LINING FOR FIREPLAGES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 20, 1915.
Application filed. March 15, 1913. Serial No. 754,614.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN R. WIL- LIAMS, a citizen of the United States, resid ing at English, in the county of Jefferson and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Linings for Fireplaces, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an improved lining for fire places or the like.
An object of this invention is the provision of a lining which will protect the side and rear walls of a fire place, and the inner edges of the side walls or j ambs.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a lining such as described consisting of a plurality of plates, and novel means for detachably uniting said plates.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a lining for fire places consisting of a plurality of plates, and means for uniting the said plates, and certain of the said plates having attaching flanges formed thereon by means of which the lining can be readily secured within the fire place.
A further object of this invention is to improve and simplify devices of this character, rendering them comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, reliable and eflicient in use, and of such construction as to be readily applied to or removed from a fire place.
With the above and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formations, combinations and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more particularly described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a horizontal sectional view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail fragmentary horizontal sectional view. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view; Fig. 5 is a fragmentary elevation of the back plate.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by similar characters of reference throughout the several views, 10 designates generally a fire place of the usual construction consisting of the opposite side walls 11, rear wall 12, and front face 13, which terminates at each end in the opposite side jambs 14.
My improved lining 15 consists of a back plate 16 of a length equal to the width of the rear wall 12 of the fire place and of a height less than the height of the fire place. The opposite ends of the plate 16 are adapted to contact with the adjacent portions of the sides 11 of the fire place. The plate 16 is provided at each end with an opening 17 having its inner wall 18 straight and its outer wall 19 inclined. The side plates 20 of the lining are of a length equal to the width of the side walls 11, and of a height equal to the height of the plate 16. The outer ends of the side plates 20 are offset at 23 to produce angular jamb plates or flanges 24 arranged to engage the jambs 14 of the fire place and protect the same. The plates 24 are perforated as at 25 for the reception of bolts or other suitable fastening means by which the same are secured to the jambs 14, which will obviously owing to the arrangement of the tongues 21 and openings 17 hold the side and end plates 20 and 16 against displacement from the fire place. The rear edge of each of the plates 20 has a rearwardly projecting tongue 21, the inner face of which lies flush with the outer face of the plate and these tongues are designed to engage within an opening 17 whereby to hold the three plates positively assembled. The inner end of each tongue is rounded in order that it may he slid freely over the inclined wall 19 of the opening 17 and thus assist in assembling the three plates. In addition the inclined walls 19 of the opening 17 permit the plates 20 to be adjusted to vary the distance between said plates at the back plate 16 and per mits adjustment of the side plates 20 to different angles relative to the back plate.
The flanges 24 can be of any width, so as to protect a suflicient portion of the jambs 14, and are preferably of a height equal to the height of the plates 16 and 20. The lower edges of the flanges 24 are provided with feet 26 which are perforated, as at 27, for the reception of fastening means where by the said flanges can be secured to the floor.
If desired the feet 26 can be omitted in manufacturing the side plates 20, and the plates can be held in position by the fastening means which engage the perforations 25, but preferably when the said flanges 26 are used the perforations 25 are omitted, but it is to be understood that both can be used if desired. It should be understood in this connection that various minor changes in the specific details of construction can be resorted to within the scope of the appended claim, without departing from or sacrificing any of the advantages of the 'invention.
From the foregoing disclosures it will be manifest that a facing for fire places is provided which will fulfil all of the necessary requirements of such a device.
Having thus fully described this invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
A lining for fire places comprising a back plate provided adjacent to each end with an allthrough seat the inner wall of which is straight and the outer wall inclined, and side plates having tongues arranged to engage with the seats, the inclined walls of the seats permitting the side plates to be adjusted to vary the distance between said side plates at the back plate and permitting adjustment of the side plates to different angles relative to the back plate, jamb plates carried by the outer ends of the side plates, and attaching feet carried by the jamb plates.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
BENJAMIN R. WILLIAMS.
