tated in the same direction as by turning the handle in the clockwise direction.
In the construction shown, the wheel 24e has forty-live teeth, and the arrangement of the parts is such as to require the eccentric head 21 to make nine complete revolutions, thereby actuating the ratchet nine times to cause the pump to pump one gallon of gasolent into or out of the tank and to turn the dial the distance from one indication 27 to the next; so that a person observing the dial while the pump is being operated may readily read thereon, with the aid of the index-finger, the number of gallons and :tractions of a gallon being pumped. 0f course, this particular arrangement for actuatingr the dial may be varied to suit different purposes. For pumping the liquid into the tank, from any suitable source, the handle l5 is turned in the counter-clockwise direction, but preparatory to so turning it the camliead 12 must be moved inwardly to raise and hold the valve 1l off its seat while the pump is being thus operated.
I realize that considerable variation is possible in the details of construction of my improved meter-device thus specifically shown and described, and I do not intend by illustrating' a single specific or preferred embodiment of my invention to be limited to such details; my intention being: in the following claims to claim protection upon all the novelty there may be in my invention as broadly as the state of the art will permit.
that I claim as new and. desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. In combination with a rotary pump having a pumping member rotatable in relatively opposite directions, a meter comprising a dial supported to turn axially, and means connecting said member and dial and operating to turn then dial only in one and ln combination with a rotary pump having a pumping member rotatable in relatively opposite directions.y a meter comprisinay a dial supper-ted to turn axially. and pawl and ratchet mechanism connecting said member and dial and operating to turn the dial only in one and the same direction by turning said member in either direction.
3. ln combination with a rotary pump having a pumping.r member rotatable in relatively pposite directions. a meter comprising a 4rotatably supported ratchet, a dial secured on Vthe ratchet-shaft. an eccentric on the shaft ot' said member, and a pawl eX- temline from the eccentric into engagement with the ratchet-teeth.
4. ln combination with a rotary pump having a pumping menxiber rotatable-in relatively opposite directi ,'ons,y a meter comprising a casing on the pump, a ratchet journaled in the casing, a dial secured on the ratchet-shaft, an eccentric in t-he casing,r on the shaft of saidmember, and a weifrhted pawl extendinglr from the eccentric into engagement with "the ratchet-teeth. f
ln combination with a rotary pump having,r a pumliing member rotatable in relatively opposite directions, a meter comprisingr a casing on the pump, a ratchet-journalcd in the casing, a dial secured on the ratchet-shaft, an index-linger extending,r over the dial-tace, an eccentric head on the shaft ot' said member in the casing, a strap loosely confined about said head, and a weighted pawl extending from said strap into engagement with the ratchet-teeth.
