Be it known that 1, CHARLES W. DORRI- oo'r'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful 1mprovements in Music-Roll Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in music roll holders for self playing musical instruments, and has for its object to improve and simplify the winding and rewinding mechanism of the music sheet.
To this end the invention comprises a continuously driving shaft mounted on the roll holder, from one end of which motion is conveyed through suitable mechanism to the take-up roll, and through the opposite end to the rewind mechanism, the shaft being driven continuously and at a constant speed.
Another feature of the invention relates to the tempo device connected with the takeup mechanism, which is both simple and positive in its action, and which by a simple movement of the lever enables the speed of the take-up roll to be varied from the normal time to the slowest or fastest speed necessary to give proper expression to the music being played, this change of speed for the take-up roll being accomplished without varying the speed of the driving shaft.
A further object of the invention relates to a simple manually operated device which when moved in one direction disengages the take-up roll from the driving shaft and couples said. shaft with the rewind mechanism; releases a brake normally acting on the music sheet spool to maintain tension of the music sheet while playing, and break the vacuum in the tracker bar whereby friction of the music sheet over said tracker bar is greatly reduced.
A still further object of the invention relates to a shield or guard for the keys of the musical instrument to which the player is attached, that prevents the free end of the music sheet when being rewound on the spool. from flying around with said spool and striking the key with the metal ring affixed thereto, by means of which the music sheet is connected to the take-up roll.
With these as the principal objects in view, and others which will be brought out later, attention is directed to the following specification, and to the accompanying drawings, in which,

Figure 1 is a front elevation of a music roll holder embodying the improvements hereinafter described certain portions being shown in section. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the roll holder as viewed from the left of Fig. 1, the cap inclosing the take-up mechanism being removed. Fig. 3 is a similar view from the opposite side of the roll holder showing the rewind mechanism, the cap covering said parts being removed. Fig. l is a rear elevation of the roll holder. Fig. 5 is a vertical central sectional view on the line 5-5, Fig. 1, somewhat enlarged. Fig. 6 is a perspective view illustrating a detail of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings A indicates the key base of a musical instrument, in the present case a piano, and B one of the piano keys. Slidable in suitable guides beneath the key base A is a plate 0 from which depend lugs D upon which the music roll holder 10 is pivoted by means of arms 11, projecting rearwardly therefrom, through the ends of which and the lugs D a pivot pin E passes.
The roll holder comprises two side plates 12, 13 in parallel relation, and connected together by a rear plate 14 extending between the side plates, and to which the arms 11 are connected. At the top of the side plate 12 is a spring projecting pivot pin 15 upon which one end of the music sheet spool 16 turns, the other end of said spool engaging a short shaft 17 mounted in a bearing in the top of the opposite side plate 13, said shaft being so formed on its inner end as to engage the spool and rotate the same whenever said shaft is turned. The outer end of the shaft has aflixed thereon a sprocket wheel 18, and between said sprocket wheel and the side plate 13, there is a brake collar or surface 19, against which a brake shoe 20 on a lever 21 pivoted at upon said side plate is held by a compression spring 23, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. The lower end of the lever 21 carries a roller 24: by means of which the lever is operated, and the brake removed from the spool at certain times as will hereinafter be described.
Extending between the side plates 12 and 13 on a lower plane than the music sheet spool and close to the front edges of said plates is a tracker bar 25 having openings or ducts 26 therein, which register with the openings in the music sheet F said ducts being connected with a suction conduit 27 for operating the playing devices through suitable pneumatics, electrical contacts or other devices well known to those skilled in the art.
