Application filed May 8, 1914.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, OSCAR HORNBY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hoquiam, in the county of Chehalis and State of Washington, have invented a new and Improved Shingle-Press, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact descrip tion.
My invention has for its object to provide means for automatically pressing shingles in their bundles to tighten the shingles in the bands which hold the shingles together.
It is the custom to handle the bundles of shingles from the dry kiln cars by gravity rollers. M press is disposed between two gravity rol er sections and the said sections are connected with the press for operating the press automatically as the bundles of shingles ass from one of the roller sections to the ot ier.
Additional objects of the invention will appear in the following specification in which the preferred form ofmy invention is disclosed.
In the drawings similar reference characters refer to similar parts in all the views in which Figure 1 is an end View of Fig. 3; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the invention, Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the invention and Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the valve used to control the ports leading to and from the cylinder.
By referring to the drawings it will be i seen that a lever 5 is fulcrumed at to the standard 11 and that the arm 12 of the lever 5 is bent upwardly at its terminal 13 and then disposed under the outer end 14 of the roller section 15, this roller section 15 being hinged at 16 to the roller section 17 disposed at the press which will shortly be described. The other arm 18 of the lever 5 has its terminal 19 bent upwardly, this terminal 19 of the lever 5 being disposed under the end 20 of the roller section 21 which is disposed adjacent the end 22 of the rollersection 17. This construction is provided so that the bundles of shingles passing down the roller section 21 may operate the lever 5 to open the press and free therefrom the bundle of shingles disposed in the press so that the said bundle of shingles, which has been disposed in the press, may be moved therefrom by the new bundle of shingles which enters the press, the bundle of shi11- Specification of Letters Patent.

gles leaving the press, moving on the roller section 15 to again operate the lever 5 to actuate the press for pressing the second bundle of shingles which has been disposed at the press in the manner stated.
The roller section 21 is constructed of parallel supports 23 which are held spaced apart by transverse pieces 24, the rollers 25 being journaled in bearings in the flanges 26 which extend up from the supports 23. The roller section 15 is constructed in a similar manner. The roller section 17 has supports 27 which rest on the frame members 28, the frame members 28 being spaced apart by blocks 29 and 30. Extending up from the supports 27 there are flanges 31 which cor respond with the flanges 26 and in which there. are journaled rollers 32. The frame members 28 form guideways for the plungers 33 which are disposed at the outer sides of the supports 27. These plungers are provided for moving against the ends of the shingles in the bundles to press the shingles together. As the shingles are wedge shaped this pressin of the shingles together in the bundles, wifi tighten the shingles under the bands. The ends 34 of the plungers have diverging guides 35 which are provided for engaging the sides of the shingles when they move in the direction of the supports 27 from the roller section 21, these guides 35 serving to direct the bundles of shingles to a position between the plungers 33, where they may be acted on by the plungers to the best advantage. Disposed at the rear of the plungers 33 there are thrust blocks 36 which are bolted to the frame members 28. Disposed below the horizontal plane of the frame members 28 there is a thrust rod 37 which is held in position by rollers 38 which are journaled in bearings in the arms 39 which are secured to and extend downward from the frame members 28. Articulated to the thrust rod 37 at 40 and 41 there are arms 42 and 43, these arms 42 and 43 eX- tending upwardly. To the upper terminal of the arm 42 there is articulated at 44 a link 4-5, this link 45 being disposed in a slot 46 in one of the plungers 33 and being articulated to the plunger 33 by the bolt 47. This arm 42 is connected with one of the thrust members 36 by a link 48 which is disposed in a slot 49 in one of the thrust members 36 and is articulated to the said thrust member by the belt or pin 50. nected with the other plunger 33 by a link 51, this link 51 being disposed in a slot 52 in the last mentioned plunger, and being articulated to the last mentioned plunger by a bolt or pin 53. The link 51 is articulated to the arm 43 at 54 at a distance from the upper terminal 55 of the said arm 43. The arm 43 is connected with the other thrust member 36 by a link 56 which is articulated to the arm 43 above the link 51, this link 56 being disposed in a slot 57 in the thrust member 36, the link 56 being articulated to the said thrust member 36 by a pin or bolt 58. With this construction it will be understood that the longitudinal movement in one direction of the thrust rod 37 will serve to move the plungers in the direction of each other, while the movement of the thrust rod 36 in the opposite direction, will