To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, ROBERT E. KIMBALL,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful improvement in Transfer-Printing Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to transfer printing machines, particularly adapted for use on the sosca-lled pay-as-you-enter or paywithin cars wherein the fare is paid and the transfer issued to a passenger when he boards the car.
lllhe above types of cars and fare collection system while successful in many respects are not entirely satisfactory, due chiefly to the delays incident to the commonly employed system of issuing transfers in which the transferring line and time are punched by hand. This is particularly true during rush hours or when a number of passengers board or wish to board the car at the saine'tiine for the reason that the conductor as atrule is incapable of quickly calculating the time that the car is scheduled to arrive at a certain transfer point, and of adding to that time the proper stopover pe 'iod or the time allowed for the passenger to board the car at the intersecting line or the line to which transfer is to be made. Consequently, either the car is de layed an unnecessary length of time, or, as is frequently the case, the conductor will punch all the transfers for the time that his car is scheduled reach the end of the line, with the result that passengers receiving transfers are allowed much longer stop-over privileges than to which they entitled.
The primary object of my invention is to provide a transfer printing machine by means of which transfers can be issued much more quickly and with less liability of than with the More particu 1 mental eifort on the p it of the conductor ror placing on the transfer the proper time limit designation, and therefore in t to eliminate the chief cause issuing transfer-sat the present t as.-
l lre above objects are attained by any inpntion, which in one aspect comprises a ransfer printing machine having a time printing member and a line selecting mechanism which when actuated by the conductor, controls the time printing member or members so that the latter will be brought to proper position for printing the time or time limit in which the transfer is to be used for the particular line selected, this time limit being preferably a predetermined time period later than the time that the'car is due to arrive at the transfer point.
@ther features of novelty reside in the means whereby the machine can be readily used, both for the out and in -or going and return trips, whereby the machine can be set or adjusted so as to print the proper time limit for any transfer point in case the car is running behind its schedule time. The above and many other features of novelty will be specifically described in the specification and set forth in the appended claims.

