4IMFRDVEMENT IN GRAINSEPARATGS- The Schedule :starred to in these Letters Patent and vmaking part e! the same.
I, PETER Fmcimrosn, of Hanover, iu the county of York and Starte of Penusylvio nio, have invented o new and useful Improvement in GrannSeparators; and I do hereby declare that the following is a fulLend exact description thereof, reference ybeing forms'a. portion of this specification.
The groin-separators now, n use, which receive the' groin from thrashing-mnand headings from the groin und cha`,'\vhile they conduct the latter into windowing-machines, are all defective in their modes of .,operot-ion, for the reason less of the grain.
My improvement in graineepnrators isintended to remedy theaforeseid defect, and, in practice, I have dxsizered that it does perfectjhcoompli'sh themsired res In the accompcnyngdrswing--- .Figures 1 and 2 nre side views of my improved i grain-separator;
Figure 3, a vieiv ot' the front end of theseme; Figure 4, a longitudinal vertical section; and
Figure 5, a top view of a portion of the front end o f theseparator.- l
-` Similar letters indicate the seme ports in the draw ing.
-The supporting frame-work of my improved groinseperator is composed ofthe inclined side pieces A A', the legs B B and O 0', and the transverse beams D D 'and E E', substantially als represented in the 'draw' ing.
The lowestendof 'ny improved groin-separator --is placedimmediately opposite the 'delivery-spoutl ofa. thinshingmiachiueud in suoh a position that `ell the straw, headings, cho', and grain discharged from snid thrashing-machine will fall u pou thel upwardly-inclined and reciprocating conductor H of the separator.
Transversenotches q q are formed in the exposed face of the inclined conductor H, as shpwnin iig. It.;
The beveled strips b Zr, which me' secured ,to and riso A above the sides of the conductor 1I, pass under the overhanging guiding-slats J J, which me `securedto the inner surfaces ofthe sides A A' of the supporting flume, as shown in tig. 3.'
The end hoord c, iig. 4,?.vhieh is'seoured to the lower end oi the conductor H, rises'to about thc sonic heightahovo the upper sui-toco of the somo es do its sides i l). The conductorH is suspended by and vihmtes upon the three poire of pivotod or jointed pendants,- EZ' The upper ends of scid pendants, nre pivoted or jointed to 'the sides- A A'oi' the frame of the separator, and their lower ends :ne picoted or jointed to the prohad to the accompanying drawing, which jectng ends' of the transverse slots kla? la, which are secured to the under side of the conductor H.
.Lhorcquisite reciprocating motion is the inclined coudutor H from the4 -douhle-crui1ked driving-shaft m, figs. 1 and 2, by means of therodsd don oppositc'sides oi' the separator, which connect the crooks of said shaft with the projectingeudsof the central sloth-i', which is secured to the mider side of seid. conductor: y For the purpose of importing ysharp jerking forward movements to the conductor H the projecting the slot J are also connected to the stiff springs bymenns ofthe rods p p, ns shown iu figs. 1 and 2,
The said jerking movements of the conductor servo the purpose-oi' throwing forwnrd the kernels of groin from one notch q to mother ou the foce thereof, u ntil they rench the opening a; near the upper end of sind orriiotqfthro'ugh *which-the soid kernels of .groin fall into the hopper y of n. winnow11g-machine, W a z, which is properly locu.ted,`mid which is ,driven hy menus of 'a bond connection ot' the pulley N on its pulley N' on the double-crzmked `rnoinslmft in, or hy :my other suitnhle moons.
Notchcd metnllic plates vI l project ut right engins from their longitudinal connection with the foco ol the inclined conductor 1I, and serve the following purposes: `l"irst, the seid notched plotcs,in consequence ofthe smooth rearward movements and the. jerking forward movements imported thereto, steadily curry forward the straw up the inclined. conductor, und shake all the kernels of groin out of tlicfsnine hci'oro it posses the openings: in snidconductor; und
the snid notched plates 'sutiioiont distance nuove the notched surihce of the conductor H to enablethciinovemcnts to produce the desired shaking effect threupom 'llheinolined wire teeth ft, end of thc' conductor }I,nid`thc teeth of the pictos l I in seizing and cnrrying forward the strnw ns it is discharged upon the conductor from the tlwashing-nn4 chine.
The inclined `wire tcctli t t, that rise from the com doctor 1L and `project forward over the opening" through tiresome, octin` conjunction with the notched plates I I in carrying forward the hendiugsnnd broken straw, and preventing the some from tolling througghy tho seid opening n: in the conductor to'thc wiunowingxmachine.
Thciwirs o n, which pass across the Iov-porturo :e iu the conductor, und ore scoured to opposite sides oi' the Some, also oid in'preventing the `hezuiings :unl hrokeiz straw from pzissngtlirough sind :roei-turc to the wlw nowing-inoohine.
The groin-shield. and stuur-dominert is pirated to' imported td` ends of G Grv keep thc stm-w n.
of seid plates' that projcctfrom the lower" My saidimproved grain-separatcr may be 'used with any desired style of thrashing-machine, and may he combined with any desired style or manufacture of winnowing-machines.
, I claim as my inventiony f The combination and arrangement of the rgrainshield and straw-.retainer R -with the reciprocating conductor H, constructed as described, and the shoe W of the winnowingv apparatus, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
In testimouythat the foregoing is a. full and clear specification of -my improvements in grain-separators PETER FISIO'KINGER.
