INVENTOR WITNESSES ALFRED 0. BAILEY, OF NEW YGRK, IN. "321, ASSIGNOR 'I'C GOLD CAR HEATING (it LIGHT- ENG COMIEANY, NEVJ YORK, N. '55., A COEPfllEtJhTIQN 013 NEW YORK.
ELECTRIC HEATER.
meters My invention relates to electric heaters,
and particularly to the casings wherein such heaters are contained, and it relates to that type of such heaters as is customarily employed in the heating of railw'ay or trolley cars.
My invention has for its object to provide an improved construction ofsuch casingthe interior of which is easily accessible for the purpose of iacilitating'the removal er repair of any of the heating elements therein, and thereby increasing the usefulness of the car to the railroad by diminishing the time when the said car is outof commission by reason of being withdrawn from service for repairs to the heater.
My invention is particularly-useful in the heating of railway passenger or trolley cars, wherein the car seats are provided with removable cushions. lhis is an ordinary type of construction and it includes the-most expensive cars in service, the removal of which from service for the purpose of repairing V the heaters is a serious loss to the railroad.
t ll
es seat and the passenger thereon, 1 provide a In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a plan View, partly broken, of a casing: constructed according to my invention, and Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, showing the car seat.
In carrying my invention into effect the casing, which as a whole, is designated A, is provided with a base or body portion B, and with aremovable cover portion C, the edges of which preferably fit snugly over the body portion B so that the same may be held together. As illustrated these parts are assembled by sliding together. parts of the casing A are preferably perforated as at b, 0, to provide for the emission of heat provided by the heater therein contained, which is illustrated as an electric heater, this being the type of heater usually employed.
in order that the heat furnished by the.
heater within the casing A may not dieagreeably affect the cushion D of the car These Patented July 27, rare.

shield and interpose the same between the cover C and the cushion D. This shield F not only serves the function of shielding the occupants of the carseat E from the direct effects of the heat, but likewise has a very useful function in enabling the cover of the casing to be easily taken off for the purpose "of getting at the heater therein. For this purpose the shield F is preferably connected to the cover C, and a convenient means of accomplishing this is by riveting the same together as at G. Therefore when the car seat D is removed from its position the lifting of the shield Fwill cause the removal oi the removable cover 0 enabling the base or body part B to be inspected and desired repairs made thereon, or the heaters to be removed therefrom if desired.
A convenient way in which the heater may be supported is by means of brackets H, of which two are illustrated. These pass directly under the body part B and have supports upon the seat frame I. I As illustrated, these seat frames are angle irons, and a support is provided by causing the bent ends it of the bracket to rest upon the angle irons,
where they are held in position by bolts J and nuts For the purpose of securing the parts fixedly in position it is quite desirable that the shield F should be held rigidly in place, and accordingly the same is perforated near the sides to receive the bolts J which are held therein by nuts 7' This enables the shield and cover C to be removed without disturbing the base B.
The car seat E is illustrated in the conventional way, as the types to-which references are made are very well known. Frequently these car seats extend crosswise of the car, and often they extend lengthwise of the car. My invention maybe used with either kind.
heaters. The heaters are illustrated as supported upon end blocks K having ledges In 70 upon which are mounted spring clips L L to receive the ends of the heater unit M.
lhe construction of the blocks K are not claimed herein, but form the subject of a separate application, filed by me August 6, 1914:, Serial No. 855,351. Also the construction of spring retaining clips for the heat-.
ing unit M is not claimed herein, but forms in the subject of a separate application filed by F. T. Kitchen, August 28, 191 4, Serial,
heater wherein the leading- '1n wire N is connected to the spring clip L and the current is passed therethrough to a contact band or upon the end of the heater M which is inelectrical connection with the resistance wire m TlllS wire is electrically connected to a core m by which the current-1s returned through clip L to the return wire invention, however, is not concerned withthe type of heater shown, nor with the manner of connectingithe wires, nor with the way of supporting tbeheaters in the casing, but it has reference to the construction of the casing and the provision of simple and convenient means whereby the interior-of the heater may be readily gotten at; It will' therefore beperceived that my invention is not limitedto the precise means illustrated 1 of supporting the casing, nor-to the particular type of heater employedtherein, as any type of heater may be. employed, and various modifications may be made in the construm tion of the casing within the limits of the appended claims.
What is claimed is 1. A casing for an electric heater cornprisv ing base and cover parts,'means for supporting the base, the cover partfladapted to be applied to the base and to be removed therefrom to close and open the casingand a shield connected to the cover part and adapted when removed from position. to
carry the cover with 'it. 2. An electric heater casing comprising separable perforated base and cover parts,
brackets for supporting the base from a car- 7 seat frame, and a shield connected to the cover.
3. Anelectric heater casin comprising a perforated base, a bracket tor supporting same from a car-seat frame, a removable cover and a shield connected to the cover so that the cover is removable with the shield,
and-a connection between the shield and a car-seat frame.
4. Incombination a car-seat frame, a removable car-seat' thereon, and an electric heater casing disposed below said car-seat comprising a base portion supported from manor? the car-seat frameanda removable cover portion, said casing-beingaccessible through r ,w the careseat frame when the car'seat is re-' Theheater herein illustrated is an' electric moved.
In combination a car-seat frame, aremovable car-seat thereon, and an electric heater casing disposed below said car-seat comprising a base portion, a bracket connected'thereto and to the car-seat frame, and
a removable cover po1tion','said casing'being accessible through the car-seat frame when the car-seatisremoved. 6'. In comblnationta car's'eat comprising and the-base, and a shield interposed between the cover and the cushion and a connection between. said-shield and the car-seat.
' 7. 1n combination dear-seat comprising a frame and a removableycnshion, a heater cascover, a bracket connecting-the base to the frame, a shield connected to the cover and inter osed between the sameand the cushion. 8. n comblnationxacareseat having a removable cushion and a heater disposed below said cushion having acasin'g comprising a removable cover and a shield connected to said cover and interposed between the same and the cushion. 9. In combination a car-seat having a removable cushion anda heater disposed beloW said cushion having a casing comprising aremovable cover. and a shield interposed between said'heater and said cushion.
10. In combination a car-seat having a'removable cushion and'a heater horizontally disposed and located beneath said cushion having a separable casing comprising a fixed base and a removable cover, a shield connected to the cover so as to carry the cover with it when it is removed, and interposed between the seat and the heater.
