Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMES A. CAMERON and GUs'rAF B. BIRCH, both citizens of the United States, and residents of the borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, clty and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coil- Tightening1 Devices, of which the following is a speci cation.
Coils of material, such as paper, wh1ch have been slitted and rewo'und' often have their convolutions rather loose instead of being coiled tightly, as they should be in order to subsequently utilizethe materlal properly. It is therefore desirable to have means for tightening the convolutions of the coil and the object of this invention is to produce a simple and efiicient device whereby this may be accomplished.
Accordingly the invention consists in rotatable means for engaging the inner convolutions of a coil of material, together with means for supporting said coil edgewise so that different convolutions may be moved independently of others and at different speeds. The result is that the convolutions of the coil are rotated and thereby tightened progressively from the inside out.
The dragging of the coil edgewise on the support may furnish a suflicient means of retardation of the outer convolutions of the coil, but, if desired, this eifect may be increased by applying friction to the said outer convolutions either by the hand of the operator, or otherwise.
In one form of the invention the rotatable means is provided with members which expand by centrifugal force thereby increasing the diameter of the center hole and thus tightening the convolutions of the coil.
In another form of the invention the rotatable member is provided with suitable means for retaining the inner end of the coil of material whereby when the chuck is rotated the entire coil is rewound on the chuck from the inside out, the convolutions being at the same time tightened.
In the accompanying drawings the invention is embodied in several concrete and preferred forms, but changes of construction may be made without departing from the invention expressed in the appended claims. v
In the said drawings: Figure 1 1s a side elevation of the device, partly in section, embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is an end view looking in the direction of the arrow 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 4. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view on the line H of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a top plan view of a modified construction of chuck, and Fig. 6 is a side elevation thereof.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
1 indicates a chuck consisting of a stem 2 carrying a pivot 3 on which are mounted the expanding members 4 by means of suitable links as 5. This chuck is inserted in a suitable rotatable member 6 mounted in a bearing 7 and is provided at one end with a clutch member 8 with which is adapted to engages complementary clutch member 9 whic 1s rotatably mounted in the bearing 10 and is provided with a stem 11 which may be moved longitudinally of its axis to bring the two clutch members together. The longitudinal movement of the stem may be effected by any suitable means, such as by means of the pivoted lever 12 actuated by means of the link or rod 13 by hand, foot or otherwise, and having a bearing portion 14 which engages a collar 15 fast on the stem 11. Interposed between the collar 15 and the bearing 10 is a spring 16 which normally tends to keep the two clutch members disengaged. Suitable means are provided for imparting rotation to the clutch member 9, said means taking in the present instance the form of a belt 17 passing around either one or the other of the idlers 18 or 19, and thence to a groove 20 in the member 9 and back again over the idlers 19 or 18. Motion being applied to the belt 17 it is obvious that the member 9 will rotate. Then by bringing the clutch members 8 and 9' into engagement. this rotating motion is imparted to th chuck 1.
The device as a whole may conveniently be secured to the underside of a table or other support 21, the chuck itself projecting up through said table, as shown. When it is desired to tighten a coil as at 22, said coil is placed edgewise upon the support 21 with the chuck passing through the center hole of the said coil. Then by imparting rotation to the chuck, the members 3 and 1 will expand by centrifugal force and'will cause the convolutions of the coil to be tightened by gradually increasing the diameter of the inner hole of the coil.
In Figs. 5 and 6 is shdwn a modification in which the chuck carries on the end of the stem 2 a suitable head 23 provided with tapering slits or slots 24, as shown, into which the inner end of the coil to be tightened is inserted. The rotation of the chuck then causes a complete rewinding of the coil on itself from the inside out, with the result that the convolutions of the coil are tightened. In the modification shown in Figs. 5 and 6 it will be noted that the outer diameter of the chuck head 23 is preferably uniform throughout its entire length, as shown. In order that the rewinding may take place properly, this rewinding of the coil will be facilitated byapplying friction to the outside of the coil of material by the hands of the operator or otherwise.
What is claimed, is:
1. A coil tighteningdevice comprising; rotatable means for engaging the inner convolutions of a coil of material, and means for supporting said coil edgewise so that different convolutions may be moved independently of others, and at different speeds while the coil is intact.
2. A coil tightening device comprising; rotatable means for rotating the convolutions of a coil progressively from the inside out while the coil is intact, and means for supporting said coil edgewise, whereby the convolutions of the coil are tightened.
3. A coil tightening device comprising; a support adapted to receive a coil of material edgewise, a chuck projecting upwardly from said support and adapted to extend into the center opening of said coil and to engage the same, and means for rotating said chuck, whereby the convolutions of the coil are tightened.
4:. A coil tightening device comprising; a support adapted to receive a coil of material edgewise, a chuck having members projecting upwardly from said support and adapted to extend into the center opening of said coil, means to allow said members to expand by centrifugal force and to grip the coil, and means for rotating said members whereby the convolutions of the coil are tightened.
5. A coil tightening device comprising; a support adapted to receive a coil of material edge-wise, a chuck projecting upwardly from said support and adapted to extend into the center opening of said coil, said chuck having provision to engage With the inner end of the coil of material to tighten the convolutions thereof by causing the said coil to be rewound from the inside out, and means for rotating said chuck.
