To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUDoLr GOTTLIEB, manufacturer, a citizen of Austria-Hungary, residing at Briinn, Province of Moravia, Austria-Hungary, have invented a new and useful Apparatus for Spraying Designs on Fabrics; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
In my stenciling device, described in Patent No. 1,013,597 issued January 2, 1912, the vessel, holding the dyers bath and fitted with nozzles, oscillates about its vertical axis, in order that the surfaces sprayed upon by the nozzles may be larger, and in order that all colors used may be sprayed upon each spot of the passing fabric. In this case the dye receptacle must be nearly as long as the width of the fabric to be stenciled, and the nozzles must be provided in such a number that the color-jets emanating therefrom strike the full width of the fabric.
According to the present invention a dye receptacle is used which is much shorter than the width of the fabric to be stenciled. This is reciprocated parallel to the axle of the drums, over which the fabric is led in such manner that in the temporary initial position of the vessel it is opposite to one edge of the fabric, while in its temporary terminal position it is opposite to the other edge of the fabric. Owing to the limited number of the nozzles required, the first cost of the dye receptacle is reduced and, inaddition, it can be more easily cleansed, this cleansing being quite difficult when the known carrying long nozzles are used, the length of which corresponds to the width of the fabric. In contrast with such tubes the dye receptacle allows the staggering of the nozzles in regard to height, applying in this manner broad color stripes on the fabric. In those cases, however, where the nozzles are arranged in juxtaposition, each spot of the fabric is exposed to the jets of several nozzles and satisfactory dyeing is the result. With this device it is possible to emit from the nozzles heavier or lighter jets while with the known contrivances it was only pos sible to alter the length of the spray, the coloring power of which remained constant.

tion, Figure 1 is a side-view; Fig. 2 the front view and Fig. 3 the plan view of one form of construction of the contrivance for the reciprocation of the dye receptacle fitted with a battery of nozzles; and Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view of the dye receptacle shown on a larger scale.
The dye reservoir a, which may be fitted with any number of nozzles b, staggered in regard to height or placed in one level, is shiftable on horizontal parallel rods 3, 4 with the guide-blocks, 1, 2, detachably con nected therewith. The guide block 2 carries a vertical slit 5, traversed by a bolt 6, secured by its extremities to endless parallel chains 9, 10 and passing over the chain wheels 7, 8. The chains 9, 10 are driven by a shaft 11, the bevel gear 12 of which is in mesh with the bevel gear 14 keyed on the shaft 13. The shaft 13, carrying one chainwheel 7, has mounted thereon, by the side of the latter, a chain-wheel 15 connected by a chain 16 with the chain-wheel 18 mounted on the shaft 17. The second chain wheel 19, mounted on the shaft 17, is connected by means of a chain'20 with the chain wheel 22 keyed on the shaft 21 of the second chain wheel 7. Thus, when the shaft 11 is rotated, both chains 9, 10 move in the direction of the arrow, and the bolt 6 reciprooates the dye reservoir a parallel to the axle of the drum 8 from one end to the other of the rod 3. The length of the path of the reservoir is determined by the chains 9 and 10. By reference to Fig. 2 it will be seen that the length of the path may be many times greater than the greatest dimension of the reservoir in the direction of said path. This permits a relatively small tank to cover a great width of fabric. Thus, coloring matter is applied on the fabric in stripes over its whole width, this being done, according to the arrangement of the nozzles, either in a broad or in a narrow stripe, in which lat ter case each spot of the fabric is sprayed by each nozzle.
The dye reservoir 0; into which dye-material is fed through the pipe 0;, is separated by a partition-wall a from the chamber 23, to which compressed air is admitted through the tube 24. Nozzles b directed toward the drum 8, of the air-chamber, are screwed in the wall 26; and inside the same there are placed the extremities of the small tubes 25, communicating with the dye reservoir. The latter can be closed by means of cocks not shown and are close together in the lid of the dye reservoir. Compressed air passing through the nozzlesdraws dye-material with it and sprays the dye-material upon the fabric.

I the color-sprays which emanate will be richest in coloring matter. The farther the mouths of the nozzles are from the mouths of the tubes, the poorer the emitted sprays will be in coloring matter, as in this case a mixture of much air and little coloring matter passes out.
