To all whom t may concern.' f
Be it known that I, GnAN'rE.-A-LLEMAN,` a citizen of the United States', yresiding at Shoemakersvilldin the county ofBerks and State of Pennsylvania.,
tain new and useful improvements in Dredging-Machines, of which the following is a specification. f I
My invention relates particularly yto dredging machines, and is especially applicable to machines designed-for*reclaiming fugitive coal which iswashed down' from the mining districts the bottom of rivers and streams.
The principal objects ofmy'finven'tion are,iv
to provide a dredgingwmachine having its parts so yinterchangeable asy "to 'permit of great flexibilityy y means` for agitating the coal deposits adjacent to the mouth of the suction-pipe; to provide means for `quickly" reversingthe,k said agitating meaii's;`-and togprorv vide means for preventing sticks and other motion of debris from entering ,the suction pipe."y
Other objects of my invention are, tofpro! r vide a dredging machine having its"'-p`arts so constructedas to preventclogging, due' to any solid particles collecting between relatively inovablesurfaces; and to pro'videa rotary pump haviiigits chamber increasing i in area toward its outlet.`` My agitator', and includesmeans `for preventing a slackening of' said belt adjacentto the mouth oi' the suction pipey My invention arrangement hereinafter more deiinitelydescribed. ln the accompanying Adrawiugs,'Figure 1 is a side elevational viewota iloatfcarrying dredging machinery constructed in accordance with iiiyinvention, the parts' being shown in their operative position; Fig".` -2is' a view similar n suction pipe raised to its inoperative posi-L tion; Fig. 3 is tion as shown mentary plan view of the intake end ofthe suction pipe; Fig. 5 is a central vertical lontalren onthe rline a transverse verti- 5-5 in Fig. 4;; Fig. 6 is have invented oerand is deposited yupon p p swivel ring,
of operation; jto 'provide' l`l1`-igplf Y j The pipe IOV is provided intermediate of itsends with the frame l5,Vv having the up*- wardly extending bail 16, nwhich is connected'tofone end ofthechain 17 whichy extends,
invention coniprehend's an endless belt further includes allir of the" ifarious novel ,features of; construction and ,thesprocket-304m proclret 30 is mounted on the shaft I to Fig. 1, but showing the' a plan view oftheconstruc' in Fig. 2; Fig. l is a frag' the engine'2, connected through thecontroll-k ling clutch 3, having the operating vlever 4l, by the chainbelt 5 with the shaft 'of the pump 7, said shaft' being supported in the bearing block 8.'
he f pump Z i`s` connected through the or collar 9 y movable suction pipe l0, which is Vsupported withl the` relatively in the bearing-block l2 and eXtendslatera-lly i from,y said pump and turnsy in alongsweeping bend 13 int'o'longitudinal relationto the side of the y tance therefrom, ^so `as to'V cally the bed"r ofthe stream,
overthe pulleys' 18 and l19 on the frame 2O ofthe windlass'ft'-which"the other end of said chaifnisconnected.-y
The Vv'findlass-comprises the shaft 2l which is mesh withthe pinion 23, to which the op'ei'atinghandle 2e' may be attached. *"*f he `frame l5 carries depending supports float and ata suitable dise,` be swung vertify and thereby'present its intake end' yat as best shown. in`
V journaledf in the li'iprightsot the. frame 20,*fand-ivhich, carries the gear 22 25,*npon1'which is., suspended the guide`f-26 n n n l n ,i 7 over which the `agitating chain belt 27 slides, and which' provides i ka convenient intermediate support tforsaid beltl27;7 whichi-is can Y' by the pulleys 29, and which isrydriven `ried`=atthe intake end of the suction" pipe l0` Varranged tobe selectively engaged having'the con-j 44. j Said clutch 43,1,as best` spaced gears 39 and 40, respectively'having op'posedyclutch bosses 41and`42vwhich are axially movable clutch 43, trolling. lever d shownin Fig. 3,7is keyed to theshaft 36 and is thereby caused to rotate therewith irrespective of the gears 39 and 40, with which it may be connected. Y Y f Y.
The gear 39 is directly. in mesh with the gear 45, ywhich Yis mounted on the shaft 6 and arranged to rotate therewith, while the gear 40 is connected through the idler Thus it will be seen -that Copies of this Ypatent maybe ottained'forpve entseach, by addressing thi-I n f 'd Washngtongl). C.
the upper .portion for a considerable distance over y is kprovided to 46 with thegear 47, which is mountedon the shaft 6 and arranged to rotate therewith.
ythe gears 39 and 40 are rotated in opposite directions, and there fore when the clutch 43 v i one or the other, the shaft 36 will be caused to rotate in accordance therewith, so that the agitating belt 27 may be driven in either direction and quickly reversed. y Asbest shown in Figs.f4 and 5, the intake end of the pipe 10 is provided with al bear ing frame 49'for the shaft 50 of the pulleys y 29,"and comprises side plates whose forward ends. 51 diverge toward the respectiyepulfV prevent pebbles or'other debris .from

This apron which`A may ybe 'carried thereby, of sticks of woodis intended -to and in case ging the in pipelO.: L
As best shown inFigs.

i Vmountedon said frames, shed-the chain of any debris shear kthem f into such lengths as to be incapable of cloggradually increases in area toward the outlet 62, whereby the solid particles being forced therethrough cannot possibly become clogged therein, so that a; free passage is insured. v
Tt will be seen in Fig. 8 that the openings Ain' the sides of the pump casing are ofy the same size, and the casing yis. otherwise symsoA l flange and stuffing-box flangev may be rel do not' desire to limitrmy invention the precise details of construction and. arrangement 'as shown herein, as it is obviousl that various modifications may be made from the essentherein.l V'without departing y defined by tial features of my invention as the appended claims. v VHaving thus described my invention, l claim: y
1. In a dredging machine, the combination with a suction pipe having opening, of a pump, ya swivel connection bemeans for raising and lowering the intake end of said pipe, a frame at the intake end of said pipe,
Vpulleys mounted on said frame, a sprocket a chain belt having a carried by s aid sprocket and pulleys, a guide for supporting said belt intermediateof said sprocket and pulleys, supported on said frame at one end and restmay be carried thereby. d y
2. In a dredging machine, tion lwith a suction pipe the .combinaspacedy transversescrapers mounted torotate over said opening, frames adjacent to the intake end of said pipe, Y plates whose .y free ends relatively diverge, and belt-supporting 'pulleys spaced from the body of saidplates and in contact with said diverging ends.
and an apron pivotally shedA any ydebris which and having side` that the inta-ke an intake soV v having an intake opening provided Awith a removable .shield or extension, of a chain belt having suitably` rotatably i ln witness whereof, l have hereunto set my hand April, A. D., 1914. y Y