serve to move the plungers 33 away from each other. Extending downward from the thrust rod 37 there is an arm 59, this arm 59 having an orifice through which is disposed a threaded end 60 of a piston rod 61. The arm 59 is held in position relatively to the piston rod 61 by the bolts 62 which mesh with the threads at the end 60 of the piston rod 61, and press against each side of the arm 59. The piston rod 61 is disposed through an opening 63 in the head 64 of the cylinder 65, this piston rod 61 being secured to the piston 66 disposed in the cylinder 65. Entrance of steam or other fluid under pressure to the cylinder is controlled by the valve 67 having an inlet 68 and a port 69 which is connected with the end 70 of the cylinder 65 by means of the pipe or conduit 71, the other end 72 of the cylinder 65 being connected with the port 73 of the valve 67 by the pipe or conduit 74. Disposed in the valve 67 there is a piston or plunger 75 which has a flange 76 which cuts oli communication between the inlet 68 and the outlet or exhaust 77. There is a channel 78 around the valve 75 affording communication between the inlet 68 and the port 69 when the piston 75 is in its uppermost position shown in Fig. 4. However, when the piston 75 is moved down the flange 79 on the piston or plunger 75 is disposed between the port 68, and 69 for cutting off communication between the inlet port 68 and the port 69 which leads to the end 70 of the cylinder 65. However, when the piston or plunger 75 is disposed in its lowermost position, communication is afi'orded between the port 69 and the outlet or exhaust 77 by means of the ports 80 which lead to the interior 81 01. the piston or plunger 75, and in this way to the outlet or exhaust 77 The valve 67 has a head 82 through an opening 83 in which the valve stem 84 is disposed, this valve stem 84 being articulated to the lever 5 at 85.
The frame members 28 are supported by the legs 86 which are secured to the base members 87, angle irons 88 being secured to the said base members 87 to which are secured the supports 89 for the cylinder 65. To the terminal 19 of the lever 5 there is secured an angle member 90 for engaging a depending angle member 91 secured to the end 20 of the roller section 21. In a similar manner a depending angle member 92 is secured to the end 14 of the roller section 15 for engaging the terminal 13 of the lever Vhen using the invention a bundle of shingles is disposed between the plungers 33 and the plungers 33 are moved to press the shingles together to tighten the shingles in the band, disposed around the bundle of shingles. hen another bundle of shingles is disposed on the rollers 25 of the roller section 21, and the last mentioned bundle rolls down the said rollers, it will cause the roller section 21 to move down to the dotted lines shown at 93 of Fig. 3 01 the drawings, and this movement of the roller section 21 will operate the lever 5 to move down the arm 18 of the lever, this downward movement of the arm 18 serving to press down the piston or plunger 79 of the valve 67, the downward movement of the piston or plunger 75 serving to cut oil communication between the inlet 68 and the port 69, while opening communication between the port 69 and the outlet or exhaust 77 through the ports 80 of the interior 81 of the piston or plunger 75. This will permit the steam or other fluid in the cylinder 65, between the piston 66 and the end 7 0 of the cylinder, to flow through the pipe or conduit 71 to the port 69, and by the means described, to the outlet or exhaust 77. This will permit the piston 66 to move in the direction of the end 7 O of the cylinder, and as the steam or other fluid under pressure, fiows around the piston or plunger 7 5 to the port 73, and then through the port 74 to the end 72 of the cylinder 65, the piston 66 will be moved in the direction of the end 70 of the cylinder to move the thrust rod 37 to the position shown by the solid lines in Fig.
1 of the drawings, this movement being brought about by the instrumentality of the piston rod 61 and the arm 59. This movement will serve to open the press by moving the plungers 33 from each other and the bundle of shingles which is moved down the roller section 21, will strike the bundle of shingles which has been disposed between the plungers 33 to force the last mentioned bundle of shingles to the roller section 15, the second bundle of shingles remaining between the plungers 33, as the first bundle of shingles strikes the roller section 15 and rolls downward the rollers of the said roller section which will serve to move downward the arm 12 of the lever 5, this movement of the lever 5 carrying upward the arm 18 to move upward the piston or plunger 75 of the valve 67, this upward movement of the piston or plunger 75 afiording communication between the inlet port 68 and the port 69 leading to the end 70 of the cylinder 65 to move the piston 66 to the left, the steam or gas passing from the end 7 2 of the cylinder 65 through the pipe or conduit 74L to the port 73 and thence to the outlet or exhaust 77 in the valve 67. The press will again be opened in the manner described when another bundle of shingles passes down, the rollers of the roller section 21.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a machine of the class described, a press, a conduit leading to the press, a conduit leading from the press and means operable by the conduits for operating the press.
