Description

M.' H; PLATA. sALlvA HECTOR. APPLICATION man Nov. 30. 1914.
Patented July 20, v1915.
Inventor:
m. am m Pu@ mf To all vzclwln it may Concern vented a new and useful Saliva-Ejector, of
which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to ejectors used f'specially for the removal of saliva from the mouth of a patient during dental operations'and the object of the invention is to provide a device of this character so cheap to manufacture that when once used it may be discarded and a new one used on the neXt patient.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of this kind which can be used with the minimum of discomfort.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which-- Figure 1, is a side view of 'a saliva ejector constructed in accordance with my invention with a portion of the connecting rubber tube attached; Fig. 2 is atop plan view of the ejector; Fig. 3, is a sectional view, on an enlarged scale, on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4, is a side view of the mouth-en aging end of the ejector, showing a modifie form of construction: and Fig. 5, is a sectional view, on a slightly enlarged scale, on the line 5 5 of Fig. 4.
In the drawing similar numerals of reference refer to the same parts in each of the views.
In practice I provide a saliva ejector preferably made of prepared paper, or similar material, so that it can be manufactured cheaply, and when once used can be thrown away so that a new one will be supplied for the next patient. i l
As shown in the drawing, the ejector consists of a tube 6, formed from prepared paper spirally wound, the separate spirals being indicated by 7. The tube is bent at 8,
v to form a U-shaped portion whereby a part 9, is provided for insertion in a patients mouth. In practice it is desirable to partially close the mouth-engaging end, for reasons hereinafter explained, and to provide an enlarged portion. or end, with side ports. This Iaccomplish b v providing a bulb 10, which ispreferably lined in the end of the tube 6; and this-bulb is provided with a side port 11, on each side. Thelong end 1Q. of the ejector may be mounted in a rubber Specication ofLetters Patent.

' Applicatonvled November 30, 1914. Serial No. 874,727. ,I
tube' 13, the end of which may be placedin the water running through a basin.
In operation, when dental work is to be done, the end 9, of the ejector is inserted in the patients mouth, and the free end of the rubber tube 13, is placed in the running water. As saliva is formed in the mouth of the patient, the suction caused in the ejector by the running water will cause the saliva to enter, and pass through the ejector to'be dis-4 charged without inconvenience to the patient or dentist. 'y
As the running water will vcause considerable suction through the ejector, if the end entering the vmouth were left open the light inner lining of the mouth would likely be drawn into the end of the tube thereby stopping the passageway through the same. To prevent this the bulb 10, is provided which is of sufficient size to slightly expand the surrounding portions, and' a plurality of ports are provided so that under no circumstances will all be stopped up by the lining,
and the ejector will thus always be-kept in an operative condition.
It is common to make tubes out of paper either spirally wound, or with edges fixed together; but in this application I show one of these tubes bent into a particular shape for a.. particular purpose. Further, while it is not so difficult to make a tube of paper, it is difficult to make a tube with an enlarged,
closed end. By making a bulb with side ports, and fixing the same in the end of the paper tube the ploblem of manufacturing is greatly simpliedand a very efficient ejector is provided.
As the part 9, must enter the mouth of the patient, it is desirable owing to its fragile nature that it separate the lips, and especially the teeth as little as possible. In some cases the patient may nearly close the teeth and the ejector might be permanently injured. Then, too, as the teeth present a substantially fiat surface. by providing the ejector with a corresponding fiat surface the ejector will rest in the mouth of the patient in a more firm manner. To provide for this. I flatten the tube 6, at 14. whereby a fiat bottom 15, and a flat top 16, is provided. This widens the channel 17, through the tube 6, but does not reduce the area of the same, as will be clear.
,'1l, and l2', are the same as in Figs. l, 2, and; but the tube at 14, is flattened on the bottom only, as shown at 15.. This will insure the ejector resting rmly on the teeth of the patient, and may be used instead of the construction shown in Figs. l, 2, and 3.
In manufacture, the tube 3, can be formed out of prepared paper, or other suitable material, in a manner Well known, and may bebent, or formed in to the desired shape. The bulb l0, may be previously formed, or formed at the time it is inserted, or fixed in the end of the tube 6.
The entire construction is such that it Will be cheap to manufacture; Will be effective in use; and Will be perfectlj7 sanitary as a new ejector Will be used for each patient.
I claim;
l. A saliva ejector formed ,of prepared paper U-shaped in form, one end of s aid ejector carrying a closed end With a port in the side thereof.
2. A saliva ejector formed of prepared paper spirally Wound and 'Ll-shaped in form,
one end .of said ejector carrying an enlarged and closed end with a plurality of ports in the side thereof.
3. A saliva ejector comprising a tube formed from paper U-shaped inform, and a bulb closing` one end thereof, said bulb being provided with a plurality of perforations which communicate with the interior of said tube.
4;. A saliva ejector having a U-sliaped portion made of paper With the inner in lernediate portion fiat, for the purpose set ort i.
5. A saliva ejector comprising a tube formed from prepared paper U-sliaped in form with the intermediateportionflattened, and a bulb fixed in one end of said tube, said bulb being piovided With a plurality of perforations which communicatewith the interior of the tube, for 'the purpose set forth.
