DES JARDINS, a citizen of the United States, residing in West Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Writing Machines, of which the-following is a specification.
My invention relates to typewriting machines, and is herein disclosed as applied to a No. 2 Remington typewriting machine having the usual traveling carriage, which includes the platen on which printing is done, and also having the usual type keys in the keyboard at the front of the machine. In such machines it is extremely advantageous to rapidly position the typewriter carriage when traveling in either direction, and my invention is directed to such means, which may be called tabulating Lmeans.
In the form herein illustrated, I provide a stop on the typewritercar'riage, and a counter-stop. One of these may be manually set from its normal ineffective position, to an effective position, and there is such relationship between the stops that they will arrest the typewriter carriage at the same letter-space, no matter in which direction said carriage is traveling.
The counter-stop may normally be in an ineffective position and settable along a stop-bar in any one of a series of positions. This bar may normally hold said stop in ineffective position, but may be man ually moved to effective position, and at the same time the tyepwriter carriage may be freed from its usual escapement mechanism, so that the said carriage will travel freely until arrested by the striking of the carriage stop against the counter-stop.

In the No. 2 Remington machine, printing keys 1 on the front ends of key levers 2, when depressed, draw down on typeoperating links 3 so as to swing type-bars 4 upward to cause types 5 thereon to print on the bottom of the platen 6. Said platen forms part of the usual. traveling carriage 7 which is normally drawn to the left by means of a spring-barrel 8. Said carriage is fed along under the tension of said spring-barrel by means of a pair of feeding dogs 9, which alternately engage in a rack 10 pivoted to swing verticaily on the carriage 7. Whenever one of the printing keys 1 is depressed, these feeding dogs 9 are operated from said key by means of a universal bar 11, underlying the levers of said keys, which bar, whenever a printing key is depressed, draws down on a link 12 to rock a frame 13 of which the dogs 9 form a part, thus causing said dogs to alternately engage the rack 10 and allow the spring-barrel 8 to draw the carriage forward. In order to rapidly position the carriage, there is provided on said carriage T a stop 14 mounted on the longitudinal bar 15 forming part of. the usual Remington typewriter carriage, which stop comprises an arm 44. This bar is near the front of the machine and holds its stop adjacent a stop-carrying rack bar 16 which is slidable on theframe of the machine and carries a counter-stop 17 settable in any one of a series of openings 18 in said stop bar 16. The of range of the stop arm 44, but may be brought into range by means of a finger-piece'19 which, in a manner hereinafter described, shifts the stop bar 16 so as to raise it to such a position that the -stop 17 thereon will" strike the stop arm 44 as the typewriter carriage travels along and will thereby arrest said carriage. To accomplifii this, the finger-piece 19 is formed as forwardly extending from a rock arm 20 on a vertical shaft 21, said vertical shaft 21 being journaled at the bottom and top of the typewriting machine. This shaft 21 has fast thereon a second rock arm 22- provided with a pin 23 adapted to shift said stop bar 16 longitudinally, whenever the finger-piece 19 is actuated, to the left. When the finger-piece 19 is so actuated, the stop bar 16 is movedfrom the position shown in Fig. 5 where it is resting, in its lowermost position, on pins 24 beneath its opposite ends, and rides upon cam surfaces 25 which cooperate with said pins to lift the bar, said surfaces formed'as notches in the bar 16. When so lifted, the stop 17 lies in the path of the stop arm 44, and therefore arrests the carriage as said carriage moves along.
To permit the necessary freedom of movement of the rock arm 22 and the stop bar 16, said bar is provided with an elbow projection 26 having a slot 27 in which the pin 23 on the rock arm slides, and said pin is of suflicient length to prevent the stop bar 16 from sliding clear thereof when moving from its upper to its lower position.
In order to indicate at whatexact letterspace or denomination the typewriter carriage will be arrested, the finger-piece 19 includes an indicator pawl 28 which is adapted to ride over a rack 29 comprising a graduated scale, so that when the finger-piece is held with the pawl in register with any one of the teeth on said rack, the typewriter carriage willbe arrested at a corresponding position on the carriage scale by the stop 17. This rack is formed with teeth each having a vertical and an inclined side, and the pawl 28 is pivotally mounted on a thumb-piece 30, so that it can be drawn clear of the teeth at will.
The pawl 28 is guided in a slot formed in a lug 31 rising above a side extension 32. of the finger-piece 19. The thumb-piece 30 is pivoted on said finger-piece, so that by press ing against the left-hand projection of said thumb-piece, the pawl will be withdrawn.
The pawlis normally held in its effective position by means of a spring 33, which 1s mounted on the finger-piece and presses the pawl in toward the rack 29. Whenever the pawl 28 is engaged with any one of the rack teeth 29 it lies against such tooth in such a way that if the typewriter carriage is violently arrested by the stops 17 and 14, the shock of arresting the carriage will be taken by the vertical face of said tooth.
