ARTIFICIAL TOOTH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 3, 1915.
Application filed December 23, 1913. Serial No. 808,431.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK L. AneALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Jose, in the county of Santa Clara and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Artificial Teeth; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention comprehends improvements in artificial teeth and relates more particularly to those of the type including a porcelain facing or tooth proper and a metallic backing to which the facing is rigidly secured.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a tooth having a backing formed with a recess in which an offset portion or lug formed upon the lingual surface of the facing or tooth proper is seated, and a plu rality of pins projecting forwardly from the recessed portion of the hacking into openings formed in the facing.
Another object of the invention is to provide a tooth of extremely simple construction, which is strong, durable and which constitutes a general improvement over other artificial teeth now in use.
With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a central longitudinal sectional view through my improved artificial tooth, Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the backing shown in Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the facing shown in Fig. 1.
Referring in detail to the drawings by Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the numerals, 5 designates a metallic backing which may, of course, be of different shapes to conform to various teeth, such as molars, bicuspids, cuspids and incisors. The backing is formed with a'transverse recess or pocket 6 extending entirely across the same, opening upon the forward face thereof and haying its ends closed by the flanges 7. A pair of pins 8 are secured to the rear wall of the recess 6 and extend forwardly therefrom at essentially right angles to said wall and project into openings 9 formed in the facing 10. This facing is formed with an offset portion or lug upon its palatine or lingual surface which fits snugly within the recess 6 and which engages the downwardly facing shoulder 11. This lug takes most of the strain from the pins 8, thus affording a very substantial artificial tooth. If desired, the backing may be formed with 'a tip or crown 12 to further strengthen the facing 10.
In use, the facing of my improved artificial tooth is securely connected to the back ing by cementing the pins 8 within the openings 9, and it will be apparent that this method of attachment permits of the facing being removed and replaced by another at any time.
Having thus described my claim An artificial tooth comprising a backing L shape in cross section and having a transverse recess in the front face defining a downwardly facing shoulder, relativelv thin reinforcing flanges formed at the ends of said backing, pins secured in the recessed portion of said backing, a facing having openings receiving said pins, and a transversely extending lug on the lingual surface of said casing snugly fitting in said recess.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK L. ARGALL.
