VENTILATING APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 12, 1912. Serial No. 690,326.

1 Be it known that I, JAMES L. WATERBURY, of Minneapolis, Hennepin county, Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ventilating Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to ventilating apparatus adapted particularly for school buildings and similar structures heated by stoves, and the object of the invention is to simplify and improve the heating and ventilat ing apparatus to the end that the room where the heater is located may be more economically heated and more thoroughly ventilated.
A further object is to provide a ventilating apparatus which to a large degree will prevent the accumulation of soot in the smoke flue.
Other objects of the invention will appear from the following detailed description.
The invention consists generally in various constructions and combinations, all as hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 illustrates the application of my ventilating apparatus to a building, a portion of the heater jacket being broken away to illustrate the manner of mounting the foul air flue thereon, Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line a -m of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view through the ventilating apparatus, illustrating the communication between the foul air flue and the smoke flue, Fig. 4 is a plan sectional view, Fig. 5 is a detail view illustrating the base of the pipe which incloses the smoke flue, and the preferred means for operating the damper in the smoke flue. j
In the drawing, 2 represents the'walls of the building in which the apparatus is installed and 3 the chimney.
4 is a heater of suitable construction inclosed by a jacket 5 that is spaced from the walls of the heater and open at the top and bottom and raised above the-floor line to allow the free circulation of air through the space between it and the heater. This jacket is provided at the top and bottom with encircling bands or rings 6. The heater is provided at the top with a neck 7 having a seat 8 for a depending flange 9 provided on the underside of a casting 10. This casting has an opening 11 which registers with the opening in the neck 7 and concentric annular flanges 12 and 13, the former encircling the opening 11 and the latter being preferably located near the periphery of the casting 10. A smoke flue 14: has a lower section adapted to telescope with the flange 12 and an upper section 15 between which and the lower section a bushing 16, preferably in the form of a cast ring, is arranged and provided with annular flanges 17 against which the adjacent ends of the sections 14: and 15 are seated, as shown plainly in Fig. 3. A pipe 18 incloses the smoke flue 14 and is spaced therefrom and is seated on the casting 10, .its lower end having the usual slip joint connection with the flange 13. This pipe preferably extends vertically through the ceiling of the room where the heater is located and through the root of the building, and is provided at its upper end with a suitable cowl 19. The section 15 of the smoke pipe has a laterally turned upper portion and communicates through the wall of the pipe 18 with a section 20 leading into the chimney 3. The smoke flue 14: and the pipe 18 are supported by the casing 10, which has a substantial bearing on the top of the heater, as shown. The lower wall of the smoke flue 14 has on one side an opening 21 leading into the space between the flue and the pipe 18 and a vertical partition 22 is provided ina smoke flue extending from a point below the opening 21 preferably to the middle portion of the bushing 16, dividing the smoke flue into two vertical passages 23 and 24, one communicating at its lower end with the heater and the other with the space between the smoke flue and the pipe 18 through the opening 21.
A damper 25 is pivoted near the top of the partition 22 on a rod 26 which projects horizontally through the walls of the smoke flue and the pipe 18 and is provided with a crank 27 connected with an operating lever This damper may be swung down to the position indicated in Fig. 3 and partially close the top of the passage 23 through the smoke flue. This damper has a flange 29 thereon and may be swung to the position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 3 and close the passage 24- or partially close the same, as may be desired, according to the position of the damper. The foul air flue or pipe 30 has an open lower end below the jacket 5 and is connected at its upper end with the pipe 18 and communicates with Patented July 20, 1915.

the space between this pipe and the smoke flue, the exit of the pipe 80 being preferably opposite the opening 21 in the lower section 14 of the smoke flue. The bands 6 at the top and bottom of the jacket 5 preferably pass through the walls of the pipe 30, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, the edges of the jacket 5 being seated against the pipe between these bands. The jacket, therefore, aids in supporting the foul air pipe and at the same time a portion of the wall of this pipe is exposed to the radiation of heat from heater 4:, thereby establishing a vertical circulation through the foul air pipe. A portion of the weight of the foul air pipe will be sustained by the pipe 18 that is carried by the casting 10, the load being transmitted therethrough to the heater.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination, with a heater and a smoke flue therefor, of a pipe inclosing said smoke flue and spaced therefrom and extending to a point outside the building where the heater is located, said smoke flue having an extension projecting through the wall of said pipe for communication with a chimney, the lower portion of said smoke flue having an opening therein communicating with the space between it and said pipe, a vertical partition provided in said smoke flue and extending upwardly from a point below said opening and forming a passage leading vertically in said smoke flue from said opening, a valve provided near the upper end of said partition and adapted to close either one of the passages through said smoke flue on opposite sides of said partition, and a foul air pipe communicating with the space between said pipe and said smoke flue near said opening.
2. The combination, with a heater and a smoke flue, of a pipe inclosing said smoke flue and spaced therefrom and extending to a point out-side the building where the heater is located, said smoke flue having an extension projecting through the Wall of said pipe for communication with a chimney, a foul air pipe located outside said first named pipe and having an open lower end and communicating at its upper end through the lower portion of said first named pipe adjacent to said heater with the space between said first named pipe and said smoke flue,said smoke flue having an opening in its lower wall opposite the exit opening of said foul air pipe, a vertical partition provided in said smoke flue and extending above and below said opening and a valve mounted in said smoke flue near the upper end of said partition for closing said smoke flue or the passage between the wall of said first named pipe and said partition.
3. The combination, with a heater, of a smoke flue mounted thereon, a foul air flue inclosing said smoke flue and spaced therefrom, the lower wall of said smoke flue having an opening communicating with the space between it and said foul air flue, a vertical partition provided in said smoke flue, dividing it into vertical passages, one of said passages communicating with said heater and the other of said passages being closed at the bottom and communicating with said opening, and a pipe having an open lower end and extending from a point near the floor line and communicating with the space between said smoke flue and said foul air flue adjacent to said opening.
4:. The combination, with a heater and a smoke flue therefor and a foul air flue inclosing said smoke flue and spaced therefrom, the lower portion of said smoke flue having an opening therein communicating with the space between it and said foul air flue, a partition provided in said smoke flue and dividing it into passages, one communieating with said heater and the other with,
the opening in said smoke flue, a valve mounted to close either one of said passages and a pipe depending to a point near the floor line and communicating with the space between said foul air flue and said smoke glue adjacent to the opening in said smoke In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 8d day of April, 1912.
