To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LAwRnNon BoNELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Ma chines, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to bobbins, such as are used in sewing machines, and especially in shoe stitching machines.

The object of my invention is the producion of a bobbin and case therefor which will be so constructed as to admit of the viewing of the thread contained on the bobbin without the necessity of removing the bobbin from its case.

A further object is the production of a bobbin and case which will be so marked or graduated as to apprise the operator of the machine of the quantity of thread contained on the bobbin, and thus avoid the objectionable experience of running out of thread before the work at hand has been completed.

Other objects will appear hereinafter.

The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which,

The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawing comprises a bobbin and case which is designed to accommodate the stitching thread 7. The bobbin case 8 is in general construction of conven tional design, being cylindrical in form and open at one side so as to permit of the insertion of the bobbin 9 thereinto. Said bobbin is also in general construction of conventional design, being adapted to loosely or rotatably rest in the case 8 when the device is in use. Said bobbin is, however, provided at one side with a radially extending slot or opening 10 and the corresponding side of the bobbin case is provided with a slot 11 which is adapted for registration Specification of Letters Patent.

with the slot 10, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.

With this arrangement, it will be seen that, the thread contained upon the bobbin may be viewed through the slots 10 and 11, when the latter are in registration, without the necessity of removing the bobbin from the case as is necessary at the present time when the operator desires to examine the bobbin in order to ascertain whether or not there is any thread contained thereon.

Provided upon the outer side of the bobbinadjacent the slot 10 thereof are graduations, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 4:, which are indicative of certain amounts of thread contained on the bobbin. For instance, the innermost graduation which is designated by the reference character 2, as shown, is so positioned that when the thread upon the bobbin is in registration therewith, as shown in Fig. 2 it will serve to apprise the operator that the bobbin contains only enough thread for two pairs of shoes. Likewise the other graduations which are spaced along the opposite edges of the slot 10 serve to indicate amounts of thread sufiicient for five, six and seven shoes respectively, as will be readily understood. With this arrangement then, it will be seen that the operator will at all times be apprised of the quantity of thread upon the bobbin in terms of the work upon which the thread is used, and thus avoid the objectionable experience of the thread running out before the work at hand is completed.

The changing of bobbins in order to supply more thread when the thread has run out of the bobbin in use, necessitates a break in the work, and generally results in the production of a piece of work which is not up to standard and therefore objectionable.

With the present construction this, of

course, will be overcome since if indications upon the bobbin show that there is not enough thread to completely finish the work at hand, as for instance a shoe or a pair of shoes, the bobbin will be removed and a fresh one arranged in its place. The changing of bobbins in the middle of a job, that is before the work is completed, especially in shoe stitching, necessitates a considerable waste of time which is not experienced where a bobbin is changed before the work is started, and it is contended that, with the present construction, this waste of time will be obviated.
