Description

P. J. FITZGERALD.
BATTERY CONNECTOR.
APPLICATION FILED NOV. 10, m4.
Patented July 27, 1915.-
IEATRICK J. FITZGERALD, OF TORRINGTON, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE FITZ- GERALD MANUFACTURING COMPANY, A FIRM COMPOSED 0F MAURICE J. FITZ- GERALD AND PATRICK J. FITZGERALD, OF TORRINGTON, CONNECTICUT.
BATTERY-CONNECTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 2?, i915.
To all 1071 om it may concern:
Be it known that I, PATRICK J. FITZ- GERALD, a. citizen of the United States residing at Torrington, in the county of Litchfield, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 1n Battery-Connectors, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the figures of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to improvements in battery connectors or binding clips employed for connecting the terminal of an electric wire or conductor to the binding post of a battery spark plug or other similar member;
the object being to provide a simple, eifective and durable device of this character which can be readily applied to or disengaged from a binding post or like member, and which will form a good electrical connection with said member.
The invention, therefore, consists in the improvements hereinafter described and referred to in the appended claims.
In the drawings,-Figure 1 shows two batteries connected with this connector; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the clamp; Fig. 3 is a cross section; Figs. 4: and 5 are detail views showing the manner of connecting the clip to the wire.
As shown in the drawings, the clip or terminal of the connector is formed of a piece of spring metal comprising the turn or loop 1 and the two sides. One side is bent to form an angle plate having the vertical portion :2; and the horizontal portion 3. The latter has an opening 4 to fit over the binding post 5. The other side is bowed as at 6, and has an oppositely inclined bottom flange 7, which under the spring action of the clamp acts as a spring against the binding post when the clamp is applied thereto. An elongated opening 8 in the bowed portion accommodates the binding post.
The flanged lower end of the inside of the loop and the perforations in the loops are so arranged that when the sides of the clamp are compressed together the clamp may be placed over an electrode, and when released the flanged lower end of the inside loop strongly bites the binding post.
In the turn 1 of the clamp, the flexible conductor 9 is placed, a tang 10 being struck down from the wall of the turn and the loose wire ends 11 of the conductor being bent back and forced over the tang and the loop clamped around the conductor. This clamping is still stronger when the sides of the clamp are compressed together and the clamp is in place on the electrode.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. connectorfor electric conductors, comprising a spring loop having two side plates, the outer of which is an angle plate, the free end thereof having an opening to receive a binding post, the inner plate being bowed and at its free end bent inwardly toward the outer plate and at its lower extremity adjacent the outer plate engaging by spring pressure the binding post.
2. A connector for electric conductors, comprising a spring loop having two side plates, the outer of which is an angle plate, the free end thereof having an opening to receive abinding post, the inner plate being bowed and at its free end bent inwardly toward the outer plate and having an oppositely inclined bottom flange to engage by spring pressure the binding post, the bowed portion having an elongated opening to permit the passage of the binding post.
3. A battery connector or the like having a terminal clip provided with a spring loop or turn, uniting opposing wings adapted to engage a binding post, said loop or turn having a tang, and a connecting wire, the bared end of which is inserted in the loop or turn between the upper wall thereof and the tang and the body of the wire being held in said loop or turn below the tang.
In testimony whereof, I hereby afliX my official signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
PATRICK J. FITZGERALD.
