To all whom it may concern.
. Be it known that 1, Johns E. TUoKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Delivery Mechanisms for Printing-Presses, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an'attachment for printing presses adapted to provide a mech anism to remove the paper sheets from the press after the printing'operation and to convey such sheets to a suitable support, which mechanism is known as the delivery mechanism. i
The objects of my invention are to generally improve in construction the various parts of a delivery mechanism of this class and to render such a mechanism more effective in operation. r 1

Referring to the drawings, a sliding delivery carriage is shown comprising side bars 1, having fixed thereto slide blocks 2, i
and cross-rods 3 and 4: joining the side bars. Fixed to the cross-rods is a bracket 5, through holes in which passes freely a rocking shaft 6, supported at its ends by brackets 7 and 8 which are fixed to the rod 4.,
Rigidly mounted on the shaft 6 are two delivery sheet grippers of which one is shown in Fig. 5. These grippers are secured to the shaft by brackets 9, 10, and setscrews 11. These brackets carry screws 12 and 13, which form adjustable stops adapted to contact at A with the bracket 5 to limit the rocking movement of the grippers. The
. grippers have stems 14am 15 which are ad justably clamped inthe split brackets 9 and 10, by means ofv clamping screws 18. The stems at one end are threaded intobarrells 16 and 17 a'ndattheir other tends areen larged and knurled to permit the stems to be turned and the grippers thereby length ened or shortened, lock'nuts 19 and 20 being provided on the stems to lock the stems and barrels together. i j a Fixed to each of the barrels 'is a, thin blade of steel 21 which forms. thelower jaw of the gripper. The body of the gripper at its forward end is recessed or cut away at 22. to accommodate upper jaw members 23 and 24, which are pivoted at B in slots formed in the body of the grippers and have a bearing on springs 25, which tend to close the upper jaws against the lower ones. Hinged to these membersat C are blocks 26 and 27 to which are secured thin steel blades 26 and 27 forming the gripping means of the upper jaws. Bearing against the blades with merely sufficient force to normally keep the hinges closed and; \the blades alined with the supporting members are springs 28. The members 23- and 21are provided with holes in which loosely fit the ends of a cross-bar 29, thus joining the two upper j aws. The opposing jaws 21 and 26 and 21 and 27 respectively, areprovided with the flat sheet stop-gage pins 30, and corresponding holes for the pins to enter when the jaws are closed. These stop-pins serve as gages to position. the sheet of paper correctly on the platen, the edge of the sheet being carried against the same as the depositing means take the sheet down across the platen.
Between the delivery grippers and held pivotally on the shaft 6 between collars is a triple-armed rocking member, forming a jaw controller and having at the outer end of one of its arms at D a slot which loosely straddles the cross-bar 29, connecting the jaws for the purpose of enabling the movement of the controller to open the jaws. At the end of the other arm the rocking controller member has a flattened face at E,
which is adapted to contact with'the rod 4 when the shaft 6 is rockedfor the purpose of moving the controller in. suchqa wayas to open the jaws. The controller has, a stiifiy moving action on the shaft 6, whereby it mav move with,as well as independently of these stops is illustrated in detail in Figs.
6 and 3. It is supported by brackets 31 and set screws 32 on the shaft 6. The brackets are slotted to receive the bars 33 of the stops,
which bars are threaded at one end and supplied with thumb nuts 34 and held in fixed position by set screws 35. Pins 36 engage grooves in nuts 34 which extend into the brackets and hold the nuts in place. Hinged to the other ends of bars 33 are fingers 37 to which are secured thin steel blades, 38, while opposing blades 39 are fixed to the under side of the finger. These blades of each stop are held yieldingly apart by a spring 40 fixed to bar 33, and bearing on the rear end of the pivoted blade 38.
' On the blades 39 are flat pins 41 forming stops for the sheet of paper and adapted to enter corresponding holes in the opposing blades. These stop gage members have no gripping action, the upper blades 38 being made movable merely to yield to the type bed when the latter is impressed on the platen.

