Description

IINTTED sTATns PATENT u Enron.
CHARLES F. BUERSFELD, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
BIT FOR CARVINGf-IVIACI-IINFS.`
Specification of Letters Patent No. 11,407, dated August 1, 1854. i
To all whomy t may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES F.` BAUnRs- FELD, of Cincinnati, I-Iamilton county, Ohio, have made new 'and useful Improvements in Carving-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification.
My improvements have reference chiefly to the formation of the tools or bits used to shape `out a raised ligure or relievo upon a fiat board.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a frame work furnished with a suitable revolving and sliding mandrel and accessories which may be of the form usual wit-h drilling machines and therefore require no special description. The remaining gures (2 to 1G inclusive) represent different forms of my excavating tool or bit. Figs. 2 and 3 are axial sections and Fig. l is a side view of a bit for forming semispherical projections. Figs. 5 and 6 are two axial sections-at rightangles to each other-of a straight excavating bit. Figs.
7 and S are a side view and axial section of a hollowing bit. Figs. 9 and 10 are axial sections. Fig. 11 is a side view, and Fig. 12 an end view of a facing and excavating bit. Figs. 13 and 14 are a side and sectional view ofa large undercutting bit. Figs.` 15 and 16 are an axial section and side view of a smaller undercutting bit.
All of these bits I form on the following principle: I first turn off a piece of steel in such manner as to give to it a longitudinal contour corresponding to the designed vertical section of the member of the relievo for which it is intended. This being done, a slot or groove (i) is made, which passing longitudinally down one side, crosses the end at or near its center and is directed longitudinally up again on the other side; the groove being in each instance deeper as it approaches the face or lower end of the bit. and gradually shelving out at the upper end. The edges of this groove actas cutters whichever way the tool is turned, the groove conveying off the separated particles as they are formed.
I claim herein as new and desire to secure by Letters Pat-ent:
The formation as described of an excavating bit, having its longitudinal contour corresponding to the designed vertical section of the relievo, and grooved as described along its sides and across its lower end or face, at or near the plane of its axis for the purposes explained.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto set my hand before two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES FRIEDRICH BAUTRSFELD.
l/Vitnesses GEO. H. KNIGHT, WM. DISNEY.