Below the tracker bar and mounted to rotate in hearings in the side plates 12, 13 is a shaft 28 on one end of which outside of the side plate 12 is secured a worm wheel 29. lVithin the plate 12 the shaft has fastened thereon a collar 30 formed with a broad flange 31 on its inner side against which bears the bottom of a depression 32 in one end of a take-up roll 33, adapted to turn loosely upon the shaft 28, and having a hook 34 to engage a ring 35 on the end of the music sheet F. The opposite end of the take-up roll 33 is formed with a cylindrical opening or bore 36 concentric with the shaft 28, upon the bottom of which opening is a circular plate 37 formed with an outwardly projecting sleeve 38 surrounding the shaft 28 and rotatable thereon. Slidable over the sleeve 38 is an outer sleeve 39 formed on the inner face of a plate 40 between which plate and the plate 37 is a spring 41 tending to separate said plates. A pin 42 projects at one end through the plate 37 into the takeup roll and at its other end is slidably mounted in a longitudinal opening in the sleeve 39, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. Spaced a short distance from the plate 40 is a collar 43 pinned on the shaft 28 from the inner face of which collar there projects a stud 44 in position to enter any of one or more openings 45 in the outer sleeve 39. Rotatable about the axis of the shaft 28 a short distance from the collar 43 is a disk 46 from the inner face of which projects two or more sleeves 47 through which and through the disk 46 are slidable pins 48, the inner ends of which bear against the outer face of the plate 40 while their outer ends engage cam blocks 49 projecting from the inner face of the side plate 13. As thus construct ed when the parts are in the rewind position shown in Fig. 1 the disk 46 will be turned to such a position that the pins 48 riding upon the inclined faces of the cams 49 will be pushed inwardly, said pins in turn bearing against the plate 40 will slide the outer sleeve 39 upon the inner sleeve 38 against the force of the spring 41 thereby causing a disengagement between the stud 44 and the opening 45, in said outer sleeve, and. permitting free rotation of the take-up roll 33. When the disk 46 is moved in the opposite direction the pins 48 riding down upon the inclined surfaces of the cams 49 permit the pins to be moved in the opposite direction through the force of the spring 41, and thus enable the stud 44 entering one of the openings 45 in the sleeve 39, thereby coupling said sleeve and the take-up roll 33 to the shaft 28 to be rotated bv said shaft when it is desired to wind the music sheet F upon the take-up roll. This clutch constitutes a player clutch closed when the instrument is playing.
On the outer side of the side plate 13 and close to said plate is a circular plate 50 parallel to the disk 46 and connected thereto by lugs 51 shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, passing through slots 52 in the side plate 13. The circular plate or disk 50 is attached to a short shaft 53 in axial alinement with shaft 28, and having a milled headed setting member or thumb button 54 on its outer end by means of which said shaft is turned to set the instrument to play or rewind; a coiled spring 55 is connected at one end to a projection on the circular plate 50, and at its other end to the plate 13, the tendency of which spring is to turn the plate in a direction to maintain connection between the shaft 28 and the take-up roll 33. The periphery of the circular plate 50 has two shoulders 56, 57 formed therein, the former coiiperating with a spring latch 58 to engage and hold said plate when turned into a neutral position that is, which disconnects the take-up roll from the shaft 28. The other shoulder 57 strikes the roller 24 on the lower end of the brake lever 21 when the plate is turned as described, and removes the brake shoe 20 from the brake collar surface 19 heretofore described. The action of removing the brake compresses the spring 23 so that when the plate 50 moves in the opposite direction the spring will automatically move the brake shoe into operative engagement. hen the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 3, both the rewinding clutch and the player clutch are open.
Projecting from the outer side of the circular plate 50 is a pin 59 from which a resilient connection 60in the present instance in the form of a coiled spring-extends upward to the outer end of a rocking lever 61 provided on its opposite end with a valve 62 that closes over a relief opening in the conduit 27 when the take-up roll is locked to the shaft, and the instrument playing, but which is opened to break the suction when the plate 50 is oscillated to throw the rewinding mechanism into operation.
I provide a driving mechanism for the take up roll. For this purpose, on the exterior of the side plate 12 is a shaft 63 mounted in suitable bearings, and has near one end a worm 64 in engagement with the worm wheel 29, and a friction disk 65 near its opposite end, said disk being secured to the shaft 63 by means of a key or in. any other manner which will permit it to slide longitudinally on the shaft and rotate therewith. A hub 66 projects from the friction disk 65 and has a circumferential groove 67 formed therein to receive a shift- 65 when rewinding.

At its lower end the tempo lever 70 is connected by a link 73 with the pivot 74: connecting the block 68 to the swinging arm 69. The construction just described constitutes a variable speed device because when the tempo lever 70 is moved about its axis the link 73 causes the friction disk 65 to move in an axial direction on its shaft 63.
