, In Fig. 2 the type-carrier is illustrated as comprising a series of rotatable members 6 which may be adjusted ina partially or wholly independent manner so as to produce type-lines of a great variety by the various combinations of the groups of types on the carriers. In the case of a check-writing machine the groups of characters 18von the first two drums 6 are arranged topeXpress the amount of a check in words, while the groups 19 o-n the last two drums are used Ato express the amount of the check in figures. In Fig. 3, on the other hand, the type-carrier is shown in the form of a single drum 17 upon which the lines of type are permanently arranged. It will be understood that, so far as the present invention is concerned, it is immaterial which of these two arrangements is employed in the type-carrier.
In the case of each type-carrier illustrated it will be vseen that the types are so grouped in eachjline that there is a substantial space 20, near the right-hand end of the line where there are no types to coperate the platen 1Q. The present invention resides in theV provi.- sion of an abutment at this point, this abutment being in the form of a projection 21 on the upper surface o-f a bar 22 which is fixed transversely in the casing of the mac chine. j This projection 21 is type-high, that is to say, its Aupper surface lies in the same plane as the tops of the types in the typeline which may at any time be in coperative relation with the platen. Accordingly, it
resists downward movement of the platen in the same manner as do the types. Owing to the fact that it presents an unbroken surface to the platen, it is not necessary that this abutment shall fill kout the entire unoccupied space 20 in the type-line in order to equalize the pressureat opposite ends of the platen.
In the illustratedv machine the types are inked by engagement with an ink-roller 23 journaled in the casing yof themachine, this engagement being produced by the rotation of the type-carrier in selecting thel required type-line for operation. Since the abutment 21 does not receivev any ink upon its upper surface it may engage the face of they checkblank, as is necessary in the performance of its functions, without producing any mark or offset uponthe blank.

In a machine of the type described, the combination,` with a platen faced with yielding material, ar type-carrier substantially co-extensive kwith the length ofthe platen but provided with a series oftypelines yof rigid material, each comprisingl charactersgrouped so as. to` coperate with substantially less than `the, entire length of the platen, means for moving the type-carrier to lbring ,its type-lines selectively into` coperative relation withthe platen, and means for inking the types in consequence of such movement; of a stationary abutment fixed in position to be engaged, during the impressing operation, by the portion of the platenV with which the types do not coperate, so as to substantially equalize the working pressure upon the platen during the production of an impression.

In a machine of the type described, the combination, with an elongated platen supported and actuated at the middle of its length, a type-carrier substantially co-eX- tensive with the length Y'of the platen but provided with a series of type-lines each comprising characters grouped soas to co-` operate Vwith a greater part of the length of the platen at oneside of its middle point than at the other side, and means for moving the type-carrier to bring its type-lines selectivelyv into cooperative relation with the'platen; of a stationaryabutment fixed inposition to be engaged, vduring the imiio pressing operation, by a portion of the platen With which the types do not coperate, so as to substantially equalize the pressure against the platen on opposite sides of its point of support.

In a machine of the type described, the combination, With a platen, a type-carrier provided With a series of type-lines all having blank intermediate spaces at corresponding points, and means for moving the type-carrier to bring its type-lines selectively into operative relation with the platen; of a stationary abutment xed in position to occupy said blank space in Whichever of the type-lines is in position to be engaged by the platen.
