Specification of'Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern I Be it known that I, GEORGE MOOK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bardstown, in the county of Nelson and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Gate, of which the following is a specification.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is a gate and one object of the invention is to provide a novel means for operating the gate, said means comprising two pivotally connected elements adapted to be folded with respect to each other to open the gate, means being provided whereby the said elements may be held in alinement, to the end that the same may act as a rigid brace for holding the gate closed.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel form of weight for the lever portion of the gate operating mechanism, the weight acting as a stop to maintain the lever and the link which is connected therewith in alinement.
Another object of the invention isto provide novel means for assembling thelink with the gate.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without de parting from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawing :-Figure 1 shows the invention in perspective; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the mechanism for operating the gate; Fig. 3 is a top plan of the mechanism for operating the gate, a portion of the gate appearing as an added feature.
In the drawings there is shown a fence 1 terminated at a supporting post 2 and at a striking post 3. Hingedly mounted as shown at 4 upon the supporting post 2 is a swinging gate 5 which may be of any desired construction.
Connected with the gate 5 intermediate its ends is a pivot element 6 provided at one end with an enlarged head 7 preferably of circular contour.
The invention comprises a link 8 fashioned from a single strip of metal bent into U-shape, the bend. of the link being indicated by the reference character 9. In the bend 9 of the link there is formed a slot 10 through which the pivot element 6 passes, the head 7 of the pivot element 6 lying within the contour of the bend 9. In advance of the head 7, the side arms of the link 8 are contracted as shown at 11. The side arms of the U-shaped link 8 are contracted at their free ends to form fingers 12 through which a pivot element 14 passes.
A lever 15 is mounted intermediate its ends to swing upon the pivot element 14. Attached to one end of the lever 15 is a weight 16. The weight 16 at one end is adapted to enter between the side arms of the link 8 and in order to facilitate the entry of this end of the weight between the side arms of the link, the side faces of the weight 16 adjacent one end converge to a point as shown at 17 Inserted through the weight 16 is a cross pin 18. The cross pin 18 is adapted to engage the upper edges of the side arms of the link 8 when the lower end of the weight 16 enters between the side arms of the link, to the end that the link and the lever 15 may stand in approximate alinement and serve as a rigid brace adapted to hold the gate 5 in a closed position. The rear end of the lever 15 is mounted on a shaft 19 supported upon short posts 20 inserted into the ground. '1.
livotally connected at 22 with the lever 15 intermediate the shaft 19 and the pivot element 14 is a U-shaped yoke 21 with the upper end of which are connected flexible elements 23 leading to the adjacent ends of primary levers 24 fulcrumed intermediate their ends as shown at 25 upon posts 26. The U-shaped yoke 21 is adapted to receive one end of the weight 16 when the lever 15 is raised. Mounted on the posts 26 are brackets 27. Supported in the brackets 27 and in the posts 26 are pivot elements 28 constituting fulcrums for secondary levers 29 united with the primary levers 24 by means of links 30. Flexible elements 31 de pend from the free ends of the secondary levers 29. If desired, the secondary levers 29 may be dispensed with, the primary levers 24 being of a suflicient length to permit a satisfactory operation of the gate.
Owing to the fact that the link 8 is contracted as shown at 11 in front of the head 7 of the pivot element 6, and owing to the fact that the pivot element 6 passes through the slot 10 in the bend 9 of the link 8, an effective and satisfactory pivotal connection between the gate andthe link 8 is established and at the same time, the link 8 cannot be thrust toward the gate 5 sufliciently to effect a bending of the pivot element 6. The pivot element 6 passes loosely through the slot 10, sufficient play being aflorded so that the link may move not only horizontally but vertically as well.
Owing to the pointed construction of the weight 16 as indicated at 17, the lower end of the weight will.v be guided between the side arms of the link 8 when the gate is closed. The cross pin 18 coacts with the upper edges of the side arms of the link 8 to hold the link and the lever ,15 in alinement and thus as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the gate is held braced in a closed position. The link and the'lever constitute not only a means for opening and closing the gate, but, as well form in 'eflect, a latch mechanism for holding the gate closed.

The general operation of structures of this type is well understood by those skilled in the art, but it may be stated that when one flexible element 31 is pulled upon, one lever 29 and ultimately the corresponding lever 21 is tilted, the flexible element 23 raising the yoke 21, the latter swinging upon its pivotal connection 22 with the lever 15 and raising the lever, the lever swinging on the shafty19. The lower end of the weight 16 is withdrawn from between the arms of the link 8 and the inner ends of the link and the lever move upwardly, thus effecting an opening of the gate, the lever 15 swinging.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. In a device of the class described, a swinging gate; a link pivoted to the gate and comprising spaced parts defining an opening; a lever pivoted intermediate its ends between the parts of the link; a transverse weight on one end of the lever and provided with a tapered end adapted to enter the opening thereby to guide the lever between the parts of the link, the weight comprising a lateral projection cooperating with the link to hold the link and the lever in approximate alinement whereby the link and the lever will act as a brace to hold the gate closed; means for pivotally mounting the other end of the lever; and means for raising the lever.
2. In a device of the class described, a swinging gate; a U-shaped link; a pivot element connecting the bend of the link with the gate; a pivot element connecting the ends of the arms of the link; a lever mounted to swing intermediate its ends upon the last named pivot element; a transverse weight on one end of the lever and including a guiding end adapted to enter the link; aprojeotion on the weight and adapted to engage the upper edges of the arms of the link thereby to hold the lever and link in approximate alinement, whereby the lever will act as a brace to hold the gate closed; means for pivotally supporting the other end of the lever; a U-shaped yoke pivoted to the lever and adapted to receive the other end of the weight when the lever is raised.
