INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE.
APPLICATION FILED FEB.3.1913.

Application le Februaly 3, i913. :f-
To @ZZ 20j/0m ii' may conce/M2,
Be ii; known thai; L Jesse B. BRGWN, e itizen of ihe iied States, i'esiding zit 243 Buena Vista. street West, gezroit, Misiligan., have invented certain new and useful mplovemeiits in internal-Combustion gines, of which the foiloiving is e speeiiieetion.
rThis invention relates to impi'ovements iii internal combusion engines.
The improvements relate particuiei-i;y to an impieved valve strucm-e and mode '0i' operating and centroiiing he same whei'eiiy the chaige is so i'eguieed by e rejection si the surplus that great economy si operation is secured and undue and unnecessary heeting is so eompletely avoided es to avoid the necessity fes a water jacket on engines of the sizeiusualiy adopted for automobile use.
The/objeeis of zhis inventieii aie, iii-st. i0 provide en improved structure o valve means which coniiois both the intake and exhaust, cempiiisiiig boh a sieeve and pup pet valve; secondi to provide e valve of the dass described assecieied with en improved veive centi'oiiing mechanism; third, so provide an improved iegiiiaoie veive mechamism thai effectively consieis the intake whereby any surplus er excess charge will be rejected and returned to the intake meniioid; fourth? izo provide en impi'oved mesas fos manually, es by automeiic governo?, ceniifeiiig he iniziie valve ef an iiieiiiei eembusisieii engine while *die engine' iii mission.
'he and fuiiner objects relating ie economies and details ei@ @pei-aime. and censtiuciion viii?. deiiniteiy appear from the de* seiiption to follow.
accomplish iie objects of my inveniion 'by ldie devices and ineens desciioed in the following specification.
The invention is clearly defined poiiiied out in the ciaims` S0 much of an euiomobile engine it, is necessary io iiiustifete io show one preersed embodiment of invention iuiiv iiiustreied in the accompanying deiving, consiitusing peri; of this specification, in Whisk:

The cylinder head 12 is ribbed on the outer surface to facilitate cooling and is re cessed to connect the cylinder to the valve ports.
The puppet valve 8 is controlled by connections to the cam of thecam shaft. The lower end of valve stein 8 is provided with {iange 13 retained by cross pin M to receive the thrust of the valve spring 15, which forces the Valve 8 tight into its seat.. An adjusting screw 17 is threaded into the upper end of' push rod 16. The push rod 16 rests uponA the control. thrust bar 18 above the cam 19 on the cam shaft 21.
The shortened and curved portion 18 of the controlv thrust bar coacts With the cam. 20, and owing to its form, When shifted backward and forward, times the action of the puppet valve to vary the amount of theV charge retained in the engine cylinder from a full charge to such minimum amount as. the character of the fuel or the particular duty of the engine seem to require. The relation of these parts clearly appears in Fig. X. The cam 19, by its action, opens the intake valve and the cam 20A regulates the f closing of the same by coacting with the V8 closes under compression.
shortened and specially formed part 18 of the control thrust bar 18. An import-ant part of my invention is these coacting parts 18 and 20.
The sleeve valve 27 is controlled by a crank pin `21 on the cam shaft 21. suitable guide pin 28 extends down fr"` in the valve and is secured to plunger 29 b 1 cross pin 8 0. (See Fig. VI). A. hook or slotted part 3 1 carried by the loWer end of plunger 29 permits of lateral motion of the crank pin 21", Which reciprocates the valve stern 28 and the sleeve valve 2i'. The sleeve valve .27, when in its upper position, opens the -the top. This permits the charge to be taken in. Tvihen the charge is taken in, the sleeve 27 descends after the puppet IlVhen the charge has been fired, the puppet 8 is raised by the cam and opened While the sleeve is in lowest position, and the exhaust then being open the burnt gases pass out ofY the exhaust and the engi" ave-ages.
The upper end of eve valve is thickened at 2'?" and the annular er, largementl il at the ninet central 1G tubular 0fuide 9 and secures suitable connections from some convenient part, as means on the steering column of an automobile.
The guides for the valve push rods are shown directly supported in. the main casing. These guides can, of course, be supported in various Ways by separate brackets not necessary here to illustrate.
rIhe control thrust bar can be coupled to suitable governor means, making the regulation of the engine automatic. I prefer, however, the manual control of this part and have illustrated that part specically in this application, and desireto claim the same specifically, as Well as broadly.
I have described the valve 27 as a sleeve valve. It might also be described as a piston valve, and could readily be adapted to this use, although it was not made hollow, and in defining the same broadly and in these broad relations, I have referred to it as a piston valve. It is, of course, a-sleeve piston valve. Itdoes not matter Whether the valves are controlled by cams or eccen- I have shown a preferred formw which I Wish to claim specifically in this case, along with broad claims to the generic structure, as'Will be seen by reference to the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: v
l. In an internal combustion. engine, the combination of a puppet valve provided with a valve stein, a push rod adjustably secured to the end of. said valve stem, a cam shaft, a pair of cams provided on said cam shaft, a control thrust bar interposed between said push rod and said cams said control bar having a longer portion engaging one .of said cams and supporting the end of said push rod, and a shorter portion having a curved outer end engagingthe other of said cams, and means for actuating said control thrust bar, all coactingJ substantially as described for the purpose specified.
