To prevent evaporation of the ink when. the type is not in contact with the ink roll E an automatic shutter E is provided which is reciprocally mounted upon the top of the cover E and normally closes the aperture E. This shutter E carries stem E extending through the hollow stem E the portion of said stem E projecting through the hollow stem E carrying a notch E which engages with the spring latch E (see Figs. 1 and 5). This latch E is pivoted at E in a slot in the lower end of the hanger E the upper end of which hanger is loosely mounted on the hub E in the upper end of the yoke arm D. The spring E secured to'the lower end of the hanger E acts against the extension E of the spring latch E to hold said latch in position within the notch E.

The operation of the shutter is shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, Figs/2 and 3 showing-the shutter withdrawn while the type is being inked and Fig. 1 showing the shutter closed, entirely covering the ink roll E when the type is not being inked. On one end of the shutter E is a rack E which meshes with a pinion E loosely mounted over one end of the shaft E E is a sprin pawl secured to the pinion E by a screw said pawl adapted to engage with a ratchet wheel E secured to the extreme outer end of the shaft E .When the shutter E is opened the rack E moves the pinion E upon the shaft E causing the pawl E to engage one of the teeth of the ratchet wheel E causing the ink roll E to be turned a portion of a revolution, which moves into position for contacting with the type a portion of the ink roll which had previously been in engagement with the wiper E When the shutter is closed the pinion E is operated in the reverse direction while the pawl E nearly slides over the teeth of the ratchet wheel E.
The operation is as follows: With the parts in a normal or-non-operating position as shown in full lines in Fig. 1, the operator desiring to print or stamp the articles places the same on the work supportin table H, and presses the foot pedal which throws into action with the driving power the clutch which has been fully described in my application hereinbeforereferred to, which action of the clutch operates to move the rock shaft D, moving the yoke arm D and inking mechanism E outward and upward (see Fig. 2) until the stop E has engaged the rib E which stops any further movement of the hanger E causing the shutter E to be withdrawn and exposing the ink roll E which in the meantime has been moved as hereinbefore described, exposing a freshly inked portion of the ink roll E. A further movement of the yoke arm I) causes the roll to contact with one edge of the type on type head J. In the meantime the rock shaft G is operated to move the type head J upward together with the inking mechanism E, continued relative movement of the type head J and the inking mechanism E causing the ink roll E to roll along the face of the type while the rack E continues to operate the pinion E and roll E until the type head J drawsaway from the ink roll E as shown in Fig. 3. The type head J now remains momentarily stationary while the inking mechanism E is operated by the rock shaft D to draw away from the'type head and return to its normal position as shown in Fig. 1. In the meantime after the inking mechanism E has moved out of the way of the type head J the rock shaft G causes the type head J to be moved downward to the dotted line position shown in Fig. 1, marking the article located on the table H, whilethe continued movement of the machine causes the type head J to be moved upward to its normal position as shown in full lines Fig. 1. Upon the return movement of the inking mechanism E as described the stop E engages the rib E stopping the movement of the hanger E thereby closing the shutter E. The machine is now at rest in its normal position ,with the inking mechanism E covered,
which prevents any evaporation of the ink.
I do not limit myself to a step movement of the ink roll E to consecutively expose a freshly inked portion of the same for inking the type, as the roll E may be oscillated sufliciently to freshly ink the portion of the roll which engages the type at each operation.
Having thus described my invention and set forth a construction embodying the same what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. In a device ofthe character described, a type head, an inking roll adapted to en gage and ink the type carried ,on said head, means for inking said type previous to each impression thereof, an operating arm independent of said type head for carrying said inking roll and adapted to operate said roll whereby the same is moved across the type to ink the same and subsequently to withdraw from contact with the type and out of the path thereof on its return movement to permit the impression of said type head, mechanism for operating said type head independently of the mechanism which operatessaid inking roll, operating arm.
2. In .a device of the character described,

In an inking device, the combination with a swinging type head, of an inking roll mounted in a holder, a wiper mounted in said holder and in contact with saidroll and adapted to feed ink to the same, said wiper being fixed at one end to prevent displacement of the same when said roll is operated, means for operating said holder and said roll to ink the type with each impression thereof, and an automatic shutter normally covering said holder and said roll and 1 adapted to be automatically opened prior to each impression to expose sald roll for inking the type.
8.
