ILLUMINATED SIGN.

Speccation of Letters Patent.

Patented J une 1, 1915.

Application filed January 22, 1912. Serial No. 672,729.

T0 all whom t may concern Be it known that we, ABNER F. CONNER and GUY L. l/VILLn'rT, citizens of the United States, and residents of Indianapolis, county of Marion, and State of Indiana, have invented a certain useful Illuminated Sign; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. i i

The object of this invention is to provide an improved sign for advertising and other purposes. Y

The feature of the invention lies in provi ding the letters for asign which are somewhat V-shaped in cross section with the apex of the angle projecting through the sign board and in lighting the same from the rear and throwing the light upon the front of the letter whereby vari-color effects may be obtained for the purpose of drawing attention to the advertisement.

rThe nature of the invention will be understood from the accompanying drawings and the following description and claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of one letter of a sign with portions shown by dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the letter and front plate with the opening through the latter shown by dotted lines. Fig. 1 is a perspective of the rear side of the front plate and showing the relation between the letter and said front plate.

In detail there is shown in the drawings a boxlilre structure 10 withV the front face adapted to be closed by a front plate 11 in which there'is an opening 12 approximating the shape of the letter 13, here shown as the letter T, and illuminated by means of lamps 14 secured to the rear'wall of the boX 10 and connected in any desired manner.

The letter 13 for the sign is formed of sheet metal bent to substantially a right angle and with the vertex of the angle projecting through the opening 12 and beyond the faceof the front plate 11, but in such a manner as to leave a slight space between the edges of the opening and the inwardly inclined sides of the letter 13. As shown in Fig. 2, substantially one-half of the letter 13 projects beyond the front plate 11. As shown in Fig. 4, there are a number of light walls or detlecting plates 15 secured to the side of the letter 13 and to the rear side of the front plate 11 and projecting within the boX 10, past the end of the filaments in the lamps 14, thus dividing the interior of the box 10 into a number of different light chambers, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1.

YWithin the light chambers formed within the boX 10 by the plates 15 and to one side of the rear edges of the letter 13, the lamps 14 are secured in such a manner that the light from the same will be thrown upon the front side of the letter as well as being reflected upon the same by the rear face of the front plate 11. By having a number of lights of different colors within each chamber and with a series of connections for each, either a plain color or a varicolored light may be thrown upon the letter 13 and the lighting upon the different sides of the letter may be the same or may be varied. By properly controlling the lights, the shape of the letter may be made to appear to change from convex to concave in shape and by properly arranging the lights a flame light effect may be obtained in which the lights seem to dance upon the letter.

We claim as our invention:

1. A sign including a plate with an opening therethrough, a character V-shape in cross section with the tapering portion projecting through said opening and beyond said plate and partially filling said opening, and lighting means back of said plate and located beside the inclined surfaces of said character in position to throw light directly en the same to be deflected outwardly beyond the plate.

2. A sign including a plate with an opening therethrough, a character V-shape in cross section with the tapering portion projectingthrough said opening and beyond said plate and partially filling said opening, lighting means back of said plate and located beside the inclined surfaces of said character in position to throw light directly on the same to be deflected outwardly bealXed our signatures in the presence of the yond ther plate, and partition plates ar- .witnesses hereinjnained. Y Y v ranged to localize the light from each of Y ABNER F CONNER said lighting means upon the surrounding GUY L WILLETT 7 restricted portions of the character, whereby dierent colored lights may be thrown upon Witnesses :VV v dierent portions of said character'. l' G. 1H. BOINK,V In witness whereof, we` have hereunto v Y E. MAYO. Y
