SUPPORT vFor. visas.
Application led Apri1`22, 1914. Serial No.. 333,627?.
T0 all 'whom it may concern .1 i v Beit known ythat we, VICTORIA Tnnnrand EDWARD TERRY, subjects 0f the King of Great Britain, residing at Milton Hall, 117 Loughboroughv Park, Brixton, England, have invented new and useful lmprovements in Supports for Vises, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to mountings or supports for vises and the object we have in view is to provide improved means where-y by ka vise or similar work holding device may be readily moved into and retained in any desired position either upon the top ofV the workbench or upon the vertical face Lor end of said bench thereby facilitating access to the work held by saidvise.
In order that our invention may be readily understood and carried into effect by those skilled in the art to whichit appertains we will now proceed to describe the same fully for which purpose reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 represents a plan view of a 'device embodying this invention. Fig. 2 is a section taken along the line a-a of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view illustrating the vise occupying a position against the vertical front or end of the workbench.
ln thefpreferred embodiment of the in-` vention we provide a bed plate formed in two parts, 1, 2 and connected by a hinge 3 whereby the parts 2 may be dropped into a vertical position. The bedplate is provided with upstanding edges 4 upon three of its sides the inner walls of said flanges being undercut as seen more clearly at 5 in Fig. 3. The portion 1 of said bed-plate is provided with two longitudinal slots', 7 and also with abolt hole 8 (Fig. 2) whereby it may be pivotally connected to the work bench when desired. A number of bolt holes or recesses 9 and 10 are provided in the portions 1 and 2 respectively of the bedplate for a purpose which will hereinafter appear.
Mounted to slide longitudinally in and revolve upon the kaforesaid bed plate is a circular turntable 11 the edge of which is beveled to engage the undercut portions 5 of the flanges 4 thus ypreventing it from 'being lifted vertically from the bedplate.k yThe turntable 11 is provided with a spring controlled stud or bolt 12 adapted to take into any of the holes or recesses 9 10 in the bed- Specicaton of Letters Patent.

plate when the turntable has lbeen rotated into the desired position.
The vise or other work holding device 13 which may be of any appropriate construction is positively secured to the turntable 11 as for instance by means of the bolts and nuts 14.
The operation of our improved device is as follows: The bedplate 1 is secured kto the work-bench either by means of abolt passed through the bolt hole S-if it is `desired to secure it pivotally to the bench-#or by means of bolts passed through` the slots 6 and 7 if it is desired to allow of longitudinal movement of the bedplate upon the bench. lThe vise 13 having been bolted t0 the circular turntable 11 this latter is engaged in the bed plate byl sliding it in from the open end 15. (Fig. 1) the beveled edge of the turntable 11 taking under the overhanging walls 5 of the bedplate. The turntable with the attached vise can now be moved lengthwise of the 'bedplate'or the-vise may be caused to occupy any angular position with respect to the bedplate by simply rotating it and the turntable bodily the spring and stud 12 be ing lifted and then dropped into any one of the recesses 9 in the bedplate thus holding the turntable in the desired position.
Itis sometimes necessary or convenient that a vise should be placed vertically that is to say arranged upon the vertical front or end of the bench and this may be readily 4effected by means'of our improved device.
against the end wall or iiange 4 of the por-V tion 2-of the bedplate.r The bedplate is then moved along the bench until the hinge 3 c0- incides with the end of the bench when the portion 2 of said bedplate is Vdropped into the position indicated in Fig. 3. The recesses 10 serve a similar purpose to the recesses 9 above described that is to say they are adapted to receive the spring bolt 12 so allowing the Avise to be adjusted in any desiredv angular position. In Figs. 1 and 3 we have indicated in broken lines two of such angular positions of the turntable and vise.
It will be seen that under our invention we have provided a construction which will admit `of a vise or cramp being redily moved into any desired position either upon the top of a work bench or upon the vertical front or ends with aminimumof-.laborand ex nierous changes of construction and'operation may be made Without departing fromy the spirit and scope of the invention and We therefore'donot Wish'to be understood as limiting ourselves by thepesitive terms employed in connection With .the description excepting Ysuch as lthe 'fstate off :the 1 lart may require. v