The transfers are adapted to be printed on a continuous strip 10., (see Figs. and a} which may be provided in the 11, in
the form of a roll 10 The strip is provided along opposite edges, with notches 10 which are adapted to be engaged by feeding fingers to be explained presently and which divide or mark the strip into sections, each of which may have certain data previously printed thereon, as shown in Fig. 3, and each having spaces adapted to receive certain other data which is printed by the machine. The strip is fed over the face of a platen 12 which is pivotally supported near its rear endupon a shaft 12 extending between the side walls of the casing and is provided with a pair of rearwardly extending arms 12 between which the V gtrip isv fed and by which the platen is piv otally mounted on the shaft, said arms having rearward extensions projecting beyond the shaft and provided with notches or recesses 12.
The platen co'operateswith printing members mainly in the form of type wheels, to be referred to later, which, are inked by an inking roller 13 supported by arms 14 se cured to a shaft 15, extending between the side walls of the casing. Une of the arms lat has an extension 1% which is adaptedto be engaged by a roller-actuating pin 16 carried by one of two membersl? fixed to a shaft 17 extending between the side walls of the casing. A spring 15 which sur rounds the shaft 15 returns the inking roller to normal position,the shaft being turned until a pin carried thereby engages a stop pin 15", (see Fig. 3), These members 17 are provided with upwardly extending lugs ll in which are pivoted strip feeding fingers 13 which are pulled yieldingly toward each other by a spring 19 and are adapted when moving forwardly to engage in two of the oppositely disposed notches in the strip 10 after the printing operation, and thereby feed the strip forwardly an amount equal to the length of one section so that the end section thereof is projected between a pair of knives or cutting blades 20 and 21, and is tl ien severed from the strip. The blade 21 is pivoted at one end so that the strip will be severed first at one edge and then across to the other edge, as in the manner of shears having pivoted blades. This blade 21 is designed to be ing a bell crank 25 which is mounted on a pin 26 projecting laterally from one side of the casing and which is provided with a forwardly projecting arm 25 having a ball and socket connection. with the free end of the blade 21 and having an arm 25 which projects downwardly at substantially right angles to the arm 25 and is connected by a link 27 t0 the lower end 23 of a double arm 28 fixed to the shaft 12", previously referred to. The arm 28 is secured to the shaft near one of the side walls of the casing, and near the opposite wall of the casing, the shaft 12 has fixed thereto an arm 29 which is directly opposite the end 28 of the double. arm 28. Extending between the portion 28 of arm 28 and the arm 29 is a cross bar 28, and projecting outwardly from the portion 28 of arm 28 is a pin 28 which is adapted to be engaged byone of two slotted links 9 30 and 31 to actuate all the mechanism so far described, and other parts to be referred to presently, the pin engaging in the slots of said links and normally at the inner ends or bases of the slots. The slotted link 30, it will be noted, is considerably shorter than the slotted link 31 and the form r is connected at its upper end to a crank arm 30 which is fixed to a main operating shaft A. which extends through one of the side walls of the casing and is provided at its outer end with a main operating lever A, The longer slotted link 31 is connected at its upper end to a crank arm 31 which is fixed to an auxiliary operating shaft B which, as shown, is somewhat above and forward of the shaft A and has one end projecting through the side wall of the casing and provided with an auxiliary operating lever B. The type wheel 33 which prints the difier ent transfer line or lines to which transfers are issued is carried by a hub of a gear wheel 56, which is adapted to be engaged by a gear segment 57, which term the line wheel segment and which is mounted upon a shaft 58 extending between the side walls of the casing This segment has a hub 59 provided with an outwardly projecting arm or crank 60 (see Figs. 3 and 6) provided with a laterally projecting pin 1 which is connected by a spring 62 (see Fig. 3) to the cross bar 28 previously referred to, this spring serving, when the cross bar 28 is turned or shifted, by either the link 30 or the link 31, to turn the segment, and consequently the line printing type wheel 33 a predetermined amount depending upon the name of the particular line to be printed upon the transfer. The pin 61 is also connected to the cross bar 28 by a slotted link 63, the cross bar 28 engaging in the slot of the link. The purpose of this slotted link is to return the segment 57 and the type wheel 33 to their normal positions after the transfer has been printed. The line selecting mechanism which when actuated determines the distance through which the segment 57 is moved will he explained presently.
The type wheel 3'1 which prints the day of the month is normally stationary and will be adjusted in. position each day by the couductor who will turn-the shaft 37 and the hand wheel 38 the proper amounts. Suitable indicating means on the exterior of the casing will be provided to enable the conductor to set the type wheel. As here shown,