The finger-piece 19 may be provided with a portion 34 adapted to fit the hand of an operative and projecting toward the front of the machine adjacent the keyboard and at about the same height as said keyboard. If the finger-piece 19 is set to arrest the typewriter carriage at any one of the eight teeth shown in the rack 29, the carriage may be released from its escapement by lifting the rack 10 therefrom, thus allowing the springbarrel 8 to draw the carriage to the left. For this purpose, there. is provided a car- .su'ch arrest riage-release key 35 adjacent the keyboard at the front of the machine, on the front end of a bell crank key lever 36, the rear arm 37 of which drops downwardly and is adapted to thrust rearwardly a link 38. \Vhenever this link 38 isthrust rearwardly, it raises the rack 1C out of reach of the escapement dogs 9. For this purpose, the link 38 is pivoted to a bell crank 39 at the rear of the machine, and said bell crank, whenever the link 38 moves rearwardly, draws downward a second link 40, which link is pivoted to the rear end 41 of a forwardly-extending lever 42, said lever carrying at its front end a boss 43 adapted to lift the rack bar 10 clear of the dogs 9. When thus lifted, as above 'escribed, the spring-barrel 8 draws the carriage along until arrested by the stop 14 which intercepts the counter-stop 17 In order to provide that the tabulating device may be utilized for the whether traveling forward or backward, the swinging stop arm 44 is formed with a slot 45 embracing a pin 46 fixed on the body of thestop. The swinging arm 44 is pivoted to the rear end of the stop at 47, thus enabling a definite latitude of tude of movement is just sufficient to allow for the thickness of the arm 44 where it strikes the counter-stop 17, plus the thickness of the counter-stop 17. The arresting of the carriage in letter-feeding direction swings the arm 44 to the position shown in Fig. 3 when the arm 44 strikes the stop 17 Said arm 44 is normally held by a spring 48 in the position in which it stands when it arrests the typewriter carriage in its backward movement, as seen in Fig. 2.
Springs 49 may be provided at each end of the machine for drawing the stop bar 16 downward so as to positively'hold it in ineffective position, said springs engaging extensions 50 of said bar.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others.
Havingthus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a typewriting machine, the combination, with a carriage, and an escapement therefor; of a tabulating stop for said carriage; and a device for initially shifting the stop in one direction into position to arrest said carriage and subsequently adjusting said stop in a different direction to effect at a predetermined point in the travel of the carriage, during a single movement of said device in one direction.
2. In a typewriting machine, the combination, with a carriage, and an escapement therefor; of a tabulating stop for said carriage; and a member movable in a horizontal direction only for initially shifting the stop into position to arrest said carriage and subsequently adjusting said step to effect movement. This laticarriage masses such arrest at a predetermined point in the travel of the carriage, during a single move ment of said member in one direction.
3. In a typewriting machine, the comblnation, with a carriage, and an escapement therefor; of a tabulating stop for said car-' riage; and a device for initially raising said stop into position to arrest said carriage and subsequently adjusting it laterally to eflect such arrest at a predetermined point in the travel of the carriage, during a single move ment of said device in one direction.
4:. In a typewriting machine, the combination, with a carriage, and an escapement therefor; of a tabulating stop for said carriage; and a member movable in a horizontal direction only for initially raising the stop into position to arrest said carriage and subsequently adjusting said stop laterally to effect such arrest at a predetermined point in the travel of the carriage, during a single movement of said member in one direction.
,5. In a typewriting machine, the combination, with a carriage, and an escapement therefor; of a tabulating stop for said carriage; and a member movable only in a single plane for initially shifting the stop in one direction into position to arrest said carriage and subsequently adjusting said stop in a different direction to efiectsuch arrest at a predetermined point in the travel of the carriage, during movement of said member in said plane.
6. In a typewriting machine, the combination, with a carriage, and an escapement therefor; riage; and a member movable only in a single plane for initially raising said stop into position to arrest said carriage an subsequently adjusting said stop laterally to effect such arrest at a predetermined point in the travel of the carriage, during movement of said member in said plane.

In a typewriting machine, the combination, with a carriage, and an escapement therefor; of a tabulating stop for said carriage; abar whereon said stopis mounted; and a device for" initiallyshifting said bar in one direction to move said stop into position to arrest said carriage and subsequently shifting said bar in another direction to ad just said stop to efiect such arrest at a predetermined point in the travel ofthe carof a tabulating stop for said carriage, during a single movement of said device in one direction.
9. In a typewriting machine, the combination, with a carriage, and an escapement therefor; of a tabulating stop for said carriage; a horizontal bar whereon said stop the carriage.

