Be it known that T, O'rro Joi-INE, engineer, a subject or citizen of the German Empire, residing at Bautzen, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in llffachines for Cutting Piles of Paper and the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention consists of an improvement in the machine described in the specification filed with my application for Letters Patent Serial No. 762657 of April 21, 1913, and more particularly in the modification described in my subsequent specification Serial No. 811,04Jr in which the clamp springs are connected at one end with a fixed pivot and at the other end with a lever which is itself connected with a toggle joint. This toggle joint is operated by a crank gear and its other free end is connected with the levers serving to actuate the press beam. Tn practice this arrangement is found to be complicated owing to the employment of the toggle joint. The spring pressure is transmitted to the press beam by the intermediary of a large number of levers and the toggle joint, whereby useless work is performed. This driving mechanism can be greatly simplified by dispensing with the toggle joint and interposing an appropriate form of springs between the crank gear and the lever mechanism for operating the press beam.
Now the present invention resides in arranging the press springs between two levers oscillating in stationary bearings, one of these levers being moved by the crank gear, while the other transmits to the press beam either directly or by the intermediary of levers the movement imparted to it and the spring pressure exerted upon it.
An embodiment of the said machine is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows the machine in front elevation, and Fig. 2 is a cross section thereof The machine is driven in the known manner off the pinion 14 onto the intermediate wheel 15. The pinion 16 is mounted upon the same shaft and meshes with the eccentric wheel 18 mounted on the shaft 17. Upon the other end of the shaft 17 the eccentric disk 19 is mounted and the tension rods 21 for the knife beams 22 engage the studs 20 on this disk in the known manner. The connecting rod 12 connects the crank 13 with the oscillating lever 10 which rotates freely on the shaft 11. The lever 7 is connected with the lever 10 by means of one or more springs 9. The bell crank lever is also freely rotatable upon the shaft 11 and the bell crank lever 4 and the lever 7 are firmly keyed upon the shaft 8. By means of the tension rod 6 the bell crank levers 4 and 5 are connected one with the other and by means of the links 3 and the tension rods 2 they are connected with the press beam 1.
The clamping device acts in the following manner: The crank 13 is rotated by the wheel 24 and by means of the connecting rod 12 imparts a reciprocating movement to the levers 7 and and consequently to the spring 9 also. The bell crank lever 5 and the bell crank lever 4- which transmits its movement to the bell crank lever 5 through the tension rod 6 (both these bell crank levers being connected with the press beam 1 by means of the link 3 and tension rods 2) impart a vertical reciprocating movement to the beam. 1. if a pile of paper is situated beneath it the beam will bear upon it and as a result the rods 2, the links 3, the bell crank levers 4i and 5 and the lever 7 are incapable of further displacement so that the cranks 13 are only able to compress the springs 9 by means of the connecting rod 12 and the lever 10, the pressure of these springs being then transmitted tothe press beam.
The crank positions for the knife beam 22 and press beam 1 are the same as described in my prior specification Serial No. 762657, of April 21, 1913. When the machine is started first of all the compression takes place and then after the spring is compressed, the pile of paper is cut through.
By introducing slight modification the compression springs 9 can be replaced by tension springs.
Tn the embodiment of the invention here described the reciprocating movement of the spring casing 9 and its spring pressure are transmitted to the lever 7, which oscillates about the shaft 8 and simultaneously displaces the bell crank lever 1 and with it the bell crank lever 5. By means of special connecting rods 3 and tension. rods 2 these two bell crank levers operate the press beam 1. The oscillating lever 7 can, however, also be constructed in'such a manner that it will act directly upon the tension rods 2, similarly the oscillating levers 4 and 5 can be replaced by lever mechanisms of different construction.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in What manner the same is to be performed, I declare that What I claim is:
In paper cutting machines of the character described, in combination With the cutter thereof, an automatic spring actuated paper presser, two levers between the springs of said presser, stationary hearings in Which said levers oscillate, a crank gear for operating one of said levers and a system of levers connected to the other of said levers for imparting to the beam of the presser a reciprocating vertical movement and compressing the paper, substantially as described.