the link 31. The segment 69 and the wheels connected thereto are adapted to be returned to normal position in the same manner that the segment 57 is returned to normal position, that is by means of a slotted link 72 which extends from the pin 70 and engages the cross bar 28,the cross bar of course mounted on a situdor shaft 76 projecting inwardly from one of the casing walls. By referring particularly to Figs; 8 and 9, it will be noted that the disk 73 is provided with a notch corres onding to the slot between two gear teeth and that the disk 74 is provided with two teeth which project outwardly to the periphery of the disk 73. Tt will be noted also from these figures and also from Fig. 2, that the gear wheel 75 has a portion provided with eight teeth, this portion projecting over the disk 74: and to one side thereof, and another portion provided with only four teeth,this portion projecting over the disk 73, the alternate teeth ofgear 75 being shortened so as to provide atone part of the gear tour teeth, and at the other part eight teeth. The portion of. the gear having the eight teeth is engaged by a gear 77 mounted on a shaft 78 which extends across the casing, the gear 7 7 being provided with a hub carrying a gear 7 9 which meshes with a gear 80 which moves with the hour type wheel 35. Urdinarily, or when two of the teeth of the gear 75 engage the smooth-or unnotched portion of the gear 7 3, this gear wheel 7 3, and the gears connected thereto are held against rotation. However, once during each revolution of the disk 73, and therefore of the disk 74, the notch 73*- arrives opposite one of the teeth of the gear 75, and at the same time the teeth 74 come into driving engagement with the teeth of? the gear 75, with the result that the gear 75 will be turned by the teeth on the disk 74-- through a space corresponding to two teeth. Conse uently, through the medium oi the gears 7 7, '79 and 80, at each rev-o lution of the minute wheel 36, the hour wheel 35 will be turned a proper amount to at;- vance said hour wheel one hours space, or one twenty i ourth olt' a revolution Tt may he noted at this point that by moving the hand wheel 68 and shaft 67 inwardly the gear 33 is out of engagement with the teeth of the segment 69, and then by turning the hand wheel 68, the minute type wheel 36, and the hour type wheel 35 can be adjusted or turned to any desired. position. This is of importance for the reason that it atoya-s is necessary for the conductor to set the time wheel at the beginning of a trip so that the time wheels will print correctly for the first transfer point, and therefore for all sub-' sequent transfer points providing the car is not delayed at any point along the line, and in case the car is delayed and is running behind its schedule time, the conductor can by means of this adjustment advance the time wheels so as to make the proper correction. In order that the adjustment may be accurately made, T provide means for indicating the positions of the minute and hour type wheel, the indicating means for the minute wheel consisting in this case of numerals 5, 10, 15, etc., arrangedon the hand wheel 68, (said numerals being indicated at 68), and a stationary indicating pointer 68 adjacent said numerals. The means for indicating the position of the hour wheel includes a shaft 82 Which is supported in the side walls of the casing and has at one end which projects beyond the casing wall an indicating wheel 83 which is provided with hour numerals 83 and coiiperates with a stationary indicating pointer 83. This shaft has fixed to it a gear 8% which meshes with the gear 7 9, which in turn meshes with the gear 80 fixed to the hour type wheel 35. The indicating wheels 68 and 83 turn at the same rates as the minute and hour wheels respectively, and therefore if the numerals are arranged properly on said indicating wheels,
the numerals opposite the pointers will be the same as the numerals en the type wheels which are in printing position.
I shall now describe the preferred form of the line selecting mechanism, or the mechanism for causing the line wheel 33 to be brought to the proper position to print the name of the desired line to which a transfer is to be made, and an important feature of my inyention, viz: means whereby the actuation of the line selecting mechanism for any particular line determines the extent of movement of the time wheels so that the proper time is printed on the transfer. ldfhile T have shown only the preferred form of line selecting mechanism, T wish it to be understood that l do not desire to be limited to the same as this particular part of the machine may be varied somewhat without ailecting its function as regards the controlling of the time wheels. The stop member which cotiperates with the notched plate 95 is shown at 99, and this member 99 is provided with a finger 99 which extends outwardly through an elonsecured to the top of the casing and support on the ends opposite to the ends which carry the stop member 99, a notched plate 106 which is located beneath the shoulders on the shanks of the keys 85' of the line selectingmechanism. 'lhisplate is provided at its upper edge beneath said shoulders 85 with notches forming a series of steps 106*, (see particularly Fig. 5), so that when different keys are depressed, the plate 106 will be depressed difierent amounts, and consequently the stop device 99 which moves parallel to the plate 106, will be raised different amounts so that the finger 99 of the stop device will be projected in the path of different shoulders 95 or 95 By referring particularly to Fig. 5, it will be noted that the plate 106 does not, as here shown, extend beneath the shoulders 85 of all the keys, and that when either of the first three keys are depressed, plate 106 will not be shifted, and therefore the stop device will not he shifted. This arrangement is provided for the reason that prefer to employ what is known as an emergency key which may be the first or uppermost lrey and will be utilized for printing an emergency transfer without any line limitation thereon, such for example, as are commonly used when a previously issued transfer becomes worthless, due to anim- -usual delay before the transfer point is reached, and for the further reason that l prefer that the time wheels be set prior to the start of a trip for the time that the car is scheduled to arrive at the first transfer point. Of course, the time wheels could be set for the start of a trip, but in such case, a movement of the time wheel would he necessary to'print the proper time for the first transfer point, and a greater movement would be necessary for each subsequent transfer point.
When either the second or third keys are depressed when the ear is, say, on the Uut trip, so as to print a transfer for the first or intense second intersecting lines which, in this case, would be located so near each other that the same time would be printed on a transfer to either of said lines the line wheel segment would be moved so that the name of the proper transfer line would be printed on the transfer, but the time wheel segment will not be shifted for the reason that the stop plate 106 and the stop device 99 will not be shifted. However, the proper time will be printed on the transfer for either of these two transfer lines for the reason that, as before stated, before the car is started from the end of the line, the conductor will set the time wheels to positions such that without any further movement of the time wheels, the proper time will be printed on the transfer when the car reaches this transfer point. In other words, the time wheels will be set topositions such that when the machine is operated to print the transfer, the time which will be printed on the transfer will be a certain period, say ten minutes, or the proper stop-over period later than the scheduletime at which the car should reach the transfer point. When, however,- either the fourth or fifth key, or in fact any one of the other keys is depressed, the stepped plate 106 will be lowered a predetermined amount so as to raise the stop device 99, and therefore the stop finger 99 an amount sufilcient to bring the stop finger 99 out of engagement with the first shoulder or the shoulder which it normally engages, 'as shown in Fig. 1, into the path of a certain other shoulder. 'llherefore when the machine is operated to print a transfer for say the second transfer point, the hne wheel segment will be moved a certain amount which is determined by the position of the stop wire carried by the particular key depressed, and the time wheel segment will be turned a certain amount which will de pend upon the distance or the second shoulder from the first shoulder, and this distance will be directly proportionate to the schedule time between the first transfei point and the second transfer point. If this time is say twenty minutes, or approximately twenty minutes, the, time which is printed on thetransfer for the second transfer point will he twenty minutes later than the time which is printed on the transfer for the first transfer point.
Since on the flirt or return trip the transfer points are passed in the reverse order to, that when on the Gut? trip, the
notches95 or those which are employed for the'return trip will be the same in number, spacing and length as the notches 95*, ex-
cept that the former are just in the. reverse order to the latter. In atransferprinting machine, movable printing members for printing line and time designations, a line selecting mechanism including a series of keys one for each iii line to which transfer is to be made, a stop mechanism for the time printing member controlled by said line selecting mechanism and including a movable stop device and a member which cooperates therewith, and means for transmitting movement from said line selecting mechanism to said movable stop device comprising a member adapted to be engaged by said keys and to be shifted by said keys different amounts.

