WILLIAM E. MEYER,
OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
Letters Patent No. 114,459, dated May 2, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT in SAIL-HANKS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To an whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. MEYER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hanks for Sails; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which drawing- Figure 1 represents a sectional front view of this inventionwhenthe parts are locked.-
Figure 2 is a similar view of the same, showing the parts detached.
Similar. letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a hank which is provided with a detachable key, which, when secured in the hank, forms the connection between the same and the sail in such a manner that by detaching the keys from the hanks the sail can be readily taken off and replacedyby auotherwithout being compelled to take the hanks off from the rope. When the key is to be conuected to the hank it is locked in its position by a dog and spring catch, and the back of said dog is camshaped, so that when the spring catch is drawn back the strain of the sail on the key is enabled to throw the dog back, and the key is released.
In the drawing-- The letter A designates a hank, which is by preference cast of malleable iron, or which may be made of any other suitable material.
In this bank is made a mortise, a, capable or receiving the key B, which is provided with eyes I), to take the rope by means of which the sail is secured to said key.
The key is formed with a lateral projection or nose,
0, which catches in a corresponding recess in the mortise a, (see fig. 1,) and after the same has been introduced iuthe mortise it is locked in its position by a dog, 0. This dog swings on a pivot, d, secured in the hank A, and it fits into a recess, e, provided in the side of the bank.
In the tip of said dog is a spring catch, f, and if the dog is turned up this spring catch looks into a cavity in the hank.
The back g of the dog is cam-shaped, so that when the key is in its place and said dog is turned up to the position shown in fig. 1, it will lock the key firmly in its position; but if. the spring catch is drawn back the strain of the sail acting on the key-will throw the dog down to the position shown'in fig. 2, and the key is released,
.In order to efl'ect this purpose the pivot dot the dog must be situated somewhat below the lowest cor- .ner of the cam-shaped back, and the nose of the key must be 'inclinedat its .under side more or less, so
that a downward strain on. the key will be capableofturning the dog down to the position shown in fig. 2 as soon as the spring catch is opened.
,This bank is intended particularly for jib-sails on yachts, and by means of the detachable key I am enabled to take down the jib and replace it by another in a very short time.
My hank may, however, be used with advantage for fore-and-aft sails and gaif-topsails, and it is obvious that its construction may be modified in various ways involving the same principle;
What I claim as new, and desire to'secure by Letters Patent, i s- 1. A hank with a detachable key, constructed s-ub stantially in the manner herein shown and described.
' 2. The dog 0 with its cam-shaped back 9, in combination with the detachable key B and bank A, substantially as set forth.
This specification signed by methis 14th day-of February, 1871 W. E. MEYER.
Witnesses W. HAUFF, E. F. KASTENHUBEB.