I claim:
1. In a device for stenciling fabrics, the combination of a means for supporting the fabric in a determined path; a dye reservoir provided with nozzles opposite the fabric supporting means and movable transversely to the path of the fabric; and means for reciprocating said reservoir across the fabric supporting means, the length of the path of the reservoir being at least twice the length of the reservoir in the direction of the path of the reservoir.
2. In a device for stenciling fabrics, the combination of a means for supporting the fabric in a determined path; a dye reservoir provided with nozzles opposite the fabric supporting means and movable transversely to the path of the fabric; and means for reciprocating said reservoir across the fabric supporting means, the length of the path of the reservoir being at least three times the length of the reservoir in the direction of the path of the reservoir.
3. In a device for stenciling fabrics, the
V combination of a means for supporting the fabric in a determined path; a dye reservoir provided with nozzles opposite the fabric supporting means and movable transversely to the path of the fabric; and means for reciprocating said reservoir across the fabric supporting means, the length of the path of the reservoir being at least four times the length of the reservoir in the direction of the path of the reservoir.
4:. In a device for stenciling fabrics, the combination of a means for supporting the fabric in a determined path; a dye reservoir provided with nozzles opposite the fabric supporting means and movable transversely to the path of the fabric; a stationary supporting means for said reservoir and means for reciprocating said reservoir on said supporting means across the fabric supporting means, the length of the reservoir supporting means being at least three times the length of the reservoir in the direction of the path of the reservoir.
5. In a device for stenciling fabrics, the combination of a means for supporting the fabric in a determined path; a dye reservoir provided with nozzles opposite the fabric supporting means and movable transversely to the path of the fabric; a pair of supporting rods on which the reservoir is slidably supported; and means for reciprocating said reservoir across the fabric supporting means, the length of the rods being at least three times the length of the reservoir in the direction of the path of the reservoir.
6. In a device for stenciling fabrics, the combination of a means for supporting the fabric in a determined path; a dye reservoir provided with nozzles opposite the fabric supporting means and movable transversely to the path of the fabric; a pair of supporting means on which the reservoir is slidably supported; and means for reciprocating said reservoir across the fabric supporting means.
7. In a device for stenciling fabrics, the combination of a means for supporting the fabric in a determined path; a dye reservoir provided with nozzles opposite the fabric supporting means and movable transversely to the path of the fabric; a pair of parallel stationary rods on which the reservoir is slidably supported; and means for reciprocating said reservoir across the fabric supporting means.
8. In a stenciling device, the combination of a drum-like part adapted to support and move a fabric; a pair of horizontal parallel guide rods parallel to the axis of the drum-like part; a guide-block slidably mounted on said rods and provided with a vertical slot; an endless chain having portions thereof disposed parallel to said rods and near said slot; means for supporting and moving said chain; a pin carried by said chain and engaging in said slot; a dye-reservoir connected to said guide-block; and spraying nozzles on said reservoir.
9. In a stenciling device, the combination of a drum-like part adapted to support and move a fabric; a pair of horizontal parallel guide rods parallel to the axis of the drum-like part; a guide-block slidably mounted on said rods and provided with a vertical slot; an endless chain having portions thereof disposed parallel to said rods and near said slot; means for supporting and moving said chain; a pin carried by said chain and engaging in said slot; a dye-reservoir connected to said guide-block; comprising a dye-chamber and a compressed air chamber; nozzles screwed into a Wall of the compressed air chamber and provided with worm-wheels and having terminal openings; tubes communicating with the dye-chamber and terminating near said openings; and a worm gear engaging said wheels.
10. In a stenciling device for fabrics, the combination of means for moving the fabric in a determined path; parallel guide rods disposed above the fabric transverse to the path thereof; a dye-reservoir movably mounted on said rods; and a reciprocating means for reciprocating the reservoir entirely across said fabric, said reciprocating means comprising a guide block secured to the reservoir and having a vertical slot therein, a pair of chain wheels disposed near each opposite end of said rods, parallel endless chains on said Wheels, and a transverse bolt secured at opposite ends to said chains and passing through said slot.
11. In a stenciling device for fabrics, the combination, of means for moving the fabric in a determined path; parallel guide rods disposed above the fabric transverse to the path thereof; a dye-reservoir movably mounted on said rods and provided with nozzles; a reciprocating means for reciprocating the reservoir entirely across said fabric, and a means operatively connected with all of the nozzles for simultaneously controlling the supply of coloring material passing through said nozzles.
