D METHGD 0F GALVANIZING. a gg Specification oi Lettcrs Patent. Patented June 8, 11915. Original application filed June 28, 1913, Serial No. 776,430. Bividcd and this application filed fictober 20,
To (11210710777. it may concern:
Be it known that l, Nnw'roN W. Boon, a citizen of the United States, residing at New (lastle, in the county of Lawrence and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Method of Galvanizing, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact descrip- 14 for engaging the hooked portions 18 on tion, reference being had to the accompany pipe supporting im-mhers 19. These pipe mg drawings, forming part oi this spccilication, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through one form of apparatus for carrying out my novel method. F '2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is an end view of one of the pipe supportingn'ieinbers on a larger scale, and Fig. lis' a sectional view on the line lV-lV of Fig. 3.
My invention relates to the go lvanizing of pipes, bars, etc, and is designed to provide a method of novel character by means of which the work of galvanizing may be rapidly and tl'loroughly performed.
he precise nature of my invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings,-which will now be described, it being premised, however, that various changes may be made without deof burners or hot plates 92, which are arpartlng from the spirit and scope of my inranged to heat the pipes to drive off some of ventlon, as defined 1n the appended claims. the moisture l'rorn the acid bath. or rods through the mounted This endless conveyor is which may be rotated in any dcsiredniannor, and extending outwardly from both of the chains oi the conveyor are projections treated by means of the acid to remove 70' grease, etc. in order to prepare them for the galvanizing bath. The pipes are conveyed successively from the tank 2 to the skid 9 and pass by gravity down the skid 9 to the stop 12. The pipes are then sively beyond the stop .12 and a supporting member 1 is connected to each end thereof. 1 t is then passed to a point abo e a plurality In the drawings, the numeral 2 designates portingmembers 19 are then elevated at a tank for containing the acid bath 3. their outer ends by means of a lever such as 1 d gnates a skid leading into the bath on Which the pipes to be galvanized are fed in any desired manner. liotatably mounted in the bearings connected to the tank 2 are shafts 55 having connected thereto sprocket Wheels 6 for an endless conveyor 7. This endless conveyor is provided with hooks 8 which are arranged to lift the pipes or rods frbln the skid l and convey them to an inclined, skid 9. This skid 9 extends from the acid tank 2 to a point adjacent to a hot metal tank 10, having a furnace 11 for keeping the metal in a molten condition.
12 is astp on the skid 9 which is ardown the skid to the hot metal tank 10.
Extending beyond the hot metal tank 10 is a third skid 13, over which the pipes are moved. afterthey have been galvanized, and 14 is an endless conveyor above the hot metal tanklO. which is arranged todraw the pipes the pipes or rods rolling shown at 523 so that the hooked members thereof will be engaged by the projections ll on the conveyor 14. The forward move ment of the co'nveyer will carry the pipe into the hot bath in the tank 10 and the guides 21 will hold the pipe down below the upper surface of the molten metal. passage of the pipe through the molten metal, the outer surface thereof will be galvanized and any vapor caused by the 1noisture within the pipe will pass out through the openings in the connecting members.
on I sprocket wheels 15 connected to shafts 1o 55 the upper end thereof into 65 moved succes- 25 During the 9th of my invention will be the pipes one of said closures heretofore been experienced due to the rapid vaporization within the pipe of any inoisture such as remains from the acid bath, as the vapor can pass'ofi through the openings in the supporting members.
A further advantage consists in the fact that the threaded ends of the pipe are protected against being coated and that no galvanizing material can enter the interior of during the galvanizing operation.
\Vhile-I have shown my invention as being carried out in connection with hot galvanizing, it will be readily understood that my improved method is also applicable to electrogalvanizing, the. pipes being supported and moved through the electrolyte'in a manner similar to that of hot galvanizing.
This application is a division of my pending application Serial No. 776,430, filed June 28, 1913.
I claim 1. The herein described method of coating P p the ends of the pipe to be coated, at least having a vent opening, and then moving the pipe through a heated coating bath While maintaining said vent which consists in applying closures to opening above the level of the coating. ma terial in the bath, substantially as described.
2. The herein described method of coating pipes having threaded end portions, whiclt consists in applying removable ve ted closures to the ends of the pipe of a c. aracter to cover the threads thereof, and moving the pipe through a heated coating bathwhile maintaining the vent openings of said closures above the level of the coating material in the bath, substantially as described.
3. The herein described method of coating pipes, which consists in applying closures to the ends of the pipe to be coated, at least one of said closures having a vent opening, and then moving the pipe through a heated coating bath by engagement with said closures while maintaining said vent opening above the level of the coating material in the bath, substantially as described. 1
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
