SCRATCH-GAGE.

To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, EMORY J. SYLvEsTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Scratch-Gage, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to improvements in scratch gages,'the primary object of the invention being the provision of a` novel form of gage provided with a circular cutting disk removably yet fiXedly attached to one end thereof, a sliding gage member being disposed upon the rod or stock bar and provided with novel means wherebyr the same is properly clamped upon the bar at any desired adjustment without marring the bar or rod, said clamping member being so constructed as toprovide a ready handle to iit the fingers so that the manipulation of the scratching or scribing disk will form the desired line and theV operation is rendered easy.

TWith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the drawings-Figure 1 is a side elevation of the complete gage. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view showing the means for attaching the circular cutter and with the clamping member of the gage being shown in section and in rod clamping position. Fig. 3 is a detail plan view of the clamping sleeve of the clamping member. Fig. t is a section taken on line 1 4 of Fig. 8.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the stock bar or rod, which in the present instance is made cylindrical and is provided at one end with the threaded socket 2 for the reception of the screw 3, whose head 4 is exterior of the circular scribing disk 5, so that the disk will be properly secured to the end of the bar or rod 1 and thus present a scribing edge exteriorly of the peripheral surface of the bar or rod, so that the necessity of positioning the bar or rod in special position for scribing is dispensed with, and also by means of which the disk Specication of Letters Patent.

rIhe clamping gage member 6 is disposed to be readily slid and rotated upon the bar or rod 1, so that the relative distance between the adjacent face thereof and the cutter or scribing member 5 may be varied according to the distance it is desired to produce a scribe mark from the edge of the material operated upon.

The member 6 consists of the disk 16, socketed and interiorly threaded as at 27 for the reception of the split sleeve 28 and the plain `sleeve 29, whose threaded end 80 fits within the disk 16 and about the split sleeve 28. rlhe jam nut 31 engages the threads 30 and abuts the adjacent end of the disk 16 to lock the parts. A set screw 32 is carried by the sleeve 2O and operates to grip the split sleeve to hold the parts locked upon the bar 1. It will thus be seen that by releasing the set screw 32, the disk 16 may be slid upon the bar 1 and thus be locked at any desired adjustment thereon. The disk 16 may be either rectangular or circular as desired. 'Ihe split sleeve 28 is adapted to be engaged by the set screw 82 so that in tightening the present device upon the stock or bar 1, the screw does not injure the same, but produces the necessary clamping action upon the split sleeve 28 to cause the sleeve to assist in grippingthe bar or stock 1 and thus locking the scribing member in place.

What isclaimed is:

A scratch gage, including a cylindrical bar, a circular scriber of greater diameter than the bar connected to be carried by one end of the bar, and a slide mounted upon the bar for rotary and longitudinal movements, said slide comprising a split clamping sleeve surrounding the bar, a cylindrical sleeve incasing the split sleeve and having one end exteriorly threaded, a set screw carried by the latter sleeve for engaging the split sleeve, a disk having a threaded socket to receive the threaded end of the sleeve, and a lock nut for locking the disk in position upon the threaded sleeve.
