NUT-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.

T all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EMANUEL WOODINGS, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Verona, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Nut-Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to nut-locks, and more particularly to the helical-washer type.
The object of my invention is to provide a nut-lock of this type, which will require a very heavy pressure to bring the coils into parallel relation and so increase the efliciency for locking the nut securely in position against turning.
To these ends, my invention comprises, generally stated, a helical-washer having a portion of the washer which is thinner than the metal at the main portion of said washer, and a raised portion or protuberance within the limits of said thinner portion.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved nut-lock; Fig. 2 is a view showing the nut-lock in position before the nut is screwed down; Fig. 3 shows the position when the nut has been screwed down; and Fig. 4 is a diagram illustrating the thinner portion of the washer and a protuberance.
In the drawing, the numeral 2 designates a helical washer of suitable thickness and made of a high-carbon steel, which will require a very high pressure to bring the coils into parallel position. The thickness of the metal is reduced as at 3 and 4c, and in Fig. A I have illustrated in diagram in an exaggerated form, this reduced portion, the letter 6 representing the thickness of the main portion of the washer, and the space indicated by c, the greatest point of reduction or thinnest portion, the reduction taking the form of the arc of a circle extending from (Z to e.
The washer is provided with the projections or protuberances 5, which are located within the arc (Z, 6' of the reduced portion of the washer, and preferably at or near the mid-point thereof.
When the nut-lock is to be applied, the washer is placed with one end against the fish-plate or other abutment 6, and the nut 7 is applied to the bolt 8 whereupon the nut Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the 7 is screwed down, and as it is screwed down, it eliminates the spiral of the washer and brings the coils into parallel arrangement, as indicated in Fig. 3. The protuberances in flattening out the arcs cl, 6 of the reduced por tions 3 and 4: leave depressions 9 between the abutment 6 and the inner face of the nut 7 at points adjacent said protuberances, while the portion of the washer opposite said protuberances and forming the reduced portions of the washer, are flattened and forced into contact with the abutment and the inner face of the nut, as clearly indicated in Fig. 3. This will cause the ends of the Washer to be forced outwardly and so act to tighten the grip on the nut. In this manner, I provide a nut-lock which, when the nut is screwed up, will in addition to the outward pressure created by forcing the helix into parallel relation, have the additional pressure due to the flattening of the arcs d, 6. By this action, the metal is sprung so as to offer a greater resistance to the turning of the nut, and it is held rigidly in position.
What I claim is:
1. A nut-lock comprising a helical-washer having one or more portions thinner than the main portion of the washer, and a protuberance within the limits of said reduced portion.
2. A nut-lock comprising a helical-washer having one or more thinner portions conforming to the arc of a circle, and a protuberance opposite same and within the limits of said arc.
3. A nut-lock comprising a helical-washer having one or more thinner portions conforming to the arc of a circle, and a protuberance at the mid-point of same.
