WARREN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the town of Oak Park, in the county'of Cook and State of. Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electrotype Forms and Plates; and 'I'do hereby declare that the following is a full,

, Heretofore the aliningof printing plates in a printingform to secure the proper register thereof a im color process work, h'as necessitated a number of trial mpressions being made, and a number of adjustments are usually necessary before the'plates are secured in proper register. Such trial adjustments are necessary for the reason that the electrotype or printingplate is usually merely clamped on eachof its four sides by means of adjustable clamps, whichallow the plates to be properly manipulated into a registering position, but do not serve to aid the operator in rapidly efiectin'g such adjustment. p
This invention relates to a form for electrotype whereby an accurate centering device is formed as an integral portion of the printing plate, and is thus read ly adaptable to use with the quick adjusting, centering clamping devices forming the subject matter of the co-pending application of myself and Anthony F. .Bals, for L printers catch or registering means, filed Mar. 21, 1913, Serial No. 7 55,876.
It is an object of this invention to pro-Q vide a plate form having suitably shaped blocks therein to afiord cooperative means on the plates formed therefrom for quickly centering the same on a printing base equipped with centering clamps.
It is also an object of this invention to form an electrotype or other printing plate with integral means for cotiperating with a centering device in aprinting form.
It is also an object of this invention to afford a printing plate having an accurately formed recess therein adapted to c o-act with a complcmentally shaped centering device It is finally an object of thisiinvention to construct a simple, compact and durable device whereby the formed plates-may be made as usual without necessitating any changes in the process of formation thereof.
The invention (in a preferred form) is hereinafter described and more fully pointed out and] defined in the'appended claims.
In the drawings; Figure 1 is a top plan view of a type form equipped with a device embodying theprinciples of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of one of the type form sections embodying my invention. Fig 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary .plan view of one end of the formed electrotype showing the same provided with centering means. Fig. 5- is a top plan view of the electrotype plate mounted on theprinting base, showing the operation of the centering elements. Fig. 6 is a partial longitudinal transverse central section taken through the electrotype plate. Fig. 7 is atop plan view of one of the blocks of the'printing base, provided with an adjustable centering and clamping means.
As shown in the drawings: 1, indicates the outside rack or frame of a printing form, with the type 2, set up therein and maintained in the usual proper spaced relation by means of the sectional blocks 3, which are inclosed longitudinally and trans versely at the sides and ends of the rack by means of the bars 4. The assembled sections comprising the form are maintained in tight relation with one another and with in the rack l, by means of the usual quoins 5. Adjacent the transverse end bars 4, of the printing form are the recessed sections 6, locked up on either side thereof by means of the sections 7. As shown in Figs. 1, 2,
and 3, said section 6, is provided in this case with a V shaped recess 8, in the upper inclined surface 9, thereof, which, when the electrotype plate 10, is formed, will exist as the similarly shaped notch 11.
Fig. 'Z shows one of the blocks 12, provided with the clamping member 13, which has on the clamping face thereof the integral projecting V shaped centering element 14, said block, as is usual, forming a detachable portion of the printing base 15.
The operation is as follows: In the usual process of making electrotypes, the form, as
. shown in Fig. 1, is set up, and a wax 1mpressifon under pressure made thereof. The wax iinpr'e'ssion is then coated with plumbago, andsubmerged in the electrolytic solution of copper sulfate, together with a copper plate. The plumbago coated surface of the wax mold is connected to the positive terminal of a source of E. M. F. and the negative terminal thereof is connected 1 to the aforesaid copper plate submerged in the solution. A thin coating of copper is thereby electrolytically deposited upon the plumbago coated surface of the wax mold, and, when the same is of sufficient thickness to permit handling, it is backed up with molten lead or type metal to approximately a thickness of one sixth of an inch, and the printing plate is complete. The back surface and edges of the plate, as well as the V shaped notches, which wereintegrally cast therein, arethen accurately machined and surfaced. 7 When the electrotype is used for printing it isplaced upon the printing base 15, and suitably. secured thereon at each of its sides by means of the adjustable clamping blocks 12' and 16, of which the blocks 12, are provided with the, clamping members 13, having the complementally shaped projecting portions 14, adapted to engage in the notches 11 in the electroplate to center the same. The usual wooden backing member to which the electrotype is secured is dispensed with in this manner of handling the electrotype for printing purposes. Thus it is readily seen that, for instance in three color work, the electrotype plates having been provided with similarly disposed V notches in the ends thereof, when said plates are mounted upon the printing base 15, at