Mounted to rotate in bearings 75 on the rear of the roll holder is a shaft 76 continuously rotated by a suitable motor (not shown) through the driving belt 77 and pulleys 78 on the shaft 76. Fixed to one end of the shaft 76 is a friction wheel. 79 which, when the instrument is playing, is held con tinuously in contact with the friction disk 65 by a spring 80 surrounding the shaft and pressing against a collar fixed thereon. On the opposite end of the shaft 76 is fixed one member 81 of a friction clutch having a slightly tape-red peripheral face to frictionally engage the inner periphery of a cup shaped member 82 of the clutch, said member 82 being attached to a sleeve 83 rotating freely on the shaft 76, said sleeve being also provided with a sprocket wheel 8d and. two flanges 85 spaced apart to form a shifting collar. Between the flanges 85 there projects a shifting yoke on one end of an elbow lever 86 pivoted at 87 to a bracket projecting from the side plate 13, the other end of the elbow lever being connected by a link 88 to an arm 89 mounted on the shaft 53 adjacent the disk 50. When the shaft 53 is rotated by the finger button 5-1 to move the disk 50 the arm 89 through the link 88 rocks the elbow lever 86 to cause the member 82 of the clutch to engage with or disengage the member 81. This movement of the clutch member 82 to the left as in Fig. 4 shifts the clutch member 81 slightly to the left and also slightly shifts shaft 76 longitudinally, thereby compressing spring 80 and Withdrawing disk 79 from disk 65. This disconnects the music drive and avoids any danger of forming any flat faces on the disk A sprocket chain 90 extends from the sprocket wheel 84 over idle pulleys 91 to the sprocket wheel 18 on the musicsheet spool driving shaft 17 At the completion of the rewinding operation on the spool 16 the end of the music sheet F and ring 35 through the impetus imparted to the spool flies around a number of times, and if means were not provided to protect the front of the piano and the piano keys these parts would be struck and marred by the rotating ring. In the present instance this is prevented by a shield 92 pivoted at 93 to a bracket 94. secured to the back plate 14 of the roll holder. The shield 92 projects over the key base and front of the piano keys B and is sufficiently wide to protect these parts from the flying ring 35. On the under side of the shield is a pad 95 to prevent the shield itself, which is made of metal from marring the keys or the piano base should it engage these parts during the raising or lowering of the roll holder.
To operate the player the frame is drawn from beneath the piano and raised into po sition in front thereof as shown in Figs. 2 and 5. In this position the driving belt 77 is tightened and as soon as the motor is started the shaft 76 begins to rotate and continues to rotate uninterruptedly until the motor is stopped. The rotation of the shaft 7 6 through the friction wheel 79 and friction disk 65 turns the shaft 63 and its worm 64:, thereby imparting motion to the worm wheel 29, and its shaft 28, the speed of rotation of said shaft being regulated by the tempo lever 70, the movement of which causes the friction disk 65 to travel from the axis of the friction wheel 79, at which point it is not rotated, to the periphery of said friction wheel where the highest speed is imparted to said disk. Between these two extreme positions any speed may be had. After a music spool sheet has been placed upon the pin 15 and shaft 17, and its ring 35 connected to the take-up roll 33, assuming that the parts are in the neutral position indicated in Fig. 3, to start playing the latch 58 is pushed inward to release the disk 50 which, under the action of the spring 55, makes a partial rotation turning also the disk 16 connected thereto by the lugs 51. This partial rotation of the disk 50 withdraws the shoulder 57 from the brake lever 21 permitting its spring 23 to move the brake 20 into contact with the brake surface 19 on the shaft 17. The same movement also releases the spring 60 from tension so that the lever 61 may rock and close the valve 62 over the opening in the suction conduit 27 thus putting the tracker bar into communication with the suction device. The disk 16 moving with the disk 50 turns sufficiently to allow the pins &8 to move outwardly over the cams -19, thus withdrawing said pins into their sleeves 47, and then sleeve 39 under the force of the spring 11 engages the pin 4 1 on the collar 43, and this locks the take-up roll to the shaft 28, whereupon the take-up roll begins to turn and draws the music sheet F over the tracker bar. The short shaft 53 connected to the disk 50 turns with the disk, and the arm 89 thereon through the link 88 rocks the elbow lever 86 to cause the sleeve 83 rotatable on the shaft 76 and carrying the sprocket wheel 8 1, to move endwise, which movement