2. In a machine of the class described, a press, a conduit adjacent the press, and means operable by the conduit for actuating the press.
3. In a machine of the class described, a press, a conduit leading to the press and adapted to move vertically relatively to the press, a second conduit leading from the press and adapted to move vertically relatively to the press, and means for actuating the press operable by the movement of the conduits.
4. In a machine of the class described, a press, a lever, a conduit leading to the press and engaging one arm of the lever, a conduit leading from the press and engaging the other arm of the lever, and means for actuating the press operable by the lever.
5. In a machine of the class described, a press, a conduit hinged at one end, adjacent the press, a second conduit having an end adjacent the press and movable relatively thereto, a lever having an arm under the other end of the first conduit, and the said end of the second mentioned conduit, and means for actuating the press operable by the lever.
6. In a machine of the class described, a press, a cylinder, a piston in the cylinder, means by which the piston is adapted for operating the press, a pipe leading to the cylinder, a valve in the pipe, a conduit having an end disposed adjacent the press, and means operable by the conduit for moving the valve.
7. In a machine of the class described, a press, a cylinder, a piston in the cylinder, means by which the piston is adapted for operating the press, a pipe leading to the cylinder, a valve in the pipe, a conduit leading to the press, a second conduit leading from the press, a lever having an arm under the first conduit and another arm under the second conduit, and means operable by the lever for moving the valve.
8. In a machine of the class described, two companion press plungers spaced apart,
links articulated to the plungers, two thrust members, a link articulated to each of the thrust members, two arms, one of the first and one of the second links being articulated to each of the arms, one of the first links being articulated to one of the arms adjacent an end thereof and one of the second links being articulated to the other arms adjacent an end thereof, a thrust rod to which the other ends of the arms are articulated and means for operating the thrust rod.
9. In a machine of the class described, two companion press plungers spaced apart, links articulated to the plungers, two thrus rods, links articulated to each of the thrust rods, two arms, one of the first and one of the second links being articulated to each of the arms, one of the first links being articulated to one of the arms adjacent an end thereof, and one of the second links being articulated to the other arm adjacent an end thereof, a thrust rod to which the other ends of the arms are articulated, a conduit leading to the press, a conduit lead ing from the press, and means operable by the conduits for actuating the thrust rod.
10. In a machine of the class described, two companion press plungers spaced apart, links articulated to the plungers, two thrust rods, and links articulated to each of the thrust rods, two arms, one of the first and one of the second links being articulated to g each of the arms, one of the first links be ing articulated to one of the arms adjacent an end thereof, and one of the second links being articulated to the 0th r arm adjacent an end thereof, a thrust rod to which the other ends of the arms are articulated, a lever, a conduit leading to the press plungers and engaging one arm of the lever, a conduit leading from the press plungers and engaging the other arm of the lever, and means for actuating the thrust rod operable by the lever.
11. In a machine of the class described, a press, operating means for the press, a con duit adjacent the press having means for operating the first mentioned means for opening the press, and a second conduit adjacent the press having means for operating the first mentioned means for closing the press.
12. In a machine of the class described, a
press, means for operating the press, and
means in the path of a member moving in the direction of the press, for actuating the first mentioned means.
13. In a machine of the class described, a press, means for operating the press, and means for engagement by a member moving along a path leading from the press, for actuating the first mentioned means.
14. In a machine of the class described, a press, a lever, means for operating the press adapted to be moved by the lever, and means for engagement by a member moving along a path leading to the press, for operating the lever.
15. In a machine of the class described, a press, a cylinder, a piston in the cylinder, means by Which the piston is adapted for operating the press, a pipe leading to the cylinder, a valve in the pipe, and means for engagement by a member moving along a path leading to the press, for operating the valve.

In a machine of the class described, two companion press plungers spaced apart, links articulated to the plungers, two thrust members, a link articulated to each of the thrust members, two arms, one of the first and one of the second links being articulated to each of the arms, one of the first links being articulated to one of the arms adjacent an end thereof, and one of the second links being articulated to the other arm adjacent an end thereof, a thrust arm to which the other ends of the arms are articulated, and means for engagement by a member moving along a path leading to the press, for operating the thrust rod.
17. In a machine of the class described, a press, means for operating the press, and a lever for actuating the means, and having an arm adjacent the path leading to the press, and its other arm adjacent the path leading from the press.