" 3 and 4, to which is pivoted at F a right angled arm 49, Figs. 1, 3 and 4, which carriesa slide block 50, movable in rail 42. To thisarm is adjustably connected by nuts G a sliding gripper carriage guiding bar 51 serving to prevent any strain or twisting action on the carriage, which bar is provided with a stop pin 52 which is adapted to come in contact with a part of the press in the forward movement of the carriage and sliding bar to stop the carriage at the proper position in relation to the platen of the press.
Pivoted to the arm 49 at H, preferably by a universal oint is a lug 53 which is adjustably connected by nuts I to the end of a carriage driving rod 54, the other end of which is connected to a lug 55, pivoted to a lever 56. This lever is pivotally connected at J to a forked bracket 57 which is secured to the'frameof the press at K. Pivoted to the lever 56 is a link 58 which is pivotedto a driving crank 59. This crank is rigidly fixed to a stud L on the main gear wheel 60 of the press, whereby the drive rod 51, is reciprocated so as to slide the carriage back and forth in its rails.
' Pivoted to the usual, platen lock M of the press which is operated by the cam wheel N of'the press, Fig.1, is a lug 61 midway between the side frames of the press. Secured at one end to the lug 61 is a rod 62, Fig. 2, the other end of which is slightly bent and passes through and projects slightly beyond the hole a in the bar 63, Fig. 2. This rod is adapted to be longitudinally projected by the movement of the platen-lock into the path of the three armed jaw controller 64 of the gripper carriage in order by the contact therewith to open the jaws to permitthe entrance of a sheet of paper.
Releasing prongs 65 are mounted below the'path of the carriage for the purpose of removing the sheets from the grippers to permit them to fall on the receiving'board 66.
A crank 67 is secured to the shaft 6, Figs. 1 and 3, having a bent arm at the upper part for the purpose of clearing another part of the machine in its movement and to this crank is secured to a stud and roller 68 movable in a cam-shaped raceway 69 which is secured to the bracket 44 and a brace 70 the latter being secured to the track 42.
The operation of the delivery mechanism is as follows :As the sheet depositing grippers of the press are carrying the sheet of paper down across the platen the delivery carriage is approaching the lower edge of the platen, and after it reaches the platen it remains there during the impression of the type form on the platen. After the impression has been made, the delivery'grippers dwell in place at the bottom edge of the platen long enough for the bar D to move back on its return movement out of their way, and at the same time the cam N of the press through the medium of the platen lock M and the lug 61, removes rod 62 from against the three armed jaw controller member by which the springs 25 cause the jaws 26 and 27 to bear against the opposite jaws 21, thus. gripping the paper sheet at its edge. The delivery carriage is then carried back by its operating drive rod 54 and the grippersare guided in their course by the roller 68 moving in the raceway 69 which controls the rocking shaft 6 on which the grippers are carried and as the delivery grippers are turned downward .bv the rocking movement of the shaft 6 effected by the form of the raceway 69, the fiattenedportion E onthe jaw controller 64 as said controller is rocked by the shaft 6 will come in contact with the shaft .4 of the carriage which has the effect through the medium of the jaw-connecting cross-bar 29 of separating the upper iaw members 26 and 27 from the lower jaws so as to .open the delivery grippersand release the sheet of paper. a At this time the front edge of the released sheet comes in contact with the fixed prongs 65 which push it out of the grippers and allow it to fall on the receiving board 66. The hinge of the upper jawsat C permits the jaws to be pushed toward the opposite jaws seam-2o "21 when the bed of the press reaches the platen as there is not room enough for them to remain apart to their full extent. Springs 28 restore the blades and 27 and their connected partsto straight position but as the hinge 'C will bend only one way the springs 25 are not prevented from exerting pressure to close the upper jaws against the lower ones.
The pause or dwell 'of the delivery carriage at the platen during the impression is obtained by the manner in which the three centers J, 0 and P of the pivotal connections "of the operating mechanism are aimed with the center at and as the center or pivot P passes above such a line or above the line of the sliding bar '5l,.the lug 53 will swing forward on center H to compensate for any further movement of the lever 5'6. By these means the delivery carriage is caused to dwell at the platen until the form has been impressed on the platen which is necessary to the proper delivery of the sheet.
