Each of the pawls 32 and 33 is held in operative position by means oi. a spring 50 as best shown in Fig. 7 and in order to hold one of said pawls inactive while the other is in operation, each ot said pawls is provided with a latch 51 which is shown terminait ing in a pin 52 movable along a slot hated generally at B in the longer arm. of the operating lever, the slot B comprising a longer branch 53 and a shorter branch 54. ltv will be understood by reference to Figi l that when either one of the pawls 32 is to he thrown out of operation, the pawl 32 is pressed downwardly until the pin 52 travels alongthe longer branch 53 of the slot enters the shorter branch 54. lhen left in this position, the pawl is held out oi operative relation to the ratchet or notched wheel 3l while the othervpawl remains in operation. Betents 55 and 5G are arranged at opposite sides of the Wheel 31 and each of s d pawls is mounted on an' operatingv shaft 57 shown in Fig. 10, either o'said pawls 55 being adapted to be thrown into or out of' engagement with the notches or teeth of the wheel 3l according to the direction in which the webI is moving, by means a. suitable operating` handle or lever 58 at that end oit the shaft 57 which lies between the bracket 2l and the door l.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying; draw` ings, it will now be understood that the indicating web 10 which is exible, is wound .1, A upon the two drums ll and l2 and that the that intermittent motion is imparted to one of said drums by the pawl and ratchet elements also described hereinabove. lt will mther be understood that the web may he propelled in either direction by means ot' the operating lever contained within the casing', said lever being actuated in one direction by the pull cord or element 48 and being reu tracted or moved in the opposite direction by' the action of the spring 39. The door il gives access to the interior of the casing so as to admit et' the removal and replacement of the indicating web and the upper roller ll and also for the purpose of adjustn ing the reversing means consisting,f of the pawls 32 and 33 and the detents 55 and 56. rtherefore, a pull on the cord 48 will propel the indicating web in either direction according to the adjustment of said pawls and deteuts. The progressively increasing or decreasing distances between the street or station designations on the flexible web or ribbon l() insures the proper registration of the reading matter with and behind the observation panel 3 irrespective of the numkber ol windings of said web on either of lill ^ forth from either in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the s irit or sacrificing any of the advantages o the invention.
