I To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARTIN ENGERS, a British subject, and resident of the city of Toronto, in the county of York and Province of Ontario, in the Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Dimmers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of same.
My invention relates to an illuminating means comprising a source of light, a reflector therefor, and an adjustable-shutter which can be selectively moved to an open position for the radiation of all the direct and reflected rays or to a partly closed position for the radiation of all the direct rays and part of the reflected rays or to a closed position to intercept all of the reflected rays, the objects of my invention being: (a) to construct this shutter of a series of arc shaped sections, each of which is pivotally fixed at one end to a stationary part of the illuminating means and is provided at the other end with a projection having a limitedmovement in a radially slotted adjusting ring for moving the arc-shaped sections to their adjusted position and maintaining them in such position until it is again moved; and (b) to provide the adjusting ring with suitable stopping elements which will determine. the limits of the opening and closing movements of the shutter.
For an understanding of my invention reference is to be had to the following description and to the accompanying drawings, in which I Figure 1, is a vertical section of a lamp provided with an adjustable shutter in front of the source of light for controlling the re fiected and direct rays, the shutter in this view being shown in its closed position.

may be so positioned that the arc-shaped sections can be moved to completely close the opening through the shutter so that neither the direct nor the reflected rays-can be projected.
When the adjusting ring is moved in the opposite direction to that indicated by arrow in Fig. 2, the arc-shaped sections are positioned to increase the size of the opening through the shutter until the shutter assumes the position shown in Fig. 4.
As shown in Fig. 2, the annulus or stationary ring 1 is provided with two fixed stops l1 and 12 respectively, and the adjusting ring 9 is provided with a stop 13 revoluble in unison with the ring and employed to engage the stationary stops 11 and 12 to arrest the movement of the adjusting ring when it comes into contact with either of said stops and thus limit the movement of the shutter in an opening or closing direction respectively,

By means of this device it is possible to selectively move the shutter to 'a fully opened position for the radiation of all the direct and reflected rays, or to move it to a partly closed position for the radiation of all the direct rays and part of the reflected rays, or, to a closed position to intercept all of the reflected rays. i
Having thus fully described the nature of my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The hereinbefore described device comprising a reflector, a source of light, and an adjustable shutter selectively movable to an open position for the unobstructed radiation and reflection of all the light rays, or to a closed'position for intercepting all or part of the reflected rays, said shutter comprising a rotatable adjusting ring having a series of radial slots therein, and a series of arcshaped shutter sections one end of each of which is pivotally fixed, and the other end of each of which is movable and provided with a projection contained in one of said radial slots, said adjusting ring during its rotation engaging said projections and selectively moving the shutter sections to an open orclosed position.
2. The hereinbefore described device comprising a reflector, a source of light, and an adjustable shutter selectively movable to an open position for the unobstructed radiation and reflection of all the light rays. or to a closed position for intercepting all or part masses of the reflected rays, said shutter comprising a rotatable adjusting ring having a series of radial slots therein, and a series of arcshaped shutter sections one end of each of which is pivotally fixed, and the other end of each of which is'movable and provided with a projection contained in one of said radial slots, said adjusting ring during its rotation engaging said projections and selectively moving the shutter sections to an open .or closed position, two fixedly positioned stops, and a stopping. member for the adjusting ring to engage said stops and arrest the movement of the adjusting ring when it has reached its limit of motion in either an opening or closing direction.
3. The hereinbefore described device comprising a reflector, asource of light, and an adjustable shutter selectively movable to an open position for the unobstructed radiation and reflection of all the light rays, or to a closed position for intercepting all or part of the reflected rays, said shutter comprising a rotatable adjusting ring having a series of radial slots therein, and a series of are shaped shutter sections one end of each of which is pivotally fixed, and the other end of each of which is movable and provided with a projection contained in one of said radial slots, said adjusting ring during its rotation engaging said projections and selectively moving the shutter sections to an open or closed position, two fixedly positioned stops and a stopping member for the adjusting ring to engage said stops and arrest the movement of the adjusting ring when it has reached its limit of motion in an opening or closing direction, said stops and stopping members being clear of the path of the direct and reflected rays from the source of light and reflector.
4. The hereinbefore described device comprising a reflector, a source of light, and an adjustable shutter selectively movable to an open position for the unobstructed radiation and reflection of all the light rays, or to a closed position for intercepting all or part of the reflected rays, said shutter comprising a rotatable adjusting ring having a series-of radial slots therein, and a series of arc-shaped shutter sections one end of each of which is pivotally fixed, and the other end of each of which is movable and provided with a projection contained in one of said radial slots, said adjusting ring during its rotation engaging said projections and selectively moving the shutter sections to an open-or closed position, and means for causing the rotation of the adjusting ring to effect the opening and closing movements of said shutter sections. 1
