OSCAR J. PETERSON, OF IRON BELT, WISCONSIN,
BRAKE.
Application filed September 15, 1914.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR J. PETERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Iron Belt, in the county of Iron and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Brakes, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to an improvement in brakes for track traveling vehicles, and particularly to a mechanism designed for cooperation with the rails and operable through any of the preferred types of operating mechanism.
The main object of the present invention is the provision of rail engaging shoes having movable connection with the truck can ried beams and operable through a lever system from any automatic or hand mechanisms to depress or elevate said shoes with relation to the rails.
The invention in the preferred form of de tails will be described in the following specification, reference being had particularly to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating the improved construction. Fig. 2 is a section on line 5-5 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the guide supports.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawings, the improved braking mechanism comprises duplicate shoes 1, having a width exceeding that of the rail 2, and formed on the inner edge with a flange 3 to prevent lateral separation from the rail when in braking position.
A plate 7 is secured to each end of the bolster, in which is supported a pivot rod 8, and hinge leaves 9 and 10 are connected respectively to the pivot rods and to the brake shoe, the meeting ends of these leaves being in turn connected by a pivot rod 11. Preferably, though not necessarily, the leaves 10 are arranged beyond the leaves 9, and there is thus provided what may be termed a toggle lever connection between the bolster 6 and each brake shoe, as will be fully apparent from the drawings. A pull rod 12 is connected to each pivot rod 11, preferably centrally thereof, and between the hinge sections 9, the inner ends of these rods being Specification of Letters Patent.

connected to the straight arm 13 of a Y- lever 14, pivotally supported at 15 upon appropriate part of the structure. The Y-lever is arranged in horizontal position, that is in parallelism with the rails, and the branch 16 of said lever is connected to the operating rod 17 which in turn is connected to any suitable type of operating mechanism, whether of the air brake, automatic, or hand mechanism. The shoes 1 are provided with uprights 18 slidably mounted at their upper ends in brackets 19 secured to the beam 6, guide arms 20 being also secured to the beam and extending downwardly and laterally therefrom, and terminally formed with sockets 21 to slidably receive uprights 1,8. Bracket plates 22 are permanently secured to the axle boxes of the truck frame, each of said plates being provided with pivotally connected arms 23 and 24C. Arms 23 are movably connected to socket members 21 which slidably embrace the uprights 18, while the arms 24: are terminally formed with slots 26 to receive pins 27 projecting from the shoe 1. By this arrangement, it is obvious that the shoe is accurately guided in its movement and that notwithstanding the extraordinary strain thereon in use, will at all times remain in position to be effective for the purpose designed.
From the above description, it will be obvious that in movement of the lever 14 in one direction, the pull rods will be drawn toward each other with the effect to straighten the toggle lever connections between the beam 6 and the brake shoes, forcing the latter into braking cooperation with the rails, a reverse movement of the parts elevating the brake shoes, and controlling such braking connection with the rails.
What is claimed is A braking mechanism for track traveling vehicles having a bolster and including brake shoes, plates secured to the respective ends of the bolster, toggle levers connected respectively to said plates and to the brake shoes, brackets secured to the side edges of the bolster adj aoent the ends thereof, guiderods extending from the brake shoes and movably guided between the brackets and bolster, arms pivotally connected to the In testimony whereof I afiix my signature truck structure, said arms being arranged in in presence of tWo Witnesses.
pairs for each guide rod, the inner terminals of one arm of each pair being slidably c011 OSCAR PETERSON vnected to the guide-rods; the inner terminal Witnesses:
of the remaining arm of each pair being FRANK MANDELIN, movably connected to the brake shoe. OSCAR LAAJALA.
