0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMns A. SHERWOOD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Scotia, in the county of Schenectady and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pail-Supports, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in supports and more par ticularly to a pail support, the main object of the present invention being the provision of a support which is adapted to be remov ably applied to the rungs of a ladder whereby to support a paint pail in an upright position.

Another object of the present invention is the provision of a pail support of the above character which can be quickly applied to a ladder or removed therefrom and which is provided with means whereby the pail sup porting member can be readily adjusted according to the inclination of the ladder.

A further object of the present invention is the provision of a pail support of the above character which will possess advantages in points of efficiency and durability, is inexpensive to manufacture and is simple in construction and operation.

With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.

In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, Figure 1 is a detail perspective view of a pail support constructed in accordance with my invention, and illustrating the same as applied to the rungs of a ladder. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the adjusting means. Fig. 8 is a detail perspective view of the hinge plate secured to the lower edge of the holder. Fig. 4 is a detail transverse sectional view illustrating the manner of attaching the plate, which is illustrated in Fig. 8, to the bottom of the pail holder; and Fig. 5 is a detail bottom plan View of one side of the pan, illustrating the plate hingedly connected thereto.

In carrying out my invention, I provide what will be hereinafter referred to as a supporting member and which is generally indicated in the accompanying drawing by the numeral 1. This supporting member is formed of a single length of heavy wire or a light weight rod, the intermediate portion of which is bent substantially V-shaped in form, as illustrated at 2. The wire is eX- tonded from this V-shaped hook to form substantially horizontal portions 8 which are adapted to be arranged within suitable bearings 4 formed at each end of a movable plate 5. The ends of the wire or rod are then converged inwardly and secured within sleeves 6 formed upon opposite edges of the plate 7, said plate being curved arcuately, the purpose of which will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

The plate 7 is provided with a plurality of spaced openings 8 and further provided with longitudinal slots 9 which communicate with one side of the openings 8. The holder, which is generally indicated by the numeral 10, constitutes a shallow pan member and in order to hingedly connect the same to the plate 5, portions of the bottom of the pan are struck outwardly and bent upon themselves to form spaced bearing sleeves 11 which are adapted to be arranged between the sleeves 12 formed on the plate 5 and receive a pin whereby to hingedly connect the plate 5 to the bottom of the pan member 10.

It will be noted that the holder or pan 10 is hingedly connected to the plate 5 at one side of the pan and in order to support the outer side, I provide a brace rod 13, the upper end of which is formed with an eye and arranged between spaced ears 14, which are formed by striking out portions of the side walls of the pan 10 and disposing them at right angles to the pan. lhe rod 13 is pivotally mounted upon the medial portion of a wire 15 which extends through the ears 1 1 and has its ends disposed beneath the bottom of the pan and soldered or otherwise secured thereto. The lower end of the rod 13 is provided with an eye 16 and mounted for rotation therein is a pin 17, one end of which is provided with a lug 18, while the other end thereof is provided with a thumb piece 19.

From the above it will be apparent that the pan 10 can be quickly adjusted according to the inclination of the ladder, by inserting the outer end of the pin 17 within the selected opening 8, so that the lug 18 will pass through the slot 9. The thumb piece 19 is then grasped to rotate the pin 17 so as to turn the lug away from the slot 9,

whereby to securely retain the lower end of the rod 13 in engagement with the plate 7. It will be apparent from the foregoing that in placing my improved pail support upon a ladder, the \l-shaped portion 2 is engaged over the rung of the ladder, according to the height it is desired to support the pail, and the rod 13 is then adjusted according to the inclination of the ladder. The pin 16 is then engaged within one of the openings 8 and the lug 18 disposed at an angle with respect to the slot 9 in order to securely hold the rod and support the pan 10 in a horizontal position. It will be apparent that I have provided a simple and durable pail support which can be manufactured at a comparatively low cost and which, at the same time, can be quickly applied to or removed from a ladder.

While I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention, it will be obvious that various changes in the details of construction and in the proportions may be resorted to for successfully carrying my invention into pract1ce, without sacrificing any of the novel features or departing from the scope of the invention, as defined by the appended claims.

Having thus described this invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent, is a 1. A pail holder including a supporting member constructed from a single wire rod having its intermediate portion bent to provide a hook adapted to be engaged with a ladder rung, a pail receiver mounted upon said member at the inner end of the hook, an elongated plate connected at one of its ends to the extremities of the wire supporting member and adapted for hearing engagement upon an adjacent ladder rung, and bracing means connected to the pail re ceiver and provided with means for adjustably connecting the same to said plate.

A device of the class described including a supporting element having an arcuate plate attached to the lower end thereof, said plate being provided with a plurality of openings and further provided with slots communicating with said openings, aholder hingedly connected with the support at one side of the holder, a brace rod hingedly connected to the holder at the opposite side, a rotatable pin carried by the lower end of the rod adapted to be inserted through the openings in the plate, a lug formed on the pin adapted to extend through the slots, and means whereby to rotate said pin and arrange the lug out of alinement with the slots.

A device of the class described including a supporting element consisting of a single red having its intermediate portion bent into V-shape, the ends being bent to form a horizontal portion, thence extending convergently, an arcuate plate secured to the ends of the rod, a plate mounted upon the horizontal portion, a holder hingedly connected at one side of the same with the plate, a brace rod pivotally connected with the holder at the opposite side and adapted to be engaged and disengaged with the plate at various intervals thereon, as and for the purpose set forth.

A pail support including a wire pail supporting member having its intermediate portion bent to provide a hook for engage ment over a ladder rung, the end portions of said wire being convergently disposed, an elongated metal plate permanently secured to the extremities of the converging end portions of the wire, a pail receiver mounted upon said supporting member at the inner end of the hook thereon, a brace rod pivotally connected at one of its ends to said receiver, and a rotatable locking element mounted in the other end of said rod and adapted to be adjustably engaged with said plate.

5. A device of the character described ineluding a holder, a hook-shaped member hingedly connected to the holder and including downwardly extending members disposed in parallel relation for a portion of their length, a strip having sleeves formed upon its marginal edges, each of said sleeves embracing one of said members, said strip having a plurality of openings therein, a holder mounted upon said hook-shaped member, a brace rod hingedly connected with the holder opposite the hook-shaped member and extending downwardly into ongagement with said strip, and means en gageable through any one of said openings in the strip for supporting the brace rod in adjusted positions.
