WILLIAM STESOHULT,
OF GLANDORF, OHIO.
Letters Patent No. 113,943, dated April 18, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAWlNG-'MACHENES- The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and` making parl: o the name.
To all whom tt may concern:
reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked ,thereonmaking a part of this specification'.
The nature of my invention consists in the ,coustruction and arrangement of a motive power, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order toenable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which represents a side view of my machine.
A. represents a beam, oi any suitable dimensions,
the rear end of which rests upon and is secured to another beam, B, placed at right angles with the former. It must not be understood that the beam B is exactly' under the extreme rear end of the beam A. It is a suitable distance in front of the rear end, but so that the rear end of the beam A is raised up from, while the front end rests upon, the ground.
At the front end ot' the beam A is a slotted standard, C, inclined backward, as shown, for adjusting the log-holder D.
rlhis log-holder consists of a straight bar, pivoted at its rearend to the side of the beam A, and, by a bolt and wrenchnut passing through the slotted standard C, it is adjusted at any height desired.
On the under side, at the front end, is a pin, a, for holding the log firmly,
The bar D also serves to hold the saw up when not in use.
Near the front end of the beam A is pivoted a slotted bar, E, which inclines backward and is supported by a spring, b, as shown.
'Ihe upper end of this bar E is pivoted'within the upper forked end of a pendulum, G, the lower end of which is also forked or slotted, and passes over a guide, d, formed on the upper edge of the beam A.
The pendulum G is provided with arms or handles H H extending in opposite directions, and, at about its center, or, rather, above its center, the pendulum is pivoted to an arm, I, extending upward from a rocking bar placed on the beam B, said rocking bar being provided with a foot-board, J.
A lever, E, extendsrforward from. the foot-board J and arm I, as shown.
In the siot at the lower end of the pendulum G is pivoted the sawdiolder L, which passes through the slotted bar E, and to the front end of which the saw v M is attached,
Io operate this power, proceed as follows:
Place the right foot on the board J and the left hand on the lever or arm H; that will throw the saw forward.,
Then throw the weight on the other footand arm, which will work the saw backward.
By taking hold with the right hand on thelever K and the left on the handle H, then pull together and apart, which willgive a double power, the same as if standing upon the board J. The spring b helps to throw the saw back.
The power may, with slight alterations, be used for any purpose desired. I have described it as having a saw attached, but any other machine maybe attached to the pendulum G.
Having thus fully described my invention,
WVhat l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isf- 'Ihe combination of the bed-beam A with guide d, slotted bar E with spring b., pendulum G with haudles H H', arm I, foot-board J, and lever K, and the bar D, and slotted arm O, all arranged substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes herein set forth.-
ln testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 4th day of February, 1871.
WILLIAM STESOHUL'I.
