FRANK SO-LEY,l OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO MILLER LOCK CO., I
- OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
PADLOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent. i
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, FRANK SoLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Padlocks, of which the following is a specification.
The object vof my invention is to provide a lock with a lever which, when the shackle is raised and the bolt is withdrawn, acts as a dust guard for the opening in the body of the lock and at the same time locks the bolt in the withdrawn position and, when the lock is closed, engages the heel of the shackle. This object I attain in the followl ing manner, reference being had to the ac-` companying drawing, in which:
Figure l is a face view of my improved lock; Fig. 2 is a view with the front of the casing of the lock removed and showing the shackle in the closed position; Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, with the shackle raised;A Fig. 4 is a sectional view onthe line a-a, Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a sectional `viewon the line 5 2), Fig. 4; Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the bolt;v Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the lever; and Fig. 8 is a perspective `view rof the tumblers.
It will be understoodthat the design of the casingfof the lock may be varied without departing from the essential features of the invention, and that the lock may be provided with any number of tumblers.
'Referring to the drawing, 1 is the casing of the lock made in two parts secured together by rivets, or other fastenings.
2 is the shackle pivoted at 3 to the casing of the lock.
4 is the nose of the shackle having a notch 5 for the portion 6 of the bolt 7. This bolt is clearly shown in Fig. 4. The boltv is slotted at 8 and a pin 9 extends through this bolt and forms one of the rivets. The bolt has longitudinal slots 10 and 11 and adapted to these slots are pins 12 and 13 so that the bolt can move only in a longitudinal direction. Mounted on the pin 9 is a lever 14. This lever has an arm 15, which is of a width and length to close the opening 16 for the nose of the shackle when the shackle is raised, as in Fig. 3. The rear arm 17 of this lever is extended and is bent at its outer end, as at 17, and engages the projecting portion 18 of the bolt 7 when the bolt is withdrawn and the lever is in the position illustrated in Fig. 3, so Vas to prevent the bolt from moving forward, until the arm 15 ofthe lever is depressed by the nose 'of the shackle. The upper portion 19 of the lever 14 extends into a slot 20 of the bolt but, in some instances, where the portion 6 of the boltl 7 is thin, the slot may be dispensed with.V By this construction, I am enabled to make the lock compact and the portion 6 substantial so as to withstand the strains to which it is subjected'. A spring 21 is Patented June s, 1915.-
the `spring bears against the rear of the bolt 7 while the other endl bears against the `under side of the arm 15 of the lever 14,1
tending to raise the arm 15 and to force the bolt forward. When the shackle is in the closed position, Fig. 2, the arm 17 of the lever 14 is raised into engagement with the heel 23 of the shackle, as illustrated in Fig.' v2, so that the shackle is not only locked at the nose, but also at the heel. spring 24 engages a pin 25 on the heel of thesha'ckle and a pin 26 on the body of the lock, and this spring tends to raise the shackle when the bolt is withdrawn.
Mounted on the pin 13 are the tumblers' 27, which maybe made as shown in Fig. 8,V
blers will be brought into register with the fence and the bolt is withdrawn by thekey and the spring 24 will immediately raise the shackle 21, which will actuate the lever 1 4, closing the shackle opening in the casing of the lock so as to prevent dust or dirt from gaining access'into the interior of the lock. On the movement of this lever, it will hold the bolt in a withdrawn position until thevnose of the shackle enters the casing, turning the lever on its pivot after which the bolt will be released and the lever will engage the heel of the shackle simultaneously with the boltengaging the nose.
It will .be noticed upon referring to Fig. 2, that the arm 17 of the lever 14 rests upon the end 18 of the bolt 7 when the bolt is projected, thus holding the lever in the path of the heel of the shackle so that in the event of any parts being broken at the nose A coiled f from being turned by the lever 14 which is arm located in the path of the nose of thev f shackle and of a shape to close the opening for the shackle, when the shackle is raised, to prevent dust entering the interior of the lock, said lever having another arm arranged to engage the bolt when the bolt is withdrawn.
2. The combination in a padlock, of a casing; a shackle pivotally mounted in the casing; a bolt arranged to engage the nose of the shackle; a pivoted lever having` one arm located in the path of the nose of the shackle and arranged to close the opening for the shackle when the shackle is raised and having another arm arranged to engage the bolt when the bolt is withdrawn, said shackle having a heel with which the said lever engages when the nose of the shackle enters the casing and when the bolt is projected.
3;' The combination in a casing, of a pivoted shackle having a notched nose; a sliding bolt arranged to enter the notch in the nose of the shackle; a pivoted lever having one arm located in the path of the nose of the shackle and arranged so as to close the opening in the casing for the nose and having a rearwardly extending arm, the bolt having a projecting portion arranged to be engaged by the lever when the bolt is withdrawn, the shackle having a heel arranged to be engaged by the lever when the shackley is closed; and a spring having one arm engaging the lever and the other arm engaging the bolt.
4. The combination of a casing; a shackle pivotally mounted in the casing and having` a heel; a spring tending to raise the shackle; a sliding bolt having a portion engaging the nose of the shackle and slotted; a pin projecting from the casing and through the slot; a lever mounted on the pin and having a flat arm arranged to be engaged by the nose of the shackle and shaped to close the opening in the casing for the nose when the shackle is raised, the lever having a rearwardly extending arm arranged to'engage the heel of the shackle when the shackle is closed and to engage a projection on the bolt when the shackle is open; and a spring having one arm bearing against the lever and the other arm bearing against the bolt.
5. The combination in a padlock, of a casing; a shackle pivotally mounted in the casing and having a nose arranged to enter the opening in the casing; a sliding bolt arranged to engage the nose; means for engaging the bolt, said bolt having a projecting portion; a pivot pin on the casing; a lever mounted on the pivot pin and having two arms, one arm being fiat and arranged in the path of the nose of the shackle and also arranged to close the opening in the casing for the nose when the shackle is raised, the other arm being bent at the end and arranged to engage the projection on the bolt and also arranged to engage the heel of the shackle when the shackle is in the closed position.
6. rlhe combination in a padlock, of a casing; a shackle pivotally mounted in the casing; a bolt arranged to engage the shackle; a pivoted lever having an arm arranged to be actuated by the nose of the shackle and having another arm arranged to engage the bolt when the bolt is withdrawn and to rest upon the bolt when the bolt is projected and also to engage the heel of the shackle when the bolt is in the projected position.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FRANK SOLEY.