In a transfer printing machine, movable line and time printing members for printing line and time designations, a line selecting mechanism comprising a plurality of keys one for each line to which transfer is adapted to be made, a stop mechanism for the time printing member controlled by the line selecting mechanism, said stop mecha- "nism including a movable stop device, and
a member which cooperates therewith, and means for transmitting movement from said line selecting mechanism to said stop device comprising a notched or stepped plate adapted to be engaged by keys of said line selecting mechanism and to be moved different amounts thereby.

In a transfer printing machine, a casing containing rotary line and time printing wheels, gearing for rotating the same, a line selecting mechanism which when actuated interposes a stop in the path of a gear connected to the line printing wheel and limits the movement thereof, a stop mechanism for the time printing wheel controlled by the line selecting mechanism and comprising a movable stop device, and a plate having shoulders which cooperate therewith, said plate being supported on a gear connected with said time printing member. In a transfer printing machine, a casing containing rotary line and time printing wheels, gearing for rotating the same, a line selecting mechanism which when actuated interposes a stop in the path of a gear connected to the line printing wheel and limits the movement thereof, a stop mechanism for the time printing wheel comprising a movable stop device adapted to be actuated by the line selecting mechanism and a plate which cooperates with said stop device, said plate having two series of shoulders, one series cooperating with said stop device on the out trip of the car, "and the other on the, in trip, and said plate being removably supported on a gear connected to the time printing wheel so that it may be readily removed and reversed in position at the end of a trip.

In a transfer printing machine, rotary line and time printing wheels, gears connected thereto and adapted to rotate the same different amounts, a line selecting mechanism including a, plurality of movable members adapted to positively stop at different positions a gear connected to the line printing wheel, a stop mechanism for the time printing wheel adapted to stop the latter at different positions, said stop mechanism being controlled by the line selecting mech 7o anism and comprising a plate provided with a series of shoulders and removably supported on a gear connected to the time printing wheel, and a stop device which cooperates with said shoulders and is shifted different amounts by said line selecting mechanism.

