I contemplate the provision of means whereby the strip may be severed by strip pressure. This may be accomplished in many Ways,'as, for eXample,by strip pressureupon the moistener or upon a part other than the moistener. It isapparent that strip pressuremay be employed tosever the strip either inadvance of or in the rear of the moistening point. Inthe several'forms' of my invention herein chosen for illustration,the strip is represented as severed" by strip pressure in the rear of the moistening point.
Referring first tothe form of myinven tion disclosed in Figs.,1 and 2, the strip support is represented at 1, it being :ofany suitable construction and being preferably a case wherein a roll of paper may be suit ably supported and tensioned. Herein it is represented as mounted upon a base 2. Suitably secured to the base is a reservoir 3 having mounted therein for movement. toward and from the service pathof the strip a moistener {L of any suitable construction. Herein the moistener is represented as a wicking having ends depending into the tank or reservoir. The moistener is sup ported by spring 5 which normally projects thesame toward the service path of the strip, but upon the application of strip pressure to the moistener, the spring 5 yields and the moistener is moved downwardly from the normal service'path of the strip. Any suitable means may be employed to sever the strip by strip pressure induced movement of the moistener. Herein I have represented the severing blade 6 guided in suitable ways 7 extending from the tank or reservoir 3. The blade 6- may be of any suitable construction, and either serrated, as shown in Fig. 2, or it maybe formed as an invertedV or W, so that the point or point s there of may readily penetrate the strip to sever. the same. While the blade may be operated in any suitable manner upon movement of the moistener, herein 1 have represented levers 8 pivoted at 9 upon the reservoir and jointed at 10 to the arm 11 of the blade and at 12. to arms 13 suitably pivoted to the moistener at 14. The walls of the moistener, are suitably slotted to permit the described movement of the moistener. Preferably the strip should be tensioned so that it may be more readily severed when the blade is projected. Herein, for the purpose, I have represented rolls 15 and 16 suitably supported from the Any suitable means other than the mois' tener may be utilized to receive strip pres sure and transmit the same to the severing blade. In Figs. 3 and A, I have represented a bar 18 mounted in a casing 19 and suitably projected toward the service path of the strip by a spring 20. Said bar is operatively connected in any suitable manner with the severing blade 21, as by means of levers 22 represented as pivoted at 23 upon the reservoir.
In Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, I have represent ed the blade as movable. It is apparent, however, that the same may be fixed and that the strip may be moved by strip pressure into severing relation thereto. Such a construction is represented in Figs. 5 to 8 inclusive.
In Figs. 5 and 6 is represented a fixed blade, into severing relation with which the strip is moved by strip pressure applied to the moistener, While in Figs. 7 and 8 the strip is similarly moved by strip pressure applied to a part other than the moistener. In said Figs. 5 and 6, the fixed blade 24: is suitably supported upon members 25 extending from the tank or reservoir. The moistener 26 is preferably supported by a spring 27 in the manner illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. Vertically beneath the blade 2% is a suitably guided plunger 28 preferably slotted at its upper end and pivotally connected at 29 to levers 30 pivoted at 31 upon the tank or reservoir and jointed at 32 to arms 33 pivotally connected at 34 to the moistener. It will be apparent, when the moistener is moved downwardly by strip pressure, that the plunger will be projected to carry the strip into severing relation with the fixed blade 24;.
In the construction shown in Figs. 7 and 8, the bar 35 is adapted to be depressed against the springs 36 by strip pressure, and thereby through the levers 37 to project the plunger 38 carrying with it the strip against the fixed blade 39 to sever the same.
The severing blade may be positioned in stri su ort amoistenin device stri severing means positioned transverselyv of the strip, and means for operating said severing means through the instrumentality of said moistening device.
2. A strip serving device comprising a strip support, a yieldingly mounted moistener, strip severing means, and connections between the severing means and the moistener to project the severing means by yielding movement of said moistener, thereby to sever the strip.
3. A strip serving device comprising a strip support, a spring supported moistener, a movable severing blade arranged transversely of the strip, and connections intermediate the blade and moistener to operate the former.
4L. A strip serving device comprising a strip support, a moistener, and movable strip severing means positioned transversely of the strip and movable by strip pressure applied to the moistener to sever the strip.
5. A strip serving device comprising a strip support, a moistener, movable strip severing means positioned transversely of the strip, said strip severing means being moved by strip moistening deflection into engagement with the strip, thereby positively to sever the same.
6. A strip serving device comprising a strip support, a strip moistening device in front thereof and against which the strip is adapted to be bodily deflected for moistening, movable strip severing means, and means actuated by said deflecting movement of the strip against the moistener, to move the severing means into engagement with and thereby positively to sever the strip.
7. A strip serving device comprismg a 100 strip support, a strip moistening device positioned in the service path thereof and against which the strip is adapted to be bodily deflected for moistening, a movably mounted strip severing blade, and lever con- 105 nections between the moistener and the blade, thereby to sever the strip upon moistener movement.
8. A strip serving device comprising a strip support, a strip moistening device in 110 the service path thereof and against which the strip is adapted to be bodily deflected for moistening, strip severing means positioned transversely of but normally removed from contact with the strip, and actuating connec 1 5 tions between the moistener and said means to project the latter into severing relation with the strip.
9. A strip serving device comprising a strip support, movable means positioned in 20 the service path of the strip and against which the strip is adapted to be bodily deflected in the strip moistening movement, strip severing means arranged transversely of the strip, but normally spaced therefrom, 125
and actuating connections between said movable means and strip severing means to cause said strip severance.
10. A strip serving device comprising a strip support, a spring supported strip mois- 130 tening device arranged in the service path of the strip, a severing blade between the strip support and the moistener and movably mounted to be projected into severing relation to the strip, and actuating connections betWeen said moistener and said blade, thereby to project the blade upon yielding movement of the moistener.
11. A strip serving device comprising a strip support, a bodily movable moistening device, strip severing means and connections for causing operation of said strip severing means by bodily movement of said moistening device.
12. A strip serving device comprising a strip support, a movable moistening device, movable strip severing means, and connectin a direction normal to theservice path of the strip, thereby to severthe strip.
