To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, RICHARD D. REED, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of VVestfield, in I-Iampden county, State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boilers, of which the following is a specification.

Referring to the drawings-Figure 1 is a front View of a boiler embodying my invention, the boiler front being removed and parts being broken away to Show construction. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a portion of a horizontal section on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
I have selected for the illustration of my invention a boiler of the vertical sectional type. Boilers of this type, as iswell known, are made up of a series of sections arranged side by side. As illustrated each section is arched over the fire-box, the part above the fire being formed into a number of communicating tubes for the free circulation of the water. These tubes are seen clearly in Fig. 1 and are indicated by the reference numerals 1 2 3 l. The tubes 3 constitute what may be called the inner wall or side of the main flues f f, the tubes 4. constituting the outer walls of these flues and of the boiler. The joints between the various sections T may be covered with a plastic fireproofing material, such as asbestos, in order to confine the gases.
The inner walls of the flues f f are formed by the tubes 33 which are arranged edge to edge but not in Contact with one another. Along the opposing edges of each pair of these tubes I provide ribs 5-5 extending to near the top of the tubes, these ribs being staggered or offset with relation to one another. A slight accumulation of Soot between these ribs prevents the gases of combustion from passing directlyfrom the combustion chamber into the side flues, at the same time preventing the accumulation of a hurtful amount of soot. Within these flues f f are draft distributers d d extending from the rear of the fiues toward the front to any desired extent; the rear ends of the distributers are located near the up per part of the fiues, the front ends being located at a' lower position causing the axes of the same to lie in a diagonal position. The edges of the distributers are spaced slightly from the sidewalls of the lines as illustrated. f

In order to reach the smoke box the gases must pass below the draft distributers. Some of the gases pass over the edges of the distributers, which as Stated are spaced slightly from the side walls of the fiues, and such parts of the gasesas do not pass over the edges of the distributers are compelled to move toward the front of the boiler around the front ends of the distributers, then rearwardly through the fiues f 7 under the distributers to the smoke box and stack. This control or distribution of the gases of combustion materially increases the efliciency of the boiler by deflecting the greater part of the gases from their natural path direct to the smoke bonnet and causes them to impinge upon the side walls of the fines during their travel through the fiues first toward the front and then toward the rear of the boiler; at the same time I do not reduce the full area of the flues to any appreciable extent. These distributers may be rotatably mounted and equipped with an operating handle 6' so that they can be turned to a vertical position to provide a direct draft when it is desired.
As I have above stated I have illustrated and described my invention as it is adapted for use in a vertical sectional boiler, but I am aware that by alteration and modifica tion the invention can be adapted for use withother types of boilers and I desire to include herein and in the accompanying claims any modifications or alterations which do not depart from the spirit of the lnventlon.
I claim:
1. In a horizontal boiler, the combination with a longitudinally extending main flue reaching from front to rear of the boiler, and a smoke box arranged at the rear of the boiler in communication with said main flue, of means located within said main flue and extending from the rear end thereof continuously to near the front end thereof
