suitable shape to adapt it for grasping by the fore-finger and thumb of the hand. The inner flange 13 which extends down from the plate 10, rests snugly against the inner side of the front wall 11 of the box and holds the lifting plate 10 from slipping out beneath the cover 12.
Referring to Figs. 3 and 4, disclosing a slight modification of the device, the upstanding flange 14 is provided along its upper edge with spaced overturned tongues 16 receiving therebetween the overturned tongues 17 disposed along the inner edge of the finger piece 15*. A pintle 18 passes through the registering overturned portions of the tongues 16 and 17 whereby the finger piece is hingedly supported upon the aforesaid upstanding flange. The advantage derived in so hinging the finger piece l5 'isthat in packing the same may be folded down close against the front wall 11 of the box so as to economize space and eliminate all possibility of accidental open ing during shipment.
For purposes of decoration the finger piece may be of any suitable design thus providing an ornament as well as an article of genuine utility.
In the use of the opener the same is positioned on the edge of the front wall 11 of the box having the flange 13 resting against the inner side of said wall as disclosed to advantage in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The
f fiopi es of this patent may be obteine d for changes in the construction and in the arrangement and combination of the several partsmay be resorted to Without departing such changes fall Within the scope of the appended claim;
from the spirit of my invention, provided f Having thus fully described my invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by liettersiPateiit is: g v y I *Aiconibination of a box including a body portion; and a cover hingedly connected with portion and resting upon the i upper e i lges. oi the Walls of said body portion' When in a closed position with an opener including a Wall resting upon' the upper edge of one Wall of said body port1on,an, inner Wall extending downyyardly into the body portion of the box from the first inentioned'v all of said opener, an outer Wall extending upwardly from the first mentioned yvall of said opener an'd a finger piece extending from theouter all of said opener;
