To all whom t may concern y Be it known that I, Lnwrs C. Barinas, a citizen of the United States, residing in Easton, in the county of Northampton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pulsatory PercussiveDrills, of which the following is a speciication.
This invention relates to percussive drills and more particularly to that type of drill wherein the piston is reciprocated by pulsations produced by a reciprocating pump or compressor directly connected with the drill cylinder.'
One object of the present invention is to produce a drilling mechanism of this type of great simplicity and great elliciency and a further object is to so construct such a drill that air from the drill may be conveyed through the drill steel to effectively remove rock cuttings and dust therefrom.
With these objects in view I have devised a drilling\ mechanism a practical embodiment of lwhich is shown in the accompanying` drawing in which the, figure shows a sidel- View of the drilling mechanism partly in section and partly in elevation.
rl`he drill itself as shown comprises a cylinder 1 in which reciprocates a piston 2 the forward part of which is reduced in diameter :forming .a shank?) which slides in' fa sleeve 4; of smallerl diameter than the main cylinder. In the sleeve- 4: are'. the cylinn drical holes or chambers', ywhich',fopeninto the forward'part of the cylinder l forming a` part'thereof. A port 6' opens from the main part of the cylinder atapointjust uncovered by the piston at the end of its forward 'stroke' and from this port a passage 7 leads to the forward end of the cylinder to the other side of the large diameter portion of the piston. In the passage 7 is seated a spring pressed plate check valve 8 which allows fluid to pass from the back to the front end of the cylinder but not in the reverse direction. Forward of the-cylinder is a front head 9 inwhich is rotatably mounted a steel holding sleeve l0 which is adapted'to hold the hollow drill steel 11. The extreme forward part of the piston is provided with spiral' flutes 12 which slide in a similarly grooved bushing in the rear end of the steel holding sleeve 10. In operation the reciprocation of the piston 22 causes a corresponding reciproca-tion of the piston 2, the up stroke of the piston,v
22 causing the piston 2 to move forwardly striking a blow on the drill steel. At the end of the forward stroke of the piston 2 lll@ " tions of the cylinder 21 and piston 22'i-ai's pump being of such capacity that the co pression in the drill cylinder is constant v maintained considerably above atmospheric pressure. It is to be noticedthat this pump delivers its air to the drill cylinder during the whole forward stroke of the piston 2, in this way adding to the force of the blow of the piston. If the air were delivered to the drill cylinder on its backwardstroke it is apparent that the backward motion of the piston 2 would be considerably retarded.
By the use of the present.' construction a heavy and efficient blow is given to the drill steel and an ample suply of air forced through the drill steel to e ciently clear the hole, ther being a small constant flow through eaka ge around the rifle bar through the piston and a periodically greater flow of a momentary and sudden nature through the ports 18 at the end of each back stroke of the piston 2.
It is to be understood that the presentv showing and description discloses only one specified modiiication of my invention and other forms'and' modifications yare included in the spirit and scope of the invention as` supplying additional fluid lutweenl saidV drlvlngfand driven pistons during the forward stroke of'said driven piston.