disconnects the friction clutch 81, 82 and permits the music sheet spool 16 to rotate without impediment otherthan the brake shoe 20, as the music sheet is drawn off. After the piece has been played and the music sheet wound upon the take-up roll, it is rewound upon the spool by first moving the tempo lever 7 0 into the position indicated in Fig. 2, where the friction disk 65 contacting with the friction Wheel 7 9 at its axis is prevented from rotating. The hand then grasps the button 54 on the short shaft and turns the same until the disk 50 has been rotated far enough to bring the shoulder 56 into position beyond the latch 58 which will close the rewinding clutch. If released the latch will engage the same, holding it in the position indicated in Fig. 3, which stops the rewinding. Moving the buttons to rewind the spring 55, removes the brake 20 from the brake surface 19, opens the valve 62 and causes the pins 48 to ride up the cam surfaces 49 and disengage the clutch connecting the take-up roll 33 with the shaft 28. The same movement rocks the arm 89, causing the latter through the link 88 to rock the elbow lever 86 whereby the sleeve 83 is moved axially on the shaft 76 to engage the clutch members 81, 82, and rotate said sleeve. This, of course, turns the sprocket wheel 84 and the latter through the chain 90 and sprocket 18 on the music spool shaft 17 turn said spool and rewinds the music sheet thereon.
lVhat I claim is 1. In a roll holder for self playing musical instruments, a supporting frame, a takeup roll mounted in said frame, means on the frame for sustaining a music sheet spool, a driving shaft extending longitudinally of said take-up roll,driving means for the takeup roll driven from one end of said driving shaft, an independent driving means for the music sheet spool driven from the other end of said driving shaft, and a common shifting device for optionally connecting the take-up roll or the music sheet spool with its individual driving means and disconnecting the driving means from the other.
2. In a roll holder for self playing musical instruments, a supporting frame, a take up roll mounted in said frame, means on the frame for sustaining a music, sheet spool, a driving shaft extending longitudinally of said take-up roll, driving means for the take-up roll driven from one endof said driving shaft, an independent driving means for the music sheet spool driven from the other end of said driving shaft, a brake mechanism for said music sheet spool, and a common shifting device for optionally connecting the take-up roll on the music sheet spool with its individual driving means and disconnecting the driving means from the other and for operating said brake mechanism.
3. In a roll holder for self playing musical instruments, a supporting frame provided with a tracker bar, a suction conduit leading therefrom, a take-up roll mounted in said frame, means on the frame for sustaining a music sheet spool, a driving shaft extending longitudinally with said take-up roll, driving means for the take-up roll driven from one end of said driving shaft, independent driving means for the music sheet spool, a relief valve for the suction conduit, and a common shifting device for optionally connecting the take-up roll or the music sheet spool with its individual driving means and disconnecting the driving means from the other, and for opening and closing said relief valve.
4. In a roll holder for self playingmusical instruments, a supporting frame provided with a tracker bar, a suction conduit leading from said tracker bar, a take-up roll mounted in said frame, means on the frame for sustaining a music sheet spool, a driving shaft extending longitudinally of said takeup roll, driving means for the take-up roll driven from one end of said driving shaft, an independent driving means for the music sheet spool driven. from the other end of said driving shaft, a relief valve for the suction conduit, and a common shifting device for optionally connecting the take-up roll or the music sheet spool with its individual driving means and disconnecting the driving means from the other, opening and closing said relief valve.
5. In a roll holder for self playing musical instruments, a supporting frame, a takeup roll mounted in said frame, sustaining means on the frame for sustaining a music sheet spool, a power driven shaft on the frame, driving means including a changeable feed device operable by said shaft, a clutch between said shaft and the take-up roll, an independent driving device, a clutch for connecting the same with the said sustaining means for the music sheet spool, and a common shifting device connected to said clutches in such manner that when one clutch is thrown into engagement the other is disengaged, and means actuated thereby for disconnecting said changeable feed device to render the same inoperable by said shaft.