This attachment is adapted to be used in connection with the mechanism of an ordinary oscillating bed printing press, and the same may be secured to the frame of the press without mutilating or in any other way changing the construction of such frame.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a paper-sheet delivery mechanism, delivery means movable to and from the platen, said delivery means having stop pins and means to cause the delivery means to approach the platen as a sheet is being carried across the platen, and means for causing said delivery means to dwell at said platen as the sheet is deposited thereon and an impression made whereby the stop pins form head-gages for the sheet of paper, substantially as described.
2. In combination with paper-sheet delivery means, for printing presses, a platen, delivery means movable toward and from the platen in a line at right angles to the sheet edge to be engaged, means to cause the delivery means to approach the platen as a sheet is being deposited thereon, said delivery means having gripping jaws in pairs laterally spaced apart, said jaws being provided with-stop pins which serve as head gages against which the forward edge of the sheet is received and means to open and close said delivery grippers and to retract the same from the platen, substantially as described.
3. In a paper-sheet delivery mechanism, a delivery gripper carriage, rails in which said carriage moves, gripper jaws carried by said carriage, a crank controlling the inclination of the jaws, a raceway engaged by said crank, a press platen, means to cause the carriage to dwell at the platen, means her contacts in themovement of the carriage for opening said jaws, and means for operating the jaw opening means, substantially as described.
:5. In a paper-sheet delivery mechanism, a delivery carriage movable to and from a platen, rails in which such carriage moves and oscillating sheet gripper mounted on said carriage, a depending baron which said gripper is hung, a curved track in which such bar is moved, whereby the gripperis caused to follow in inclination and direction of movement the said traveling hanger bar, substantially as described.

a sliding delivery gripper carriage movable to and from a platen, sheet gripping jaws mounted on saidparriage, a drive rod connected to the carriage, driving means, a series of links connecting said rod and driving means and arranged to present an alinement of the centers of the links and the connection therewith of the driving rod during the delivery movement, and an articulated joint connection between the driving rod and the carriage, substantially as and for the purpose described.
7. In a paper-sheet delivery mechanism, a delivery gripper having a pivoted jaw, a spring bearing against said jaw at one side of said pivot and tending to close the jaw, said jaw being divided into two parts hinged together on the other side of the pivot, and a spring to hold the hinged parts alined, substantially as described.
8. In a paper sheet delivery mechanism, a movable carriage, a shaft in said carriage, a paper sheet stop having jaws between which the sheet is gripped, a bracket adjustable along said shaft, and means on said bracket engaged by said stop permitting eX- tension of the stop thereon, substantially as described.
9. In a paper sheet delivery mechanism, a movable carriage, a rock shaft in said carriage, a paper sheet gripper secured on said rock shaft, said gripper having jaws between which the paper sheet is gripped and means mounted on and operable by the rock shaft to open the jaws, substantially as described.
10. In a paper sheet delivery mechanism,
a movable carriage, a part of said carriage, a rock shaft in said carriage, paper sheet gripper members rigidly secured on said rock shaft and having jaws between which the paper sheet is gripped, a jaw controller member mounted on the rock shaft and engaging the gripper and having a portion adapted to abutagainst the said part of the carriage to operate the jaws, substantially as described.
11. In a paper sheet delivery mechanism a movable carriage, a rock shaft in said carriage, a paper sheet gripper rigidly secured on said shaft having jaws between which the paper sheet is gripped, an arm on said shaft, a curved raceway, a member on said arm engaging the raceway, a controller member on said rock shaft engaging the gripper, a part of the carriage, and a stop member on said controller member adapted to abut against the said part of the carriage to operate the jaws of the gripper to release the sheet, substantially as described.
12. In a paper sheet delivery mechanism, a movable carriage, a rock shaft in said carriage, paper sheet grippers on said shaft each having a fixed jaw and a movable jaw, a jaw controller member on said rock shaft, a bar engaging and joining the movable jaws of the grippers, said controller engaging the bar, a stop member on said controller, a part of the carriage, said stop member adapted to abut against the part to Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
