This invention relatesto improvements in train stoppingapparatus and-has particular application to automatic mechanism for cutting .oif.-'the-'r propelling power of a motor car-and applying the brakes.

It is also my purpose to provide apparatus of the type set forth which will operate efficiently and effectively under all conditions,

. With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth in and falling within the scope of the claims.

Referring nowto the drawings in detail,
. 1 designates a-trackway which is preferably divided into blocks of. suitable lengths and arranged betweenthe lines of rails of each block is a conductor 2 parallel with theadjacent line of rails and alining axially with the conductors in the adjoining blocks. Each conductor 2 is supported upon posts 3 appropriately fastened to the upper surfaces of the ties of the trackway, and is disposed in a plane above the tread surfaces of the track rails, the conductors 2 beinggrounded through the posts 3. At switches, grade crossings and similar places the particular conductor 2 is carried under the rails of the Fig. 1.

Mounted upon the fulcrum post 5- 0f the throttle lever and concentrically thereof is a disk 8 having the periphery thereof formed with teeth 9, while formed integral with the periphery of the disk and projecting radially thereof is an arm 10 lying. in faceto fact contact with the quadrant plate and capable of movement over such plate. 'This arm 10 is normally disposed at the forward edge of the quadrant plate, that is, the edge of the plate remote from the boiler and the outer end edge of such arm is beveled as at 105 the latching dog of the throttle rod and projecting onto the face'of the quadrant plate 7 in the path of movement of thebeveled edge 11 and lug 12 on the arm 10 is a lug 13 adapted to be engaged by the beveled edge 11 of the arm 10 inthe' initial movement of the latter over the adjacent faceof the quadrant plate to disengage the dog from the adjacent tooth and, in the continned movement of the arm 0, to be engaged by the lug 12, to swing the throttle valve lever 1 to valve closing position whereby the flow of steam from the steam dome of the boiler to the engine cylinders will be cut off. In the present instance, an electric motor 1 1 is disposed above the quadrant plate 7' and suitably fastened to the boiler and the armature shaft of such motor is disposed in a vertical plane and has the lower end thereof equipped with a pinion 15 meshing with the teeth 9 on the diskS whereby, in the operation of the motor, motion will be transmitted to the disk 8 to swing the arm 10 over the adjacent face of the quadrant plate to unlatch the throttle lever and move the latter'to valve closing position. The pinion 15 is splined upon the lower end of the armature shaft of the motor 11 for vertical sliding movement thereon and is provided with an upwardly projecting hub sleeve 16 surrounding the shaft and fixed;
thereto bymeans of a set screw or the like is a disk 17, while interposed between the' confronting faces of the disk 17 and the pinion 15 is the interconnecting member of a' yoke 18. The upwardly projecting limbs of the yoke 18 are disposed within the forked end 19 of a lever 20 fulcrumed upon a post 21 disposedadjacent to the inner edge of the segment. A coiled expansion spring 22 isinterposed between the lower side of the lever 20 and a suitable support and acts upon such lever to force the forked end thereof downwardly and so hold the pinion 15 in mesh with the teeth 9 on the disk 8. A portion of the lever 20 between the pi 0t 21 and the forked end thereof lies adjacent to the uppersurface of the quadrant plate 7 and parallel therewith and is disposed in the path of a wedge-shaped block 23 con nected with the upper face of the arm 10 at the forward edge thereof, such block having the rear end thereof equipped with an upwardly projecting stop 2-1. By means of this construction, it will be seen that when the motor 1 1 is energized and the arm 10 swung o\ er the quadrant plate to unlatch and swing the throttle valve lever, the wedge block 13 will ride under the forked end of the lever 10 thereby swinging the latter about the pivot 31 against the action of the spring llto elevate the pinion-1.5. thus disconnecting the motor from the disk and rendering the arm inactivesucceeding the closing of the throttle valve. the stop 2t abutting the adjacent edge of the lever 30 ,marginal edge thereof.

Should a train run into a block against a set danger signal, the trolley wheel +7 engaging the particular conductors 2 and the particular wheel and axle connected with the car carried partial circuit 42 will place the car carried partial circuit in communication with the source of energy thereby forming a complete circuit and energizing the motors 14 and 21 whereby the throttle valve and engineers brake valve will be actuated as previously described to bring the'train to a standstill. While I have herein shown and described one preferred form of my invention by we of illustration, I wish it to be understoo that I do not limit or confine myself to the precise'details of construction herein de- 00 scribed and delineated, as modification and variation may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