6. In a roll holder for self playing musical instruments, a supporting frame, a takeup roll mounted in said frame, means on the frame for sustaining a music sheet spool, a power driven shaft on the frame, driving means between said shaft and the take-up roll, an independent driving means between said shaft and the sustaining means for the music sheet spool, a clutch between the takeup roll and its driving means, a clutch between the main driving shaft and the driving mechanism for the music sheet spool sustaining means, a rotatable shifting device connected to said clutches to alternately engage and disengage said driving shaft with the devices driven thereby, and a brake for the music sheet spool controlled by said shifting device.
7. In a roll holder for self playing musical instruments, a supporting frame, a shaft longitudinally mounted therein, a worm gear wheel secured on one end of said shaft, and a take-up roll loosely mounted on the same shaft adapted to be coupled with said shaft by a clutch device, a driving shaft and a friction wheel thereon, a shaft provided with a worm engaging said worm gear wheel, a friction disk also on the worm shaft in peripheral contact with the face of said friction wheel, said friction disk adapted to slide longitudinally on said shaft and upon the face of the friction wheel to change the speed of the driven parts, and means for sliding said friction disk on its shaft.
8. In a roll holder for self playing musical instruments, a supporting frame, a shaft longitudinally mounted therein, a worm gear wheel secured on one end of said shaft, and a take-up roll loosely mounted on the same shaft and adapted to be coupled thereto by a clutch device, a driving shaft on said frame and a friction wheel on the driving shaft, a worm engaging said worm gear wheel for rotating the same, a friction disk on the worm shaft in peripheral contact with the face of said friction wheel and ada ted to slide longitudinally on the worm sha t and over the face of the friction wheel to change the speed of the driven parts, and a rocking lever for sliding said friction disk on its shaft.
9. In a roll holder for self-playing musical instruments, a supporting frame, a shaft longitudinally mounted therein, a take-up roll loosely mounted on said shaft, a clutch device for coupling said roll to the shaft, a music sheet spool supporting mechanism on said frame, a brake device therefor, a driving'shaft j ournaled on the frame, frictional driving means between said shaft and the shaft carrying the take-up roll, independent driving means between the driving shaft and the music sheet spool support, a clutch between said driving means and the driving shaft, and a common shifting device for alternately connecting the take-up roll and the music sheet spool support to said driving shaft and actuate the brake device.
10. In a roll holder for self playing musical instruments, a frame, a supporting means on said frame for each end of a music sheet spool, one of said supporting means adapted to rotate freely in said frame as the music sheet is unrolled and be positively rotated to rewind said music sheet, a breaking surfacev secured on said rotatable support, a brake shoe, a spring pressing the same against said breaking surface as the music sheet unwinds from the spool in playing,
and means for releasing said brake shoe during the rewind of the music sheet.
11. In a roll holder for self playing musical instruments, a frame containing a takeup roll, and a rotatable support for a music sheet spool, driving mechanism for the takeup roll on one end of said frame and rewinding mechanism for the music sheet spool on the other end of the frame, and a shifting device common to said driving mechanisms for alternately connecting and disconnecting them with the parts driven thereby, as said shifting device is moved to and fro.
12. In a roll holder for self playing musical instruments, a frame, a longitudinal shaft mounted therein, means for rotating said shaft, a take-up roll loosely mounted on said shaft, a clutch device between said shaft and the take-up roll, an oscillating device for actuating said clutch, supporting means on said frame for each end of a music sheet spool, one of said supporting means being freely rotatable in the frame, a brake device adapted to normally bear upon said supporting means during the take up of the music sheet, and means carried by the shift ing device for releasing the brake from said supporting means, and independent driving mechanisms for the take-up roll and the music sheet spool supporting means.
13. In a roll holder for self playing musical instruments, a frame, a shaft therein, a take-up roll, a clutch for connecting said shaft and said take-up roll, a manually operated setting member mounted to rotate on the axis of said shaft, means for supporting a music sheet spool, rewinding mechanism for the music sheet spool, means actuated by said setting member to open said clutch to stop the playing, and means also actuated by said setting member to connect said rewinding mechanism operatively with said music sheet spool support to rewind the music sheet.