In a typewriting machine, the combination, with a carriage, and an escapement therefor; of a tabulating stop for said carriage; an endwise-movable bar whereon said stop is mounted; and means for shifting said bar endwise to adjust. said stop with relation to said carriage, said bar having means associated with it whereby it is automatically. shifted laterally at the commencement of its endwise movement to bring said stop into position to arrest said carriage.
11. In a typewriting machine, the combination, With a carriage, and an escapement therefor; of a tabulating stop for said carriage; an endwise-movable, horizontal bar whereon said stop is mounted; and means for shifting said bar endwise to adjust said stop with relation to said carriage, said bar having means associated with it whereby it is automatically raised at the commencement of its endwise movement to bring said stop into position to arrest said carriage.
12. In a typewriting machine, the combination, with a carriage, and an escapement therefor; of a tabulating stop forsaid carriage; an endwise movable bar whereon said stop is mounted; and a manually-operable member movable only in a single plane for.
' ually-operable member for shifting said bar endwise to adjust said stop with relation to said carriage, said bar havingmeans associated with it whereby it is automatically raised at the commencement of its endwise movement to bring said stop into position to arrest said carriage.
14. In a typewriting machine,'the combination, with a carriage, and an escapement therefor; of a tabulatingfstop for said carriage an endwise-movablasjar whereon said stop is mounted; supporting pins for said bar; and means for shifting said bar endwise to adjust said stop with relation to said carriage, said bar having means 00- operative with said pins to automatically shift it latei'ally at the commencement of its endwise movement to bring said stop into position to arrest said carriage.
15. In a typewriting'machine, the combination, with a carriage, and an escapement therefor; of a tabulating stop for said car riage; an endwise-movable bar whereon said stop is mounted; supporting pins for said bar; and means for shifting said bar endwise to adjust said stop with relation to said carriage, said bar having :cams cooperative with said pins to automatically shift it laterally at the commencement of its endwise movement to bring said stop into position to arrest said carriage.
16. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a traveling carriage and a stop thereon, of a counter stop for engaging the first-named stop to arrest said carriage, means for variably selecting the letter space at which said counter stop shall arrest said carriage, a bar on which said counter stop is mounted, and pins on which said bar is slidable endwise, said pins operative during the sliding movement of said bar to shift the latter bodily in one direction, thereby to move said counter stop into effective position with relation to said first-named stop.
17. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a traveling carriage and a stop thereon, of a counter stop for engaging the first-named stop to arrest said carriage, means for variably selecting the letter space at which said counter stop shall arrest said carriage, a movable bar on whiclnsaid counter stop is mounted, and cams operative during the movement of said bar to shift it bodily in one direction, thereby to move the counter stop into effective position with relation to said firstnamed stop.
18. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a traveling carriage and a stop thereon, of a counter-stop for said carriage, a vertically-movable bar Whereon said counter-stop is adjustably mounted, a support for said bar normally holding said bar in ineffective, lowered position, a manuallyoperated device shiftable in one direction to raise said bar bodily into effective position, said manually-operated device including an indicator, and a scale across which said indicator travels during such shifting of said device adapted to indicate at what point said carriage shall be arrested by said counter-stop. v t 19. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a traveling carriage and a stop thereon, of a counter-stop for said carriage, a bar provided with a series of openings adapted to hold said counter-stop, a support for said bar norinally holding said bar thereon, of a counter-stop for said carriage,

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a-traveling carriage and a stop thereon, of a counter-stop for said carriage, a rack bar adapted to hold said counterstop, a support for said bar normally holding said. bar ineffective, a manually operated device for moving said bar to effective position, said manually-operated device including an indicator, a scale across which said indicator travels, adapted to indicate at what point saidcarriage shall be arrested by said counter-stop, a shaft on which said manually-operated device is mounted, a rock arm fast on said shaft, said rock arm and said stop bar having a pin-and slot connection adapted to position said stop bar when said manually-operated device is operated, an escapement for-"said carriage, a keyboard for said typewriting machine, a support for said manually-operated device holding, said device adjacent said keyboard, and means operable from a point adjacent said keyboard for releasing said carriage from said escapement.

In atypewriting machine, the combination with a traveling carriage and a stop thereon, of a counter-stop, a verticallymovable barlon which said counter-stop is counter-stop, an escapemounted, manual means movable in one dimasses tion said counter-stop with relation to the firstenamed stop, a scale formlng a rack by which said counter-stop may be so positioned, said manually-operated device including a pawl which cotiperates with said rack to positively arrest said carriage at the selected point, an escapement for said carriage, a keyboard for said typew'riting ma chine, a support for said manually-operated device holding said device adjacent said keyboard, and means operable from a point adjacent said keyboard for releasing said carriage from said escapement.

In a typewriting machlne, the combination, with a carriage, a tabulating stop therefor, and, a bar whereon said stop is mounted, said bar being normally disposed in ineffective position; of a manual device for moving said bar into effective position; a rock shaft to which said device is secured; and an arm fixed to said shaft and connected to said bar, for positioning the latter when said device is actuated to, rock said shaft.

27, In a typewriting machine, the combination, with a carriage; of a'pair of stops mounted, one on the carriage, and the other on the machine frame, said stops being cooperative to arrest the carriage, and the carriage-mounted stop including an arm provided will a transverse slot, and a member whereon said arm is pivoted having a pro-j je'ction working insaid slot, to permit a limited swinging movement of said arm in both directions, thereby to enable such arrest to take place at the same point during" both forward and backward travel of the carriage.
