Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 13, 1915.
Application filed February 19, 1915. SerialNo. 9,396;
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN E. VJINCHESTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Charlotte, in the county of Mecklenburg declare the followin to be a full clear and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in theart' to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in locomotive valve gear.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of locomotive valve gear and to provide an exceedingly simple, practical and eliicient valve gear designed for use on locomotives and other steam engines and capable of afiording a variable cut-off and of enabling the valve to remain absolutely stationary when the reversing mechanism is in the central position.
lVith these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims hereto. appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a valve gear constructed in accordance with this inv ntion and shown applied to a portion of a locomotive, Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the reversing mechanism of the valve gear in a different position from Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on line 33 of Fig. 1.
Like numerals of reference designate cordrawings.
In the accompanying drawings in which is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention, 1 designates a bellcrank fulcrumed at its angle on a pin 2 or other suitvalve stem 3 of the locomotive and-having one of its arms 4: arranged to swing upwardly and downwardly to points above and below the horizontal plane of the valve stem 3. The pin 2 which constitutes the pivot of the bell crank is mounted in a suitable bearhereinafter fully described, illustrated in responding parts in all of the figures of the able pivot in the horizontal plane of the.
Vibratory motion is imparted to the bell crank by an eccentric rod 11 pivotally connected at its rear end by a pin 12 to an auxiliary crank 13 of the axle ll of the main drive wheel 15 of the locomotive and having an upturned forward end 16 which is pivoted by a pin 17 "or other suitable fastening device to a depending arm 18 of the bell crank 1. Various other means, however, may be employed for actuating the eccentric rod and when; the eccentric rod is reciprocated the depending arm 18 of the bell crank willloe oscillated in a'backward and forward direction.
The radius link is supported at its rear end by an approximately vertical link rod 19 connected at its upper end to the radius link by the pin 9 extending therefrom to a rearwardly extending arm 20 of a rock shaft 21 which is designed to extend entirely across the frame of the locomotive. The rock shaft 21 which is journaled in suitable bearings is equipped with a forwardly ex tending weighted counterbalancing arm 22 and it is provided with an upwardly extending operating arm 23 which is connected at its upper end by a reach rod 2a with a re of the said central position the valve gear is versing lever, (not, shown). The forwardly extending counterbalancing arm 22 is equipped with a slidableweight 25 adapted to be secured at difierent distances frompoint in advance of its central position the valve gear is in forward motion and when the sald arm 23 is carried to a point 1n rear in backward motion.
While the valve gear is designed primarily for use on locomotives it, of'course, may be advantageously employed on various types of steam engines.
What is claimed is 1. A valve gear including a bell crank fulcrumed at its angle in substantially the horizontal plane of the valve stemof an engine and having one of its arms arranged to swing to opposite sides of the said plane, aradius link carried by the said arm of the bell crank and arranged to swing from a central point coincident with the pivot of the bell crank to points at either side of the same-to provide a variable cut off, means for adjusting the radius link and means for imparting motion to the bell crank.
52. A valve gear including a bell crank fulcrumed at its angle in substantially the horizontal plane of gine and having one of its arms arranged to swing to opposite sides of the said plane, a radius link carried by the said arm of the bell crank and arranged to swing from a central point coincident with the pivot of the bell crank to points at either side of the same to provide a variable cut-off, meansfor adjusting the radius link and an eccentric rod connected with one of the arms of the bell crank for imparting motion to the same.
3. A valve gear including a bell crank fulcrumed at its angle in substantially the,
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the the valve stem ofan encentral point coincident with the pivot of the bell crank to points at either side of the same to provide a variable cut-off, means for imparting motion to the bell crank, a shaft having an arm located beneath the radius link, a link rod connecting the arm 'with the radius link and means for partially rotating the shaft to adjust the radius link. V
4. A valve gear including a bell crank fulcrumeda't its angle in substantially the horizontal'plane of the valve stem of an engine and having one of its arms arranged to swing to opposite sides of the said plane, a radiuslink carried by the said arm of the bell crank and arranged to swing from a central point coincident with the pivot of the bell crank to points at either side of the same to provide a variable cut-oil, means for imparting motion to the bell crank, a counterbalanced shaft having an arm extending beneath the radius link and connected therewith, said shaft being also provided with an upwardly extending operating arm and a reach rod connected .to the operating arm.
5. The combination with a valve stem of a bell crank fulcrumed at its angle on a horizontal axis in the rear of the valve stem and having a forwardly extending arm and a depending arm, a radius link pivoted to the forwardly extending arm and extending rearwardly from its pivot, means for connecting the radius link with the valve stem,
means for adjusting the radius link up wardly and downwardly above and below a central point coincident with the fulcrum of the bell crank and an eccentric rod connected to the depending arm of the bell crank. I
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