In a self playing musical instrument, in combination, a frame, a take up roll rotatably mounted in said frame, driving mechanism for driving said take up roll, a player clutch between said driving mechanism and said take up roll, said driving mechanism including a variable speed device tending to assume a position transmitting no movement to said take up roll, means for controlling said variable speed device to vary the speed of rotation of said take up roll, a manually operated setting member for controlling said clutch, means for supporting a music sheet spool, a rewinding mechanism and means controlled by the position of said setting member for connecting said rewinding mechanism with said music sheet spool supporting means to rewind the same.
15. In a self playing musical instrument,
in combination, a frame, a take up roll rotatably mounted in said frame, driving mechanism for driving said take up roll, means for supporting a music sheet spool, rewinding mechanism, means controlled by the position of said setting member for connecting said rewinding mechanism with said music sheet spool supporting means to rewind the same, a driving shaft disposed longitudinally of said take up roll arranged to drive said driving mechanism from one end and arranged to drive said rewinding mechanism from its other end, and means controlled by said. setting member for disconnecting the driving mechanism from said take up roll, and simultaneously connecting said rewinding mechanism with the music sheet supporting means to rewind the music sheet spool.

In a self playing musical instrument, in combination, a frame, a take up roll rotatably mounted in said frame, a driving shaft, driving mechanism for driving said take up roll from said shaft, a player clutch between said driving mechanism and said take up roll, means for supporting a music sheet spool, rewinding mechanism for rotating said music sheet spool supporting means, a rewinding clutch, a rotatable member adapted to close said player clutch by a rotation in one direction and connected with said rewinding clutch to close said rewinding clutch by a rotation in the other direction.
17. In a self playing musical instrument, in combination, a frame, a take up roll rotatably mounted in said frame, a driving shaft, driving mechanism for driving said take up roll, a player clutch between said driving mechanism and said take up roll, means for supporting a music sheet spool, rewinding mechanism for rotating said music sheet spool supporting means, a rewinding clutch, a rotatable member adapted to close said player clutch by a rotation in one direction and connected with said rewinding clutch to close said rewinding clutch by a rotation in the other direction, and a spring tending to rotate said rotatable member in one direction and a latch for holding said rotatable member against rotation by said spring.

In a self playing musical instrument, in combination, a frame, a take up roll rotatably mounted in said frame, a driving shaft, driving mechanism for driving said take up roll, a player clutch between said driving mechanism and said take up roll, means for supporting a music sheet spool, rewinding mechanism for rotating said music sheet spool supporting means, a rewinding clutch, arotatable member adapted to close said player clutch by a rotation in one direction and connected with said rewinding clutch to close said rewinding clutch by a rotation in the other direction, a tracker bar, a pneumatic conduit connected with said tracker bar and through which air is withdrawn from said tracker bar, and a valve in said conduit actuated by the rotation of said rotatable member to open said conduit to the atmosphere during the rewinding of the music sheet spool.

In a self playing musical instrument, in combination, a frame, a take up roll, a finger button rotatably mounted on the axis of said take up roll, driving mechanism, a player clutch, and a disk connected with said button to be rotated thereby to open or close said player clutch, rewinding mechanism, a music sheet spool support rotatable thereby, a clutch for connecting the same, means actuated by the rotation of said button to open or close said last named clutch, a tracker bar, a pneumatic conduit for Withdrawing air from said tracker bar, a valve at said conduit and means actuated by the rotation of said button for actuating said valve to open said conduit to the atmosphere during the rewinding of the music sheet spool.

In a self playing musical instrument, in combination, a frame, a take up roll mounted in said frame, a drive shaft disposed longitudinally with said take up roll, a driving disk on the end of said shaft, player mechanism including a driven disk engaging said driving disk and movable radially thereof to vary the speed of playing, a player clutch for connecting said player mechanism with said take up roll, means for supporting a music sheet spool, rewinding mechanism, a rewinding clutch for connecting said rewinding mechanism with said music sheet spool support for rewinding the same, and a manually actuated member for controlling both of said clutches and for separating said disks.

