' ALBERT HENRY HARDY AND STEPHEN DAVIES, OF PONTARDAWE, SWANSEA VALLEY,
WALES.
BEARING BLOCK 0R BRASS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 13, 1915.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ALBERT HENRY HARDY and STEPHEN DAVIES, subjects of His Majesty the King of England, residing at St. Dunstan, Brecon Road, Pontardawe, Swansea Valley, in the county of Glamorgan, South Wales, and Bettws-y-coed, Uplands, Pontardawe, Swansea Valley, in the county of Glamorgan, South Wales, respectively, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Bearing Blocks or Brasses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in bearing blocks and brasses and it refers more particularly to those of the kind in which the blocks or brasses are held in place between the bearing standards by means of wedges.
The present invention has for its ObJBCt to provide a bearing of this kind suitable for use with heavy machinery such as rollingmills and the like where it is frequently necessary to provide for their renewal.
Now according to the present invention in order to reduce the weight of the hearing blocks and thereby cheapen their production we provide a, longitudinally tapering block or brass with a pair of side wings or wedges of relatively cheap metal or material which are adapted to engage longitudinally between the sides of the said block and the vertical bearing standards of the machine.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a side elevation of a block or brass constructed according to the present invention; Fig. 2 is a plan view, and Figs. 3 and 4 are end views taken from opposite ends of the block.
As shown the block or brass proper a is formed with tapering sides a, and, as is usual, with an upper surface a curved to correspond with the shaft or neck end of the rolls with which it is to be employed. The block a itself may be formed of gunmetal, phosphor bronze or any other suitable metal. For use on each side of the said block two side portions 1) are provided which are made of steel, iron or any other relatively cheap metal or material. These side portions are also of tapering form when viewed in plan, as in Fig. 2, and their tapering sides I) are adapted to coact with the sides a of the block a. On their outsides and at one or both ends the portions 6 are provided with oppositely extending wings or lugs 6 adapted to abut against the vertical standards of the bearings of the machine. In use the two side portions 5 are first placed in position and the central block a is then driven in between them, being retained in place by friction and the weight of the shaft or roll.
It will further be appreciated that it is simply necessary when it is desired to replace a worn bearing block to lift the shaft or roll and to drive out the worn block and replace it with a new one.
What we claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. A hearing comprising a longitudinally tapering block or brass and a pair of cooperating side wings or wedges of relatively cheap metal or material which are adapted to engage longitudinally between the sides of the said block and the vertical bearing standards of the machine.
2. A hearing comprising a longitudinally tapering block or brass, and a pair of cooperating side wings or wedges of relatively cheap metal or material which are adapted to engage longitudinally between the side of the said block and the vertical bearing standards of the machine, said side wings or wedges having oppositely extending lugs adapted to abut against the said bearing supports.
In testimony whereof we have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. v
ALBERT HENRY HARDY. STEPHEN DAVIES.
