Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 18, 1915.
Application filed October 17, 1913. Serial-Ho. 795.620. Renewed March 3, 1915. Serial No. 11,875.
To all when: it in (11 concern.
Be it known that I, ALBERT S. Cox, a citizen of the l nited States, residing at (lrantwood, New Jersey. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Military l'niforms or the like, of which the following is a clear. full, and exact description.
My invention relates to apparel and articlcs particularly adapted for military uniforms and equipment such as blankets, arms. tents. etc., and my object is to render the same less easily distinguished by the eye particularly when viewed against a backgroigid of natural foliage and the like.
The drawing, which shows a military blouse and trousers, discloses one embodiment of my invention.
In this preferred embodiment the ortions represented by the cross-hatched lines, such as 1, are of a relatively dark color such as whatis now known as military olive drab. The light or unshaded portions 2 are of a relativelylighter shade such as a li.ht greenish yellow. It will be observed hat the two colors are arranged in what might be termed up and down stripes, although these stripes are very irregular in position and outline. The continuity of the stripes is broken at irregular intervals by transverse portions of the contrasting color, as for example shown at 3. The outlines of the portions are also preferably irregular or wavy in appearance as shown. I also refer to ive a re ircsentation of de th y making the outline between the light and dark portions. or some of them, of a darker color than even the olive drab. and referably black or nearly so. as shown y the heavy black outline at 4. for exam lo. I also prefer to break up any possib e unifornutv by isolated patches of one color irregularly disposed on the contracting color such for example as shown at 5 and 6. some of these may have dark outlines as indicated at (i and 7. and others may be without the dark outlines as for example at 8 and 9. The spots are also of irregular sizes as shown. I also prefer to still further break up the uni ormity by transverse strokes or mtchen of a still different color such as int icatcd at 10. which I prefer to make of li ht gray. The outline or appearonce may it: still further destroyed by adding to the uniform irregular portions such as 11 in the form of leaves.
By actual test I have found that a uni form embodying my invention as above de-.
scribed is almost invisible even a short distance away when against a natural back ground such as grass, foliage or the like.
I am aware that my invention may be embodied in various forms and it is not limited to a military uniform as it may be employed for a hunters clothing. I therefore do not desire to be limited to the above illustrated embodiment of my invention.
What I claim as new is:
1'. A military uniform or the like, having irregularly disposed stripes up and down of dark and relatively li ht colors with irregular wavy outlines, tie continuity of the stripes of one color being broken at irregula 1' intervals by transverse irregular portions of the other color.
2. A military uniform or the like, having irregularly disposed stripes up and down of substantially army olive drab and light greenish yellow colors with irregular wavy outlines. the continuity of the stripes of one color being broken at irregular intervals by transverse irregular portions of the other color.
3. military uniform or the like. havin irregularly disposed stripes up and down 0 dark and relatively light colors with irregular wavy outlines. the continuity of the stripes of one color being broken at irregular intervals by transverse irregular portions of the other color. and isolated patches of one color superposed on the other.
-l. A military uniform or the like. having irregularly disposed stripes up and down of dark and relatively light colors with irregular wavy outlines. the continuity of the stripes of one color being broken at irregular intervals by transverse irregular ortions of the other color. some of the co ors being outlined by still darker colors.
5.1a article of the character described rendered less easily visible by pronounced irregular alternating patches of contrasting light and dark colors with wavy outlines. some of the darker patches being outlined in a still darker color. the color efi'cct of some of said patches being broken up hv smaller spots of contrasting color and all producing the effect of uncertain light and shade.
0. A military article of the character described having interrupted, alternating. irregular, elongatcd areas of contrasting light 10 pro ucing the effect of uncertain light and shade nnd rendering the uniform distinguishable with difiicultiy at certuln ranges substantially as dewribe Signed at New York city, I. Y. the 16th day of October, 1913.