In a self playing musical instrument, in combination, a frame, a take up roll rotatably mounted in said frame, a driving shaft disposed longitudinally of said roll, driving mechanism driven from one end of said shaft, a player clutch for connecting said take up roll driving mechanism with said take up roll, a rewinding clutch at the other end of said driven shaft, a rewinding clutch, means for supporting a music sheet spool, means connected with said rewindin clutch for rotating said music sheet spoo supporting means, and a number for opening said rewinding clutch and making a driving connection from said driving shaft through said roll-driving mechanism.

In a self playing musical instrument, a frame, a take up roll mounted therein, a driving shaft mounted longitudinally of said take up roll, a driving disk at one end of said shaft, take-up roll-driving mechanism including a driven disk engaging the face of said driving disk and movable radially thereon to vary the speed of playing, a player clutch connecting said driving mechanism with said take up roll, a sprin tending to hold said driving shaft with said driving disk in engagement with said driven disk, rewinding mechanism, means for supporting a music sheet spool to be driven by said rewinding mechanism, a rewinding clutch for driving the same including a clutch member mounted on said driving shaft, and means for shifting said shaft longitudinally to close said rewinding clutch and move said driving disk away from said driven disk to break the driving connection to said take-up roll.

In a self playing musical instrument, a frame, a take up roll mounted therein, a driving shaft mounted longitudinaly of said take up roll, a driving disk at one end of said shaft, driving mechanism including a driven disk engaging the face of said driving disk and movable radially thereon to vary the speed of playing, a player clutch connecting said driving mechanism with said take up roll, a spring tending to hold said driving shaft with said driving disk in engagement with said driven disk, rewinding mechanism, means for supporting a music sheet spool to be driven bysaid rewinding mechanism, a rewinding clutch for driving the same including a clutch member mounted on said driving shaft, and means for shifting said shaft longitudinally to close said rewinding clutch and move said driving disk away from said driven disk to break the driving connection to said driving mechanism, a tracker bar, a pneumatic conduit for withdrawing air from said tracker bar and an automatically actuated valve controlling said conduit to open the same to the atmosphere when said rewinding mechanism is rotating the music sheet spool.

In aself playing musical instrument, in combination, a frame, a take up roll rotatably mounted in said frame, driving mechanism for driving said take up roll, a player clutch for connecting said driving; mechanism with said take up roll, means for supporting a music sheet spool, rewinding mechanism for rotating said music sheet spool supporting means, a rewinding clutch through which the music sheet spool is driven, a rotatable member adapted to assume a position in which the instrument will play and a second position in which the instrument will rewind, a spring tending to rotate said rotatable member toward one of said positions, a latch for holding said rotatable member in one of said positions against the force of said spring, means connecting said rotatable member with said rewinding clutch to control the same, and means connecting said rotatable member with said player clutch to control the same.
In a roll holder for self playing musical instruments, a frame, a take up roll mounted on said frame, supporting means for the music sheet spool, a brake for resisting the rotation of the music sheet spool, a brake lever carrying said brake, a spring tending to apply said brake, a rotatable member engaging said brake lever and adapted to hold said brake released, a rewinding mechanism and means for connecting said rewinding mechanism operatively to revolve the music sheet spool supporting means, actuated by the rotation of said rotatable member.

In a roll holder for self playing musical instruments, a frame, a take up roll mounted on said frame, supporting means for the music sheet spool, a brake for resisting the rotation of the music sheet spool, a brake lever carrying said brake, a spring tending to apply said brake, a rotatable member engaging said brake lever and adapted to hold said brake released, rewinding mechanism and a clutch for connecting said rewinding mechanism operatively to rotate the music sheet spool supporting means, actuated by the rotation of said rotatable member, and means tending to rotate said rotatable member in a direction to release said brake and actuate said clutch.
27. In a roll holder for self playing musical instruments, a supporting frame, a takeup roll mounted in said frame, means on the frame for sustaining a music sheet spool, a power driven shaft on the frame, driving means between said shaft and the take-up roll, an independent driving means between said shaft and the sustaining means for the music sheet spool, a clutch between the takeup roll and its driving means, a clutch be tween the main driving shaft and the driving mechanism for the music sheet spool sustaining means, and a rotatable shifting device connected to said clutches to alternately engage and disengage said driving shaft with the devices driven thereby.