In a transfer printing machine, a movable time printing member, and means for controlling the movement of the time printing member comprising a member having definite stop points thereon and a positive movement limiting device cooperating therewith, the relative spacing of said stop points having a fixed relation to the distances be tween transfer points or stations along the and time printing members independently r and relatively movable during the operation of the machine for printing line and time data for a number of transfer lines, and means comprising a selecting mechanism for controlling the movements of the line and time printing members so as to cause the time Which is printed on a transfer for any particular line to be a predetermined amount later than the time that the car is scheduled to arrive at the transfer point.

In a transfer printing machine, line and time printing members, means for simultaneously and independently shifting both printing members predetermined amounts from normal position so that when a transfer is printed for any particular line, the time that is printed bears a predetermined relation to the time that the car is scheduled to arrive at the transfer point, operable means for limiting the movements of the printing members when the latter are shifted, and means whereby the normal position of the time printing member may be adjusted.

In a transfer printing machine, a movable time printing member, and means for controlling the movement of the time printing member comprising a stop member having definite stop points thereon, the relative spacing of said stop points having a fixed relation to the distances between transfer points or stations along the line on which the machine is employed and a movable stop device cooperating with said stop member and adapted to be controlled by the operator,

In a transfer printing machine, a movable time printing member for printing time data for a number of transfer lines, andmeans for controlling the movement of the time printing member comprising a member having stop shoulders thereon and a movable stop device cooperating with said stop memher and adapted to be controlled by the operator, the relative spacing of said shoulders being proportionate to the relative schedule timeperiods between transfer points.

In a transfer printing machine, a die carrier having substantially uniformly spaced dies adapted to print different station designations; a second die carrier having dies adapted to print different time designations; means for bringing correspending time and station dies to the printing point including stop member operatively connected with the time die carrier to move simultaneously therewith and having stops spaced proportionally to the running time of a vehicle between stations designated by the station dies; and means for taking impressions from the time and station dies simultaneously presented at the printing point.

In a transfer printing machine, a die carrier having substantially uniformly spaced dies adapted to print diflerent station designations; a second die carrier having dies adapted to print different time des- 1gnations; means for bringing corresponding time and station dies to the printing point including a stop member operatively connected with the time die carrier to move simultaneously therewith and having stops spaced proportionally to the running time 'of a vehicle between stations designated by the station dies; means for initially adjusting the relative positions of the time die carrier and the stop member; and means for taking impressions from the time and station dies simultaneously presented at the prmting point.

In a machine for printing transfers, the combination of a die carrier having dies adapted to print time designations; means for positioning different time dies at the printing point including a stop member operatively connected with the die carrier to move simultaneously therewith and having stops spaced proportionally to the running time of a vehicle between stations at which transfers are to be issued, a positive movement limiting device cooperating with said stop member; means for initially adjusting the relative positions of the die carrier and the stop member; and means for taking impressions from the die presented at the printing point.
37. In a machine for printing transfers, the combination of a die carrier having dies adapted to print time designations; means for positioning different time dies at the.
printing point including a stop member operatively connected with the die carrier to move simultaneously therewith and having two series of stops, the stops of each series being spaced proportionally to the running time of a vehicle between stations at which transfers are to be issued, and the stops of one series being arranged in reverse order to those of the other, a positive movement limiting device cooperating with said stop member; and means for taking impressions from the die presented at the printing point.

In a machine for printing transfers, the combination of a die carrier having dies adapted to print time designations; means for positioning difierent time dies at the printing point including a stop member operatively connected with the die carrier to move simultaneously therewith and having two series of stops, the stops of each series being spaced proportionally to the running time of a vehicle between stations at which transfers are to be issued, and the stops of one series being arranged in reverse order to those of the other, a positive movement limiting device cooperating with said stop member; means for initially adjusting the relative positions of the stop member and the die carrier; and means for taking impressions from the die presented at the printing point.
39. In a printing machine a pair of independently movable printing members, a key board selecting mechanism and means by which the actuation of a single key controls the movements of both printing members.
